Yes—a Raspberry Pi can run an encoder that sends a continuous audio-and-visual feed to YouTube Live. The practical setup is to prepare music you have the rights to livestream, create a YouTube stream, configure an encoder with the stream URL and private stream key, then test the exact workload on your Pi and network before making it public. No official source validates a specific Raspberry Pi configuration for guaranteed 24/7 operation, so treat this as a setup to test and monitor, not a promise of uninterrupted uptime.
What the setup does—and what it does not guarantee
The Pi is the encoder host: playback software supplies the music and visual, an encoder packages them into a continuous stream, and YouTube receives it at the stream URL using your stream key. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers connecting an encoder; Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes hardware and performance, but does not certify a particular ambient-music setup for round-the-clock service.
There is no universally best Pi model or exact configuration established for this job. Choose settings your board and encoder can sustain, leave upload bandwidth headroom, and run an extended private or unlisted test while watching for dropped frames, audio problems, heat, and reconnect behavior.
Clear the music and prepare the program
Confirm rights for live use
Use original music or recordings whose rights expressly cover livestream distribution on YouTube in the territories where you plan to broadcast. “Ambient,” “royalty-free,” and “AI-generated” do not by themselves establish that you have permission. YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility for necessary rights, including music licensing rights, on the person providing the live content. Consider rights separately for the composition and sound recording, and for both the live broadcast and any retained archive or video-on-demand.

Choose a visual and establish audio routing
Your encoder workflow needs to produce continuous video as well as audio. A still image or slowly changing visual may suit an ambient stream, but test the chosen encoder’s actual input and output. Decide how the music reaches the encoder—such as a file player routed to an audio capture device or software input—and verify that the captured mix is the one you intend to broadcast. The official Raspberry Pi materials cited below list audio output options, not a ready-made ambient playback-and-capture recipe.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Enable live streaming on the channel. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup page. Allow time before your planned launch.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its encoder or stream settings. Copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s corresponding fields.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your event. Do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Select an ingest protocol and codecs supported by both ends. YouTube’s current general encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. A Pi generation, operating-system build, and encoder may not support every listed codec or resolution at a usable workload, so confirm the encoder’s capabilities rather than assuming compatibility.
Choose encoder settings and network capacity
Start with a modest resolution and frame rate suitable for the visual, then verify that the specific board and encoder can sustain them. Use YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the selected resolution and frame rate instead of copying an old command or third-party setting: bitrate targets depend on those choices and may change.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Video bitrate: set a constant bitrate where the encoder allows it, as YouTube recommends. The total outgoing stream bitrate must fit within the available upload capacity.
- Keyframes: use a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Stereo audio: YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3, a 44.1 kHz sample rate, and recommends 128 Kbps. Confirm that your encoder can provide the selected format and that the audio is actually present in its output.
- Transport: choose RTMPS when supported, as YouTube recommends encrypted transport.
Measure the upload connection from the place the Pi will run. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate; add the bitrate of any simultaneous backup stream when estimating demand. A stable wired connection can reduce reliance on variable Wi-Fi, but neither connection type guarantees uninterrupted service. YouTube recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate; see its streaming guidance.
Check power, heat, and audio on the Pi
Power and peripherals
Use a power supply appropriate for the exact Raspberry Pi model and include attached devices in the power budget. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5; its documentation notes that a 5V/3A supply limits downstream peripheral power. Check the model-specific power guidance before connecting USB audio interfaces, storage, or other peripherals.

Sustained load and cooling
Heavy encoding workloads can trigger thermal management and reduce clock speeds. Raspberry Pi’s cooling documentation describes Pi 5 options including the Active Cooler and fan case, and recommends active cooling for best performance. That guidance is not proof every stream needs a fan: monitor temperature and behavior during your own sustained test and provide cooling if the workload requires it.
Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance white paper reports Pi 5-series measurements under defined test conditions. Those benchmark results are workload-specific context, not certification of a YouTube stream, your encoder software, or 24/7 uptime. Do not infer a continuous-stream capability from a benchmark row alone; the actual resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, software path, and cooling all matter.

Verify the audio path
Raspberry Pi’s audio documentation lists HDMI, USB, and Bluetooth output across supported configurations, and a 3.5 mm line-level output on models 1 through 4. Output availability does not mean the encoder captures that playback automatically. Confirm routing in the operating system and encoder, then listen to the YouTube preview for the right source, clean levels, stereo balance, and interruptions. See Raspberry Pi audio configuration.
Test privately, launch, and monitor
- Run the encoder ahead of launch. YouTube advises configuring it in advance and starting it before the event. Use the actual music, visual, bitrate, and hardware arrangement you intend to keep running.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the event is reachable and that both audio and video look and sound right. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend checking the preview and monitoring quality.
- Keep a test private or unlisted for an extended run. Watch encoder and YouTube health indicators, audio/video quality, Pi temperature, and local logs. Test what happens if the network drops or the encoder restarts; reconnect behavior depends on your software and setup and is not established by the cited official guidance.
- Make it public only after the test meets your needs. Keep a plan for outages, restarts, and any recording you need. YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is an archive detail, not a recommendation to make a stream exactly 12 hours or a guarantee about archiving longer sessions. Check the current YouTube setup guidance for the latest behavior.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- You cannot go live yet: first-time channel activation may still be processing; YouTube says it can take up to 24 hours. Check live-stream eligibility and activation in YouTube Studio before launch.
- YouTube receives no signal: check that the encoder is running, the stream URL and key are in the correct fields, and outbound network access is available. If the key was exposed or reset, update the encoder with the current key.
- Stream health is poor or frames drop: compare total outgoing bitrate with measured upload capacity and restore YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if needed, then validate the new settings in another test.
- Audio is silent, wrong, or distorted: confirm the intended player output is routed into the encoder’s capture input; check the selected device, codec, sample rate, and levels; listen to the YouTube preview rather than relying only on local playback.
- The Pi slows down or becomes unstable over time: check model-appropriate power, peripheral draw, temperature, and sustained CPU/encoder load. Test a less demanding encode configuration and cooling changes individually so you can identify the bottleneck.
- The stream does not recover after an interruption: verify the encoder’s reconnect settings and inspect logs during a controlled network interruption. The cited official sources do not establish a universal reconnect setting, so behavior must be tested for your software and network.
- A music claim or restriction appears: stop and review the rights and permissions for the exact composition and recording, including livestream and archive use. A genre label or “royalty-free” description is not proof of YouTube live rights.
