To stream a prerecorded loop from Ubuntu Server at 4K/60 fps, use FFmpeg to send the file to the RTMPS ingest destination and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Pace file playback in real time with FFmpeg’s -re input option, and configure the encoder for 3840×2160 at 60 fps only if the source and server can sustain it. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendation for 2160p60 is 35 Mbps, constant bitrate (CBR), with a two-second keyframe interval.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu Server with the video file stored locally and enough capacity to read it continuously.
- FFmpeg with an encoder that is available in your installed build and can sustain the output you choose. A 4K60 software encode can be demanding; hardware encoding is an option only if the server and FFmpeg build support it.
- A stable internet connection capable of sustaining the outgoing bitrate, with additional headroom for normal network variation. YouTube recommends testing the connection but does not specify a universal headroom multiplier.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming available, plus the current RTMPS ingest destination and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
Keep the stream key private: it authorizes publishing to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in the channel’s live-stream settings.
Check the source file first
Inspect the file with ffprobe or another media inspector before choosing output settings. Confirm its dimensions, frame rate, video and audio streams, and codecs. A lower-resolution file enlarged to 3840×2160 is not native 4K detail, and a source below 60 fps cannot supply genuine 60-fps motion merely because the output is set to 60 fps.
For a native 4K60 output, both the source and the encoder must be able to provide that format. If the source differs, decide whether to preserve its characteristics or transcode it; test the result rather than assuming an upscale or frame-rate conversion will improve it.

Set YouTube’s ingest parameters
YouTube Help lists 2160p at 60 fps and recommends these H.264 settings for that target. The figures below reflect the YouTube Help page accessed October 3, 2026; check the current guidance before a later broadcast.
| Setting | Value for H.264 2160p60 |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 3840×2160 at up to 60 fps, provided the source and encoder support it |
| Video bitrate | 35 Mbps recommended by YouTube for H.264 |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR) |
| Keyframe interval | Two seconds recommended; do not exceed four seconds |
| Delivery protocol | RTMPS recommended by YouTube |
| Latency | Normal latency; YouTube’s low-latency option is unavailable for 4K |
YouTube also lists a 10–40 Mbps range for AV1/H.265, but the 35 Mbps figure above is specifically its H.264 recommendation, not a universal bitrate for every codec. For protocol, YouTube states: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP video protocol.” Use the current destination and key supplied in Live Control Room rather than assuming an ingest URL.

Prepare FFmpeg and pace file playback
FFmpeg documents -re as reading an input at its native frame rate; it is equivalent to -readrate 1. Real-time pacing is useful when sending a file to a live destination because packet timing matters. Put input options such as -re before the corresponding -i option in the command.
Before building a broadcast command, check which encoders your installed FFmpeg provides and select one your server can sustain at the target resolution and frame rate. The available encoders and their performance depend on the specific FFmpeg build and hardware; no single Ubuntu package or server configuration is guaranteed to handle 4K60.

The exact indefinite-loop option should be verified against the FFmpeg version installed on your server. Confirm its syntax in that version’s documentation or help output before using it for a continuous broadcast. Do not assume a loop flag, encoding preset, or reconnect option is portable across builds without checking.
Connect the encoder to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the current RTMPS ingest destination and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key as a password; avoid putting it in publicly readable scripts, logs, or shell history.
- Configure FFmpeg to read the local file in real time with
-rebefore its input, then set the output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR behavior, and keyframe interval to match your source and YouTube’s current guidance. - Send the encoded output to YouTube using the RTMPS destination and stream key from Live Control Room. The exact full command depends on the input codecs, selected encoder, installed FFmpeg build, and current ingest details, so validate those values on the actual server rather than copying an unverified generic command.
- Start the stream and check Live Control Room’s ingest information and stream-health messages before treating it as ready for viewers.
Test the broadcast before relying on it
Run a representative test before the intended broadcast. Include movement and audio, then check that the incoming resolution and frame rate are what you expect and that the picture, sound, and stream health remain acceptable. A static test image alone may not reveal encoding or network problems with documentary footage containing motion, edits, or sustained audio.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Confirm the server keeps up with encoding over time rather than only during a short launch.
- Check that the outgoing connection sustains the configured bitrate without recurring health warnings.
- Verify audio is present and synchronized, and inspect the stream from a viewer’s perspective.
- Review YouTube’s copyright and reused-content policies for the material you plan to broadcast. A successful technical ingest does not establish that you have rights to the footage or that the channel meets YouTube’s monetization rules.
Plan for unattended operation
A working FFmpeg process is not by itself a complete 24/7 service. For unattended use, separately design and validate process supervision, restart behavior, logging, and recovery after network interruptions. The correct service configuration and reconnect behavior depend on your Ubuntu release, FFmpeg build, and network environment; test failure and recovery cases before relying on a long-running broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep an Ubuntu server and its network connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required. The same product is on every plan; only the term changes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does 4K60 streaming require YouTube’s low-latency mode?
No. YouTube’s 4K streams use normal latency; the low-latency option is unavailable for 4K.
Will an upscaled 1080p documentary become native 4K?
No. Upscaling can change output dimensions, but it does not create captured 4K detail.
