To stream videos from a server folder to YouTube Live in alphabetical order, create a playlist whose files are explicitly sorted the way you want, play that playlist in an encoder such as OBS, and send the encoder output to YouTube using a supported ingestion protocol. OBS’s VLC Video source can play a supplied playlist in order when shuffle is off, but it does not automatically sort or watch a folder for new files.
How the folder-to-live workflow works
The reliable chain is folder → ordered playlist → player/encoder → YouTube ingestion endpoint. Treat sorting as its own setup step: neither YouTube nor the OBS documentation defines how filenames in a folder should be sorted, and OBS’s VLC Video source does not establish automatic folder discovery or live directory watching.
First decide what “alphabetical” means for your filenames. A simple lexicographic sort can put clip10.mp4 before clip2.mp4; a natural, case-insensitive sort usually puts clip2.mp4 first. Choose the intended rule and generate the playlist in that order. If the folder changes, check whether your playlist-generation method needs to be run again; automatic updates are implementation-dependent.
Set up an ordered playlist in OBS
1. Check the media and VLC requirements
OBS’s Media Source documentation lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. For broader media support, OBS’s VLC Video source uses VLC libraries and requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

2. Add files in the order you want
In OBS, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the files in the order produced by your chosen sorting rule. Do not assume that selecting a folder will recursively enumerate and alphabetize its contents. Verify the playlist itself before going live.
3. Set loop and shuffle behavior
For a repeating sequence, enable Loop Playlist and disable Shuffle Playlist. OBS documents loop as on and shuffle as off by default, but confirm the source settings rather than relying on defaults. The source follows the playlist order when shuffle is disabled.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or configure the live stream in YouTube Studio. Obtain the current ingestion endpoint and stream key for the event. You can also automate stream and broadcast setup through the YouTube LiveStreams API.
- Choose an ingestion protocol supported by your encoder. RTMPS is the conventional choice for a software-encoder workflow that needs low latency. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP sent through SSL; use the correct RTMPS endpoint on port 443. Follow the RTMPS ingestion guide and the protocol comparison for the relevant setup.
- Enter the endpoint and key in OBS. Use YouTube Studio’s current stream details and the corresponding protocol endpoint. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not expose it in a public script, log, screenshot or shared configuration.
- Start the encoder and confirm the event receives video. Check the preview and stream status in YouTube Studio before making the event public.
RTMPS, HLS and DASH: which should you use?
| Option | Transport and latency | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS | Continuous RTMP over SSL; YouTube identifies it as a good choice for ordinary content that needs low latency. | Use when your encoder supports it and you want the conventional software-encoder workflow. Configure the correct endpoint and port 443. |
| HLS | Segment-based and higher latency than a continuous RTMP-style stream. | Use only with an HLS-capable encoder configured to YouTube’s requirements. YouTube states: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.” |
| DASH | YouTube supports DASH with its own manifest and segment delivery requirements. | Do not assume a general-purpose media player or encoder supports YouTube DASH ingestion; verify support in the chosen encoder. |
HLS-specific requirements
These constraints apply to HLS, not to generic RTMPS settings. YouTube requires 1–4 second segments in TS format, HTTPS POST/PUT requests, no byte ranges, and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Consult YouTube’s HLS setup guidance and the HLS ingestion guide.
Validate playback before relying on the server
Test the whole sequence privately or with an unlisted event before depending on it for a continuous channel. These checks are a practical validation plan; exact results depend on your operating system, encoder, media files and playlist method.

- Confirm the first several filenames play in the intended order, including cases such as
clip2andclip10. - Check audio and video at transitions, and verify what happens at the end of the list and when looping begins again.
- Test the behavior when a file is added, removed or renamed. A static playlist may not refresh itself.
- Test what happens after the encoder process stops or the network connection drops. Unattended startup and recovery depend on how the server and encoder are configured.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health indicators before switching the event to public.
Common problems and fixes
The files play in an unexpected order
The playlist may not match the intended sort rule, or shuffle may be enabled. Rebuild or reorder the playlist using the chosen lexical or natural sorting behavior, then confirm Shuffle Playlist is off.
The VLC Video source is unavailable or media will not load
Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. If using OBS Media Source instead, check that the file type is among the supported formats listed in the OBS documentation.

YouTube does not receive the encoder feed
Recheck the endpoint, protocol and stream key against the current event details in YouTube Studio. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS endpoint and port 443. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
The stream stops or does not resume unattended
A playlist source alone does not establish automatic process restart, network reconnect or server boot behavior. Configure and test those functions in your chosen server and encoder environment; do not assume they are handled just because playlist looping is enabled.

New files do not appear in playback
OBS’s cited media-source documentation does not establish a live folder watcher. Regenerate or update the playlist using your chosen method, then test the new order before relying on it.
Copyright and YouTube channel considerations
Having files stored on your server does not by itself establish that you have the rights to stream them. Confirm that you hold the necessary rights or permissions for the video, music and other included material, and review YouTube’s current policies before broadcasting. A playlist or encoder setting cannot resolve a rights issue.
Cost and operational trade-offs
If you already have a server and source files, this is primarily a playlist, software and configuration task; the workflow does not establish that dedicated server hardware, a NAS, capture card or hardware encoder is required. The trade-off is operational responsibility: you must maintain the playlist and test the encoder, server startup and recovery behavior for your particular setup. Exact CPU/GPU needs, gapless transitions and unattended reliability depend on the implementation and are not established universally.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain the server-side playback and encoder, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
