To record a microphone, game, browser, or chat app on separate tracks, first route each source to its own Voicemeeter Banana virtual bus, then add each bus to OBS as a separate audio source. In OBS, assign those sources to recording tracks in Advanced Audio Properties and enable the tracks under Settings → Output. Keep a complete mix on track 1 if the recording must play correctly in standard video players.
Plan which sounds need separate tracks
List the sources you may want to adjust independently during editing—for example, narration, game audio, browser audio, and voice chat. Give each a clear name in Voicemeeter and OBS. The exact Windows device labels and routing depend on your installed Voicemeeter driver and setup, so use this as a sample plan rather than a universal device map.
The key distinction is routing versus recording tracks: Banana sends audio mixes to virtual outputs; OBS captures those outputs and decides which recording tracks contain them. If two inputs are sent to the same bus, they are combined into one mix and cannot later be separated as individual OBS sources.
Route sources through Voicemeeter Banana
Banana provides hardware and virtual input strips and five buses, including physical A buses and virtual B1/B2 outputs. The B buses are the outputs you can make available to OBS. See the Voicemeeter Banana product information and the Banana user manual for product and control details.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose a bus for each independent mix. For example, send a microphone to B1 and game audio to B2 if you need OBS to capture those mixes separately. Avoid sending sources that must remain independent to the same bus.
- Set the source’s strip controls. On the input strip carrying a source, enable the intended B bus. Use the strip controls to route each source according to your plan; the physical A buses are for hardware outputs, while B1/B2 are virtual outputs for applications.
- Check the combined-mix requirement. If a bus should carry more than one source, enable that bus on each relevant strip—but understand that OBS will receive their combined mix, not separate signals.
- Identify the installed output names. Banana’s virtual outputs correspond to B1 and B2, but driver generation can change the labels shown in Windows and OBS. Note the exact names displayed on your computer rather than relying on a label from another setup.
Add the Voicemeeter outputs to OBS
- In OBS, add an Audio Input Capture source for the first virtual output. Select the device corresponding to the Voicemeeter B1 output—often labelled Voicemeeter Output, though your installed label may differ.
- Add another Audio Input Capture source for the second virtual output, if you routed a separate mix to B2. The device may be labelled Voicemeeter AUX Output; confirm the name in your own device list.
- Rename each OBS source to describe its mix, such as “Mic” or “Game,” and check that the OBS mixer meters respond to the intended source.
- Prevent duplicate capture: if the same sound is also entering OBS through Desktop Audio or another capture source, disable that duplicate route where appropriate. Capturing a signal twice can produce an echo or an unexpectedly loud mix.
For bus and application-routing context, VB-Audio’s Voicemeeter setup guidance explains the general idea of routing audio between applications.
Assign OBS sources to recording tracks
- In the OBS Audio Mixer, select the gear icon and open Advanced Audio Properties. You can also reach this through the OBS Edit menu.
- For each captured source, tick the recording-track boxes that should contain it. Give each isolated source its own track. If you want a ready-to-listen full mix, also route the appropriate sources—or a dedicated combined mix—to track 1.
- Open Settings → Output and enable every recording track you assigned. Track checkboxes in Advanced Audio Properties alone do not ensure those tracks are written to the recording.
- Make a short test recording, then open it in the editor you intend to use. Confirm that each track contains the expected audio and that the full-mix track is usable before recording a long session.
The OBS Multiple Audio Track Recording Guide documents source-to-track assignment and enabling tracks in output settings. OBS also notes that “all standard video players will only play back one audio track at a time.” A file with several isolated tracks may therefore sound incomplete in a standard player if it has no complete mix on track 1; separate tracks are most useful when you plan to edit the recording.

When OBS can capture applications without Banana
If you only need to isolate supported applications, OBS Application Audio Capture may be simpler than setting up a mixer. OBS documents this feature for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11. The OBS Application Audio Capture Guide also cautions that some application audio may not work with this method.
- Use Application Audio Capture when the needed app is supported and direct capture meets your routing needs.
- If the app is incompatible, OBS’s documented fallback is to route its audio through a virtual cable and add the cable output as an OBS Audio Input Capture source.
- When capturing an app directly, disable global Desktop Audio if it would capture the same signal again and cause duplication or echo.
Troubleshoot missing, duplicated, or combined audio
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| An OBS source has no audio | The source is not routed to the selected B bus, or OBS has selected a different virtual device. | Check the relevant strip’s B1/B2 control, then compare the selected Audio Input Capture device with the installed labels in OBS and Windows. |
| Two sources cannot be edited independently | Both were routed to the same bus, so Banana combined them before OBS captured the signal. | Route them to different buses and capture each output as a separate OBS source. |
| The recording has echo or duplicate audio | The same sound is reaching OBS through more than one route, such as a Voicemeeter output and Desktop Audio. | Identify the duplicate capture path and disable it if it is not needed. |
| A track is missing from the recorded file | The track was not enabled in OBS output settings, even if sources were assigned to it. | Check both Advanced Audio Properties and Settings → Output. |
| A standard player plays only one mix | Standard video players generally play one audio track at a time. | Use track 1 for a complete mix when playback without editing matters; use an editor to work with isolated tracks. |
| Application Audio Capture does not capture an app | The application may be incompatible with direct capture. | Use the virtual-cable fallback described in the OBS guide, then capture the cable output as an Audio Input Capture source. |
Or let it run in the cloud
