Start with spoiler-light clues
Reveal these constraints one at a time if you want to preserve some of the solving challenge:
- The five-letter answer contains one vowel: O.
- No letter appears more than once.
- The word begins with S.
- The word ends with M.
Those clues leave three middle positions to solve. Keep O as the only vowel, avoid reusing S or M, and test plausible consonant combinations in the remaining spaces. This is a way to reason from the clues, not a claim about the New York Times editor’s intended solution path.

How Wordle feedback helps narrow a guess
Wordle gives players six guesses to find a five-letter word. After each guess, colored tiles show what the letters tell you:
- Green: the letter is in the answer and in the correct position.
- Yellow: the letter is in the answer but in a different position.
- Gray: the letter is not in the answer.
Use each result to update the constraints rather than treating every guess as a fresh start. For example, a green tile fixes a position; a yellow tile rules out that position for the letter; and gray tiles help eliminate letters. For this puzzle, the clues point to a word with O as its lone vowel, S at the beginning, and M at the end.
