Local output gives you more direct control but uses your computer and upload connection for every stream; a relay takes one feed from you and distributes it. Before the event, enable YouTube Live, confirm each destination account, calculate bandwidth if sending multiple local outputs, and test with representative audio and motion.
Choose how to distribute the stream
YouTube describes two main approaches: send separate outputs from a local hardware or software encoder, or send one encoded feed to a cloud relay that forwards it to selected platforms. The choice is mainly about control, computer capacity, upload bandwidth, setup and the number of destinations—not a guarantee that one method will produce better results in every setup. This is a comparison of the approaches in YouTube’s official guidance, not a performance test. If you choose a relay, verify its current supported destinations, account requirements and plan limits before relying on it for an event.
Prepare YouTube and the other destinations
Enable YouTube Live in advance
YouTube says a channel must be verified, have live streaming enabled and have no live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. Enabling a first live stream can take at least 24 hours after the initial request, so do not leave activation until event day. See Get started with live streaming.

Check each destination account
Make sure every destination account is active and in good standing. For destinations that use encoder credentials, find the current RTMP server URL and stream key in that platform’s live-stream setup. Some relays connect accounts instead; follow the relay’s current workflow in that case. Check each platform’s own documentation for its technical, account and content rules. If the program includes documentary footage, music, archival clips or other material you did not create, confirm you have the rights and that the stream complies with each destination’s policies.
Set up a distinct YouTube event
Create or select the YouTube live event you intend to broadcast, then configure the encoder to send to that event’s ingest destination and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for delivery when your encoder supports it. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Treat stream keys as credentials: do not publish or share them, and use the event-specific details shown in YouTube Studio.

Configure local multi-output streaming
Calculate the connection capacity you need
Add the target bitrates for all simultaneous outputs. YouTube’s example is 6 Mbps plus 4 Mbps, or 10 Mbps of combined target bitrate; its guidance recommends upload capacity around 1.5–2 times that sum, which makes 15–20 Mbps in that example. This is a stability recommendation, not a guarantee: shared household or venue traffic and connection variation can reduce available capacity. Leave practical headroom rather than treating a speed-test result as dedicated bandwidth.
- Write down the target bitrate for each destination’s chosen resolution and frame rate.
- Add those bitrates to find the combined outbound target.
- Plan for upload capacity of roughly 1.5–2 times the combined target, as YouTube recommends.
- Check the actual connection at the location and time you will stream, including any other devices or services using it.
Route and test each output
In the encoder, configure a separate output for each platform when using local distribution. Enter the matching server URL and stream key for each destination; for YouTube, point the output at the specific live event. Encoder interfaces differ, so use the current instructions for your encoder rather than assuming a particular menu or plugin is available. Check that each destination receives video and audio before the event starts.

For an example of a relay workflow, Restream’s vendor documentation describes connecting channels in Restream, selecting Restream in OBS’s Stream settings, and starting the broadcast from OBS. It also describes integrated chat and analytics; these are vendor-described features, not a general property of relays. See Restream’s OBS multistream workflow and its YouTube integration page, which names Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitch as examples of other destinations. Confirm current availability and plan limits directly with the service.
Test before the event and monitor the live stream
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test broadcast early enough to fix account, routing or connection problems.
- Include motion and audio similar to the real program; a static test screen may not reveal issues that appear during a moving documentary or a complex soundtrack.
- Confirm both picture and sound arrive at YouTube and every other destination, and check that the right event and stream key are in use.
- During the event, review messages and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. If a destination reports a problem, check its own status and requirements as well.
YouTube’s guidance notes simultaneous limits of 10 active streams per channel and 3 active streams per stream key. These are concurrent limits, not a recommendation to create extra outputs; check the current YouTube guidance before an event if your setup approaches them. Troubleshoot common simulcast problems
