To start a podcast on YouTube, create a public podcast playlist for your show and put its full episode videos in that playlist. An MP3 alone is not a YouTube podcast episode. YouTube’s podcast features can create additional discovery opportunities, but no setting guarantees more viewers. A reliable workflow is to set up the show clearly, keep its playlist focused, then use analytics to learn how people find and watch each episode.
What a YouTube podcast is
YouTube represents a podcast as a playlist and its episodes as videos in that playlist. The playlist is the show; each video is an episode. You can upload video episodes directly or use an audio-first distribution route, but an MP3 file by itself cannot be turned into a podcast episode in YouTube Studio. Give each show its own public podcast playlist. Keep full episodes together across seasons, and leave clips, unrelated uploads, and videos from other channels out of it. This makes the show’s intended listening or viewing order clearer and aligns with YouTube’s podcast discovery guidance.
Create the podcast in YouTube Studio
Choose the setup route that fits your show

Set up the show
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > New podcast, or choose an existing playlist and set it as a podcast.
- Enter the actual show name and a detailed description. Choose the playlist’s visibility and add a square thumbnail.
- Add new episode videos or select existing videos to include. Episodes must be videos; an MP3 on its own is not an episode.
- Review the playlist contents and order, then complete any account verification YouTube requests.
Use the show’s recognizable name rather than a generic title such as “Full Episodes” or “New Uploads.” YouTube recommends a public podcast for each show, with a descriptive name and detailed description. Keep seasons in the same podcast playlist rather than creating a separate podcast playlist for each season.

Put episodes in the order viewers should follow
Choose the playlist order based on how the show is meant to be consumed. For an episodic show, where most episodes stand alone, YouTube’s creation guidance generally recommends newest first. For a serial show, where later episodes build on earlier ones, it generally recommends oldest first. Make the choice easy to understand from the playlist, especially if a new viewer needs to start at the beginning.
- Episodic: Put the newest episode first so returning listeners can reach it quickly.
- Serial: Put the oldest episode first so a new listener can follow the story in sequence.
- Clips and extras: Put them in separate playlists rather than mixing them into the full-episode podcast playlist.
How YouTube podcast features can help discovery
Eligible podcast content may appear in YouTube Music, show podcast badges on Watch and Playlist pages, receive a spotlight on youtube.com/podcasts, and benefit from podcast-related search, recommendations, and Watch-page discovery. These are potential surfaces, not guaranteed placement or audience growth; YouTube does not provide a named growth figure in the cited guidance.

Marking a playlist as a podcast does not mean every playlist will qualify for every feature. YouTube notes that some content may not qualify, including content the creator does not own. Shorts made to support a podcast do not appear in YouTube Music. Keep the podcast playlist centered on the show’s own full episodes, and treat any additional exposure as an opportunity rather than a promise.

Distribute an audio-first show with RSS
YouTube documents RSS connection as another distribution route for podcasts, alongside Studio creation. Some podcast hosting platforms may also support YouTube distribution, but availability depends on the host; check its documentation rather than assuming every host offers it. The official overview is YouTube’s podcast distribution guidance.
Whichever route you choose, monetized uploads remain subject to YouTube’s monetization policies. Sponsored or endorsed content may require disclosure to viewers.
Use analytics to improve reach over time
There is no setup switch that guarantees more viewers. Instead, establish a baseline and use what viewers actually do to guide changes to episode packaging and promotion.

- In YouTube Studio, review the podcast analytics view. It can include views, watch time, traffic sources, audience demographics, retention, and revenue data.
- For an individual episode, open its video Reach report to see how viewers found it, including external sites or apps and videos that suggested it. The report also surfaces measures such as click-through rate, views, and watch time. See YouTube’s guide to video reach.
- Compare traffic sources and retention across episodes and over time. Look for where viewers arrive and where they continue watching or leave.
- Use those observed patterns to decide what to refine in episode packaging and promotion. Change one practical element at a time where possible, then check whether later reports show a different pattern.
Traffic reports explain where views came from; they do not by themselves prove why an episode performed differently. Use them as evidence for the next iteration, not as a promise that a particular title, thumbnail, or promotion tactic will increase views.
Keep a documentary podcast focused and compliant
For a documentary series, make the show identity and episode sequence clear in the podcast playlist. Keep the full documentary episodes there, and use separate playlists for trailers, clips, or related material. Before publishing, make sure you have the rights needed for the video and audio you upload. YouTube’s podcast discovery guidance also warns that content not owned by the creator may not qualify for some podcast features. If an upload is monetized, YouTube monetization policies still apply; disclose sponsored or endorsed content when required.
