To stream a looping 4K 60fps playlist, use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source, select an NVIDIA NVENC encoder your GPU supports, and send the feed to a YouTube Live event over RTMPS. For YouTube’s recommended 4K60 ingest bitrate, set 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1 or H.265/HEVC; use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. These are YouTube ingest settings—not a promise that your files, computer, GPU, or connection can sustain 4K60.
Before you start: verify YouTube access and your hardware
Enable live streaming and create an event
Your YouTube channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it before the day you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup instructions.
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS when prompted. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your event. YouTube explains the key and stream settings in Manage live stream settings.
Check the complete 4K60 workload
NVENC moves video encoding onto supported NVIDIA hardware, but it does not eliminate the work of decoding source files, composing scenes, scaling, and encoding. OBS’s hardware encoding documentation describes compatible hardware and platforms; compatibility is not a performance guarantee for a particular computer. Confirm that your GPU, drivers, OBS version, source codecs, and system can handle the entire workload before relying on it for a long event.

Your upload connection must sustain the selected video bitrate plus audio and normal network variation. YouTube recommends checking connection speed, but does not prescribe one universal headroom multiplier in the cited guidance. If you cannot maintain the chosen bitrate, lower the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate rather than assuming NVENC can compensate for a weak upload connection.
Build a looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. In OBS, a 64-bit installation requires 64-bit VLC. If VLC Video is missing from the source list, check that VLC is installed and that the two applications have matching bitness.
- Create a scene for the stream. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video.
- Add the local video files in the order you want them to play. Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a predictable sequence.
- Enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the final item. OBS documents the VLC Video source’s playlist and loop options in its Media Sources guide; the standard Media Source is for individual-file playback rather than this multi-file playlist workflow.
- Review every file for picture dimensions, orientation, frame rate, audio level, and playback. Test the actual files and system: supported containers such as MP4, TS, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM do not by themselves guarantee that every codec will play correctly in your setup, nor that transitions or looping will be gapless.
Only include material you own or have permission to broadcast. A license to watch or download a video does not necessarily include permission to retransmit it. YouTube’s acceptance of a stream does not establish that its content is eligible for monetization or compliant with every policy; check the current rules for your channel and material.

Set OBS video and NVENC output for YouTube 4K60
Choose resolution, frame rate, and codec
In OBS, open Settings > Video and set the output resolution to 3840 × 2160 and Common FPS Values to 60, if your system can sustain them. In Settings > Output, select the NVIDIA NVENC streaming encoder and choose a codec supported by your hardware and the available OBS configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, but the options exposed in OBS depend on GPU, software version, and configuration.
YouTube’s published 4K/2160p 60 fps ingest guidance specifies these minimum and recommended video bitrates. The figures are platform specifications, not measured quality results or a guarantee that a source file will look good:

| Ingest codec | YouTube minimum | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265/HEVC | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
Use the bitrate for the codec you actually selected. These are video ingest bitrates; allow for audio and network variation when assessing whether your upload connection can sustain the stream. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Use the live-stream requirements, not recording presets
In the streaming encoder settings, set Rate Control to CBR and Keyframe Interval to 2 seconds; YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. Choose RTMPS when available. For a standard SDR stream, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit color.

Do not assume recording-oriented NVENC controls are needed for a live stream. OBS’s page on Advanced NVENC Options (31.0) describes version-specific controls, some dependent on codec or GPU generation. The basic YouTube CBR path does not require copying a recording preset or enabling unrelated options.
Connect OBS to YouTube and test before going live
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account if that option is available. Otherwise, select the option to use a stream key, then enter the YouTube stream URL and key for your event.
- Confirm the event’s privacy and scheduling settings in YouTube Studio. Start OBS output and check that the Live Control Room receives the feed and displays its preview.
- Run an unlisted or private test when appropriate. Start the playlist at the beginning and check moving video, audio, file order, transitions, and the playlist’s return to the beginning. Test with sound and movement similar to what you intend to stream.
- Check the Live Control Room’s stream health and verify the event on its watch page, including on a mobile device. YouTube advises testing before a stream and continuously monitoring audio and video quality; see its encoder guidance and live-streaming tips.
- When finished, stop the encoder and confirm YouTube reports the event has stopped.
What to expect from 4K60 latency and HDR
Some delay is normal for live video. YouTube says its low-latency improvement option is unavailable at 4K resolution, so do not expect a 4K60 stream to behave like a low-latency chat broadcast. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance describes workflows for certain codecs and HDR, but HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it sends video in segments.

This walkthrough uses SDR. HDR requires a separate configuration: YouTube’s HDR streaming instructions call for HEVC, and its OBS HDR flow specifies a hardware HEVC encoder with the Main 10 profile. Do not apply the SDR color settings above to an HDR workflow without configuring and testing HDR explicitly.
Troubleshoot common 4K60 playlist problems
- VLC Video is not available: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), then reopen OBS.
- A playlist item is black, silent, or fails to play: Test that file locally and check its codec, orientation, audio track, and compatibility with the installed playback components. Do not assume a familiar container extension means its internal codec is supported.
- Files play in an unexpected order or do not repeat: Review the playlist order, turn off Shuffle Playlist if sequence matters, and enable Loop Playlist if it should restart after the final file.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm the event is ready in Live Control Room, the stream URL and key belong to that event, and OBS is using the configured service or custom stream settings. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Dropped frames or unstable stream health: Check sustained upload capacity and use the codec-appropriate bitrate. Lower bitrate, output resolution, or frame rate if the connection cannot maintain the feed.
- Encoder overload, stutter, or delayed playback: Check CPU/GPU load and simplify scenes or scaling; then reduce output resolution or frame rate if necessary. NVENC compatibility alone does not establish that the whole system can decode, compose, and encode every source at 4K60.
- Audio or transitions fail during a long run: Test the actual playlist from its start through its end and across the loop before a public broadcast. VLC playlist playback does not guarantee seamless transitions for every file and system.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prepared playlist to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option for uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
Quick Recap
- Nothing has to stay on at home: playback runs in the cloud, not on your OBS computer or home connection.
- Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required (one free day per account). The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
