How to Stream a Playlist to YouTube Live from an Azure Virtual Machine

A practical guide to preparing an Azure VM, sending a playlist to YouTube Live over RTMPS, and checking the network and encoder settings that can stop a stream.

To stream a playlist from an Azure virtual machine (VM) to YouTube Live, run an encoder on the VM, make the playlist files available to it, and send the encoded feed to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Before starting, confirm that the VM has outbound internet access: Azure networking defaults can leave some newly created subnets without it.

What the setup does

YouTube receives an encoded live video feed, not a playlist file. The encoder on your VM reads the videos in order and sends their audio and video to YouTube over an ingest protocol. The playlist and its files must remain accessible to the encoder for the whole broadcast.

This guide describes the setup and includes an illustrative FFmpeg command pattern. It is not a tested end-to-end Azure configuration or a verified FFmpeg playlist command; the exact command and Azure networking choices depend on your media, VM, and network policy.

Before you start

  • An Azure VM with an operating system and encoder appropriate for your workflow.
  • The video files and a playlist definition accessible to the VM, either on its disk or through a mounted storage location.
  • A YouTube channel that can create a live stream, plus access to YouTube Live Control Room.
  • Outbound connectivity from the VM to YouTube’s ingest service. Check the subnet, network security groups (NSGs), firewalls, and any routing rules.
  • A plan for keeping the encoder and playlist process running, monitoring them, and restarting them if they stop. The basic ingest and networking requirements do not by themselves provide a recovery or monitoring design.

Prepare the playlist on the VM

  1. Put the media somewhere the encoder can read. Copy the files to VM storage or mount a suitable storage location. Confirm that the files remain available and that the VM has enough local capacity and network access for your chosen arrangement.
  2. Set and check the order. Create the playlist using the format supported by your chosen playback or encoding method. Check that paths resolve from the encoder’s working directory, and verify the intended order, durations, transitions, and behavior when the final item ends.
  3. Check compatibility between files. Playlist behavior and seamless transitions can depend on differences in codecs, frame rates, resolution, audio layout, and timestamps. If you need consistent output, configure the encoder to produce a common output format and test the sequence before a public broadcast.
  4. Decide what should happen at the end. If the broadcast should repeat, configure the playlist process to loop. If it should stop, do not assume YouTube will end the broadcast automatically just because the media list has ended.

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer is one possible implementation for compatible files: a text playlist can list media paths in sequence, and an FFmpeg process can read that list. The source material reviewed for this guide does not establish a particular playlist format or a verified command, so treat any implementation as something to validate with your own files and FFmpeg build.

Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to broadcast.
  2. Copy the current ingest server or URL and the corresponding stream key shown for that stream. Use the exact values YouTube provides; do not substitute a URL or path from an old example.
  3. Keep the key private. Avoid putting it in public scripts, source control, screenshots, shared logs, or command histories accessible to other users. Use a protected secret or environment variable where practical, and rotate the key in YouTube if it is exposed.
  4. Keep the stream private or unlisted while testing. Use the incoming preview to check video and audio before making it public.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. For an RTMPS connection, the scheme must be rtmps, the server must be a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint, the path must be a valid YouTube Live application name, and the connection uses port 443. RTMPS carries RTMP over SSL. YouTube also documents HLS for some encoder scenarios; use the current YouTube instructions and your encoder’s supported protocols when selecting an ingest method.

Confirm Azure outbound connectivity

A VM can be running normally and still be unable to reach YouTube if its subnet has no configured egress. Microsoft documents that for API versions released after March 31, 2026, subnets in new Azure virtual networks default to defaultOutboundAccess=false. Existing virtual networks are not automatically changed by that rollout. Verify the actual deployed subnet and API version rather than assuming that a VM has internet access.

Microsoft’s documented explicit outbound options include a NAT Gateway, a load balancer with outbound rules, a VM public IP, or a firewall/network virtual appliance route. Choose according to your network’s security policy and operational needs; these options are not interchangeable in every environment.

  • Check the VM’s effective routes and subnet settings.
  • Check NSG and firewall rules for outbound access to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint, including RTMPS on port 443.
  • Check any proxy or network virtual appliance path that may block or inspect the connection.
  • Test from the VM before launching the broadcast. A successful connection to some other website does not prove that the configured ingest endpoint and port are reachable.

Configure and start the encoder

Choose output settings

Follow YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the resolution and bitrate that fit the source material and the VM’s encoding capacity and outbound bandwidth. The YouTube guidance reviewed for this article lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for conventional SDR video, and AAC or MP3 for audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Settings guidance can change, so check YouTube’s current table before choosing a bitrate.

Do not assume that a VM size can encode a particular resolution or frame rate at a particular bitrate. No VM sizing or encoding benchmark is established here. If the VM cannot encode smoothly or its egress is insufficient, the stream may stutter, drop frames, or disconnect.

Illustrative FFmpeg command pattern

The following is a template, not a tested command. It assumes an FFmpeg build with the required protocols and codecs, compatible input files, a playlist file named playlist.txt in FFmpeg concat-demuxer format, and shell variables containing the ingest URL, stream key, and bitrate chosen from YouTube’s current guidance. Adapt it to your files and verify it privately before relying on it.

  -c:a aac -b:a "$AUDIO_BITRATE" -ar 44100
  -f flv "${INGEST_URL}/${STREAM_KEY}"

This pattern re-encodes video with x264 and audio with AAC; it is not appropriate as-is if those encoders are unavailable or the source needs different handling. Set the keyframe interval in frames to correspond to two seconds at the output frame rate, while keeping it within YouTube’s four-second maximum. Choose the video and audio rates, buffer, output frame rate, and any scaling or format conversion to match YouTube’s current settings and your source. The destination syntax must match the exact ingest details supplied by YouTube and accepted by your FFmpeg build. Do not print the expanded command or stream key into a shared log.

  1. Start the encoder while the stream is private or unlisted.
  2. Open the live preview in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that the picture, playlist order, and audio are correct.
  3. Check encoder output for connection errors, dropped frames, or repeated restarts. Confirm that the VM’s network path remains available.
  4. Only after the preview is correct, make the stream public if that is your intent.

Copyright, permissions, and YouTube policy

Having a copy of a video does not necessarily grant the right to broadcast it. Before streaming, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for every video, soundtrack, and other included material, including material used in transitions or opening and closing cards. YouTube may apply its copyright systems or other live-streaming rules; check YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content. A technically successful feed is not a determination that the content is authorized or eligible to remain live.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check Practical fix
Encoder cannot connect to the ingest server Confirm the current RTMPS URL and path from Live Control Room, the stream key, outbound access, and whether port 443 is allowed by routes, NSGs, or firewalls. Correct the endpoint or key and configure an explicit Azure egress method if the subnet has no outbound access. Retest from the VM.
YouTube receives no usable video Check encoder logs, output protocol and codecs, bitrate, and the Live Control Room preview. Use a protocol and settings supported by YouTube and your encoder. Test with a short private stream and adjust against YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
Video or audio stutters Check VM CPU or GPU capacity, encoder errors, egress capacity, source-file read performance, and whether the playlist contains inconsistent media. Reduce output demands or use a VM and network path suited to the chosen settings; normalize or re-encode mismatched sources as needed.
Playlist stops after one pass or a file is skipped Check whether looping was configured, paths are valid from the VM, and the playlist syntax and file compatibility match the chosen implementation. Correct the playlist and loop configuration, then verify a full pass before relying on the stream.
Preview works but the public stream is interrupted later Check whether the encoder process, VM, media storage, or network path stopped, and whether YouTube reports an ingest interruption. Design process supervision and alerting appropriate to the broadcast. A basic encoder command alone does not implement a complete restart or recovery system.
Stream key may have been exposed Review scripts, logs, shell history, screenshots, and access permissions. Restrict access and replace or reset the key through YouTube’s live-stream controls before continuing.
