To stream a podcast recording with a still image, create a YouTube Live event, send it an OBS scene containing an image and the episode’s audio file, and check YouTube’s preview and stream health before going live. You can leave the audio source on loop for continuous replay or turn looping off for a one-time broadcast.

Before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified and has not had live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains eligibility and activation.
  • The podcast audio file and a still image you have permission to use. OBS supports common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV.
  • OBS installed on a computer, an internet connection with enough upload capacity, and a local recording destination if you want a backup.

Clear rights for the full recording and all material it contains—including music, clips, guest contributions and artwork—before you rebroadcast it. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it or terminate it. An archived stream may also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its Terms of Service.

Create the YouTube Live event

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one for later.
  2. Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into a secure place. In OBS, you will enter these in the streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: it gives an encoder access to send a feed to your event. Do not share it publicly.
  3. Keep the Live Control Room open so you can monitor the encoder preview and stream health after OBS connects. YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions cover event setup and encoder connection.

Build the still-image and podcast scene in OBS

  1. In OBS, create a scene for the broadcast. Under Sources, add an Image source and choose the still image file. Resize or position it to cover the intended canvas. If you add text or branding, place those sources above the image in the source order.
  2. Add a Media Source and select the podcast audio file. For a single play-through, leave Loop disabled. If you want the episode to replay continuously, enable Loop; OBS will play the file again when it reaches the end.
  3. Check the audio meter while the file plays. Confirm the image fills the scene, the audio is audible and no unwanted desktop or microphone audio is being sent. Do a short test before the scheduled broadcast. OBS documents image and media sources in its Quick Start Guide.

The still image is the visual; the Media Source supplies the podcast sound. If you want an image to remain onscreen after a one-time episode finishes, leave the image source in the scene and avoid ending the broadcast until you choose to do so.

Connect OBS, check the preview, and go live

  1. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and enter the server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room if the selected connection method asks for them.
  2. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for YouTube’s Live Control Room to show the incoming feed. Confirm the still image appears and the podcast audio is present; check the audio meter and listen to the preview if available.
  3. Only after the preview is correct, click Go Live in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Keep the control room open during the broadcast to watch stream health and confirm that viewers can see the event.

Use a stable upload connection and leave capacity in reserve. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; the figure is from its Streaming tips page, which does not state a publication year. If the network is busy or the available upload speed fluctuates, reduce competing network activity rather than assuming the speed test’s peak will remain available throughout the stream.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Monitor the broadcast and protect the archive

  • Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and check that both sound and picture remain present.
  • Check that any local recording is actually being written and that the destination has sufficient free space. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup.
  • When finished, stop the event in YouTube and stop the encoder feed in OBS. Verify the resulting archive rather than assuming it was saved.

YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. The 12-hour guidance is on YouTube’s Archive live streams page, which does not state a publication year; it is not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy.

Troubleshooting

YouTube does not show an incoming preview

  • Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that activation has completed; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • Confirm OBS is using the correct event’s server URL and stream key. If you regenerate or change the key in YouTube, update OBS to match.
  • Check the internet connection and OBS connection status, then reconnect and wait for the preview to appear before selecting Go Live.

The image appears, but there is no podcast audio

  • Confirm the Media Source points to the intended file and that the format is supported. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV among common supported audio files.
  • Play the file in OBS and watch the audio meter. Check that the source is not muted and that the scene is sending the intended audio.
  • Listen to the YouTube preview before going live. A meter moving in OBS does not by itself confirm that the audience-facing feed sounds right.

The episode stops before the broadcast should end

For a replaying broadcast, enable Loop on the Media Source. With Loop disabled, the file plays once and then ends; the still image may remain, but the episode will not restart automatically.

The live stream is interrupted or the archive gets a claim

Review the audio and image rights, including music, clips and guest material. YouTube may interrupt a live stream when its systems detect third-party content, and a Content ID claim can appear on the archive after the event. Contact the relevant rights holder about allowlisting where appropriate; holding a license alone may not prevent interruption.

The stream ends but no YouTube archive appears

Check the stream duration and the event’s archive status. YouTube warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. For important episodes, record locally as well and confirm the file is growing during the broadcast.
