You can run that setup on an attended computer or use a cloud service that loops uploaded video. Before going live, confirm the channel is eligible, clear rights for the entire recording, test the stream end to end, and decide how you will handle interruptions and recordings. “Continuously” can mean a scheduled loop for a set period or an always-on channel; do not assume YouTube will create one complete archive of a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
Choose the kind of continuous run you need
A gala replay can be sent as a scheduled YouTube Live event, with its media source repeating for the duration you choose. That is different from keeping a channel live around the clock: a long-running broadcast needs a plan for monitoring, recovery, rights, and preserving a copy of the program. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not promise one complete archive for a longer run.
- Scheduled replay: Choose a start and end time, test the loop, and have an operator available while it runs.
- Always-on replay channel: Keep the source and stream running continuously, with a person or service responsible for detecting and responding to failures. Plan separate recordings or other archive handling for runs over 12 hours, and verify the current behavior in YouTube Studio.
YouTube documents how an encoder sends a stream to the platform, but not a particular replay-loop setting. The repeat function depends on the encoder or playback service you choose; confirm it can repeat unattended before relying on it.
Clear the gala recording before you stream it
Having a recording of a performance does not by itself establish permission to retransmit it on YouTube. The organizer is responsible for having the necessary rights for the live content. Check the recording as a whole, not just the main program, because a gala may contain performances, walk-on or background music, sponsor clips, and other third-party material.

Confirm rights for the complete program
- Ask the organizer to confirm that permissions cover retransmission on YouTube, the intended territories, and the planned live period.
- Check rights for the audiovisual recording, performers, venue, sponsor or other third-party clips, and all music, including music embedded in the recording.
- Where a license applies, confirm that it covers both the live retransmission and any resulting archive. A license for one use does not necessarily cover the other.
Coordinate with rights holders where necessary
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match may cause the live stream to be replaced with a placeholder or interrupted or terminated. Even if the charity has a license, the rights holder may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid an interruption. A Content ID claim can also apply to the archived stream after it ends. Treat rights clearance as a go/no-go check, and coordinate allowlisting with the relevant rights holder before the event if needed. This is practical guidance, not legal advice or a conclusion about any particular gala contract.
Check channel eligibility and schedule the event
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to activate, and the stated minimum age for livestreaming is 16. Check eligibility well before the planned start rather than discovering a restriction during setup.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a live stream and schedule it if you want a public event page and a defined start time. YouTube says scheduling can help promote the event.
- Choose the encoder connection. In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. The key is sensitive: treat it like a password, share it only with trusted operators, and do not expose it in a public document or screenshot.
- Set event options in Studio. Choose the visibility and latency settings that suit the event and review the remaining stream settings before saving. The exact controls can vary as YouTube updates Studio.
- Keep the event page and encoder feed distinct in your checks. The scheduled event is the YouTube destination; the encoder sends the video to it using the URL and key. Confirm that the encoder is connected to the intended event before starting the replay.
Configure the replay and stream settings
Make the media source repeat
Use a software encoder on a computer or a standalone hardware encoder with a playback source capable of repeating the gala file. Check the selected product’s documentation for its repeat or loop control; the YouTube setup guidance does not specify a universal control or guarantee that every encoder can loop unattended. If the gala consists of several approved segments, prepare the order and transitions in the playback system and test the complete sequence.
Decide what should happen at the end of the file: restart immediately, pause, or end the broadcast. For a continuous channel, confirm that the replay actually starts again without operator intervention. Keep a local copy of the source file and know how to restart playback if it stops.

Use a supported ingest protocol and stable output
- RTMPS: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Use it when supported by the encoder.
- Bitrate mode: Use constant bitrate (CBR), consistent with YouTube’s general encoder guidance. YouTube’s published guidance does not establish one bitrate for every resolution and frame rate, so select a value using YouTube’s current settings guidance and the encoder’s supported output rather than guessing.
- Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the source and to a setting supported by the encoder and YouTube. YouTube transcodes streams into supported viewer formats, so viewers may receive different playback formats.
- HLS: YouTube supports HLS where the encoder and workflow support it, but HLS has higher latency because it uses segmented video and has additional playlist and segment requirements. Use it only when those requirements fit your setup.
Test the full path before the gala replay
Test the media loop, encoder, YouTube event, and viewer experience together—not just whether the file plays locally. YouTube advises configuring the encoder at least two hours before the stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event.
- Check the source file. Play the full recording, verify its audio and picture, and confirm the loop behavior at the end. Make sure the chosen playback source can run for the entire planned period.
- Connect early and check the preview. Start the encoder feed ahead of the scheduled start, then check the Live Control Room preview for the correct image and sound. Resolve any warnings before making the event public.
- Check the viewer experience. Open the public watch page and test playback on a phone as well as the operator’s computer. Confirm that sound is audible, the picture is stable, and the scheduled event points to the intended replay.
- Check network headroom. YouTube recommends upload capacity that covers the primary and backup stream bitrates with 20% additional headroom. This is a recommendation, not an uptime guarantee. Use a reliable connection and account for other devices or services sharing it.
- Test recovery if you have a backup ingest. A backup encoder helps only if the team knows how it works. YouTube’s guidance recommends testing failover by stopping the primary ingest; confirm the backup takes over as expected before relying on it.
- Assign an operator. Have someone watch stream health and the actual player, with a clear way to contact the person who can restart the encoder or playback source.
Operate the stream and preserve the recording
During the broadcast, monitor both the Live Control Room and the viewer-facing player. A connected encoder does not by itself prove that the replay is playing correctly or that viewers can hear it. Keep the source file, stream-key access, restart instructions, and contact details available to the responsible operator.

When the planned run is over, stop the encoder after ending the event in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer run, do not rely on one complete YouTube archive: record the program separately or make another archive plan, then verify that the resulting files cover the period you need.

These are categories, not endorsements of a specific encoder. YouTube lists software, hardware, and cloud processing options, but the fact that a product can send a live feed does not establish that it can loop a gala recording unattended.
