If a saved sleep-music video starts over, first check that you are signed in to the same YouTube account and that the video still has a progress bar. YouTube says partially watched videos usually resume where you left off, except when they are almost complete; cleared watch history also removes progress bars. If the item is still a live broadcast rather than a replay, the guidance for saved videos may not apply.
First identify what is restarting
“Restarting” can describe several different behaviors, and the fix depends on which one you see:
- The same saved video starts at 0:00: check its progress bar and the account used to watch it.
- A live broadcast begins again: it is still live, not a saved replay. The official progress guidance below is for partially watched videos and does not establish how every live stream or device handles a return to playback.
- A playlist moves to another item: that is different from the same video losing its timestamp.
- Playback stops with “Video paused. Continue watching?”: this is an Autoplay-related confirmation prompt, not evidence that the saved position is wrong.
YouTube’s progress-bar guidance says: “When you select a partially watched video, the video will usually resume from where you left off.” It notes an exception when the video is almost complete.
Check the saved video’s progress
- Sign in to the account you used to watch. YouTube says progress indicators are available when signed in on TV, computer, or the YouTube mobile apps. If you switch accounts, the progress associated with the other account may not be visible.
- Find the same video and inspect the bar beneath its thumbnail. A partially watched video should show a progress indicator. Open that item rather than a different upload or a live broadcast with a similar title.
- If the bar looks out of date, refresh the browser or feed. YouTube says the indicator may not update straight away; refreshing may update it, but is not a guaranteed repair.
- Consider whether watch history was cleared. YouTube says clearing watch history removes all progress bars. You can review history controls in YouTube’s computer watch-history help.
Watch history is account-linked: YouTube Music says pausing history while signed in to YouTube also pauses it in YouTube Music for the same account. Videos watched while history is off will not appear in history. These details do not establish that pausing history alone causes every resume-position problem. Use Sleep Timer to stop playback at bedtime
YouTube’s Sleep Timer pauses playback after a duration you choose. It does not claim to save a bookmark or repair an incorrect resume point. The documented steps below are for the computer player; interface steps may differ on mobile or TV.
- Open the video on YouTube.
- Select Settings in the player.
- Choose Sleep Timer.
- Select how long the timer should run before playback pauses.
YouTube says the player gives a silent notification when playback pauses. If you are still awake, you can reset the timer; the same steps can adjust an active timer. See YouTube’s Sleep Timer instructions for computer.

Tell a continuation prompt apart from a restart
If YouTube displays “Video paused. Continue watching?”, it is asking you to confirm playback, not telling you that the video has returned to the beginning. YouTube documents the prompt when Autoplay is enabled after uninterrupted viewing for these intervals:

Keep a playlist, not a temporary computer queue
If you assembled sleep music in a computer queue, YouTube says that queue is not saved after the browser closes. Save the videos to a playlist if you want to return to the list later. YouTube’s queue guidance does not promise that a playlist stores the exact playback timestamp inside each video, so treat playlist persistence and resume position as separate things. What Premium does—and does not establish
YouTube Premium’s help page describes saving a video spot so you can resume across multiple devices. That is a cross-device continuation benefit, not a documented fix for a particular video that resumes at the wrong timestamp.
