How to Stream a Podcast Archive to YouTube Live with Windows Task Scheduler

Use Windows Task Scheduler to launch an encoder for a scheduled YouTube Live broadcast, with practical checks for stream keys, task accounts, audio-only archives and YouTube archiving.

You can use Windows Task Scheduler to launch an encoder at a chosen time, then send a podcast recording to a scheduled YouTube Live broadcast. The key pieces are a YouTube event and its stream key, an encoder that can turn the archive into live audio and video, and a scheduled Windows task that starts the encoder with the right account and file access. For a scheduled YouTube broadcast, be ready to check its preview and click Go live; scheduling the Windows task alone does not complete that step.

What you need before scheduling

  • A Windows PC that will be powered on and available when the task runs, with access to the podcast archive and encoder.
  • Live streaming enabled for your YouTube channel. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the broadcast time.
  • A scheduled YouTube broadcast and its server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  • An encoder that can read your archive and send both audio and video to YouTube. A podcast file is often audio-only; a video live stream needs a visual signal as well. Choose and validate a visual treatment—such as a static image or waveform—with your encoder and YouTube before relying on it.
  • A launch command or script that starts the encoder with the archive and YouTube ingest details. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the stream URL and key setup, but the sources here do not establish a tested command line or playlist method for this particular workflow.

YouTube supports software and hardware encoders. A hardware encoder is optional; this Windows Task Scheduler workflow does not require buying one. If comparing encoder options, check that the encoder supports your archive format, can produce the required audio/video output, accepts YouTube ingestion settings, and can be launched in the way you intend to monitor it. No particular encoder brand or performance advantage is established here.

Set up the YouTube Live broadcast

  1. In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming if your channel has not used it before. Allow for YouTube’s stated possible wait of up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
  2. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a broadcast. Choose the event’s privacy and other settings to suit your audience.
  3. In the encoder setup for that broadcast, copy the YouTube server URL and stream key into the encoder. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel.
  4. Leave the broadcast ready for the encoder connection. YouTube’s instructions for scheduled streams include checking the preview and clicking Go live to start the public broadcast.

See YouTube’s encoder live-stream setup instructions for the current Live Control Room flow.

Prepare the archive and encoder launch

Confirm the input and output

Check that your encoder can open the archive’s file type and can send a video signal as well as the podcast audio. If the recording has only audio, decide what visual accompanies it and test that combination in the encoder. Do not assume an audio-only file will by itself satisfy a video live stream.

Build the launch action

Configure the encoder to use the archive, the YouTube server URL and stream key, and your selected audio/video output. The precise command-line flags depend on the encoder and its version; no specific FFmpeg command or tested archive-looping recipe is established for this workflow. Validate the chosen configuration with a short test before scheduling a real event. If the task must launch multiple programs, Microsoft documents scheduling a batch file as the single program the task runs.

Do not count on the archive repeating unless your encoder configuration explicitly supports that behavior and you have verified it. A single recording may finish before the scheduled broadcast window does.

Create the Windows Task Scheduler task

  1. Open Task Scheduler and create a task with a time-based trigger for the broadcast preparation time. Windows Task Scheduler also supports startup and logon triggers, but a clock-time trigger is the direct choice when the encoder should start at a particular time.
  2. Set the action to start the encoder or, if multiple programs must be launched, the batch file that starts them. Use the correct executable and argument values for your encoder; Microsoft’s schtasks create documentation specifies that a task runs one program.
  3. Choose the account under which the task will run. Make sure that account can read the archive, access the encoder and any required configuration, and write any logs or temporary files the encoder needs.
  4. Decide whether the task needs an interactive logged-in desktop. Microsoft documents the interactive-only configuration as requiring the configured user to be logged on. Whether an encoder needs an interactive desktop depends on that encoder; it has not been established for every encoder.
  5. Save the task, then run it manually before relying on the schedule. Confirm the encoder starts, opens the correct archive, sends output, and produces a preview in YouTube Live Control Room. This is a prudent preflight check, not a guarantee of unattended success.

For details on task creation and account/logon options, consult Microsoft’s schtasks create reference and Task Scheduler documentation.

Run the broadcast and plan its archive

At the scheduled time, check that the task launched the encoder and that Live Control Room shows the expected preview. For a scheduled broadcast, follow YouTube’s preview step and click Go live. Do not assume that a scheduled Windows task automatically performs this YouTube control-room action.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If having an automatic archive matters, keep the stream under 12 hours; the same archive guarantee is not established for longer streams. See the YouTube encoder guidance.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • Live streaming is not available yet: first-time channel enablement may take up to 24 hours. Enable it well before the planned broadcast.
  • The encoder does not connect: check that the server URL and stream key were copied from the correct scheduled broadcast and entered in the encoder. Keep the key private.
  • The task runs but the encoder cannot find the file: check the archive path and access rights for the task’s run account. A task running under a different account may not have the same file access as your desktop session.
  • The task starts but no preview appears: check the encoder’s output and its audio/video inputs. An audio-only archive needs a video visual signal for this video-stream workflow.
  • The task works only when you are logged in: review the task’s account and logon configuration. Interactive-only operation requires the configured user to be logged on; an encoder may also depend on an interactive desktop.
  • The recording ends before the broadcast window: verify whether the encoder has a supported and tested repeat/playlist function. Looping behavior is not guaranteed by Task Scheduler itself.
  • The stream is live but no archive is available: check the duration. YouTube’s stated automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours.

Sources and technical limits

YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover stream URL/key setup, scheduled-stream preview and the under-12-hour archive statement. Microsoft’s schtasks create documentation covers task actions and batch files. Google’s LiveStreams API reference describes ingestion information and encoder configuration such as resolution and frame rate, but does not provide a complete bitrate, codec or keyframe recipe for this setup. Those settings must be chosen for the encoder and current YouTube requirements, then validated with a test; no specific values are asserted here.
