Use Amazon S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval for older video assets that are rarely read but must be available in milliseconds when needed. First identify how often each group of files is accessed and how quickly your team must retrieve it; then move suitable existing S3 objects with lifecycle rules or upload new archive objects directly to the class. Check object sizes, the 90-day minimum storage duration, and retrieval, request, transition, and transfer charges before changing a large library.

What S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval does for a video library

S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval is an Amazon S3 storage class for long-lived, infrequently accessed data that still needs real-time access. The objects remain in an S3 bucket and can be read with an S3 GET request in milliseconds; you do not first restore them from an archive tier. AWS recommends considering it for data accessed about once per quarter and specifically identifies older media that might be needed for breaking news, video rendering, or content development. AWS Glacier storage classes

For a documentary or media archive, that makes it a candidate for finished footage, masters, or other older assets that are seldom opened but cannot be left waiting for an archive restore when a production need arises. It is not automatically the right class for every old file: a lower-cost archive tier may suit material that can tolerate delayed retrieval, while frequently used assets may belong in a class designed for more regular access.

Despite the name, this is an S3 storage class, not the separate Amazon Glacier vault service. Work with S3 buckets, S3 APIs, and S3 lifecycle configuration when using this class. Amazon S3 storage classes documentation

Decide which assets belong in Instant Retrieval

Map access frequency and urgency

Group assets by how often people actually retrieve them and how long they can wait when they do. An older interview or source clip with a plausible near-term editing use differs from a preservation copy that may never be opened. The deciding question for Instant Retrieval is whether the team needs a file immediately, rather than whether it is simply old.

  • Keep assets in an appropriate active-access class when teams routinely read or process them.
  • Consider Instant Retrieval for rarely accessed footage that still needs millisecond, real-time GET access.
  • Consider Flexible Retrieval or Deep Archive if a restore delay is acceptable for the assets.

Check object-size distribution

Instant Retrieval has a 128 KB minimum billable object size. Objects smaller than that are billed as though they were 128 KB, so a library containing many small thumbnails, captions, metadata files, or sidecars can have a different cost profile from one dominated by large video files. Review the object-size distribution before transitioning a broad set of prefixes. Amazon S3 pricing

Plan around the minimum duration

The minimum storage duration is 90 days. Deleting, overwriting, or transitioning an object before that period ends can incur a prorated charge for the remaining minimum duration. Avoid moving objects that are likely to be replaced or removed again soon unless the resulting charge is acceptable. AWS Glacier storage classes

Move video objects into the class

Transition existing S3 objects with lifecycle rules

For existing objects in S3 Standard or S3 Standard-IA, use an S3 Lifecycle rule to transition eligible objects to S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval. A lifecycle transition is an S3-managed change to the storage class, not a separate manual copy-and-delete workflow. Scope the rule to the intended bucket, prefixes, or tags so that active working files and small supporting assets are not swept in unintentionally. Lifecycle transition considerations

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the target assets using a stable prefix or object tags, and confirm that the selection excludes files still used in active editing workflows.
  2. In the S3 console, open the bucket and its Management tab, then create a lifecycle rule for the intended scope. AWS may update console labels; the key task is configuring an S3 Lifecycle rule on the bucket.
  3. Set the transition action to S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval and choose the intended object-age condition if the class is part of an aging policy.
  4. Review the rule scope, transition timing, object sizes, and 90-day minimum-duration implications before saving and allowing the rule to apply.
  5. Verify representative objects after transition by checking their storage class in S3 and testing retrieval through the normal S3 GET workflow used by your team.

Upload new archive objects directly

For new objects that already meet the access pattern, upload directly to S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval by specifying the storage class in the S3 PUT API or the relevant upload workflow. This avoids waiting for a lifecycle rule to transition those objects later. Confirm that the ingest process records the expected storage class and that downstream tools can access the object through S3. Amazon S3 storage classes documentation

Compare the S3 Glacier archive classes

The right choice depends on read frequency and how long the team can wait. These are AWS-described access patterns and retrieval characteristics; they do not determine the total cost for a particular library.

Factor S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval S3 Glacier Deep Archive
AWS-recommended access pattern About once per quarter One to two times per year Less than once per year
Retrieval Milliseconds; real-time GET Restore required; minutes to hours depending on retrieval tier Restore required; hours
Minimum storage duration 90 days 90 days 180 days
Minimum billable object size or metadata 128 KB minimum billable object size AWS lists 40 KB of per-object metadata for archival objects AWS lists 40 KB of per-object metadata for archival objects
Useful deciding question Must this file be immediately available? Can the team wait for a restore? Can the team wait longer for the lowest archive storage cost?

Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive require restoration before the object can be read, unlike Instant Retrieval. Their longer wait can make them suitable when immediate access is unnecessary, but restore timing and charges should be checked against current AWS terms for the selected region and retrieval option. Estimate the full cost before transitioning

Do not decide from the storage rate alone. AWS lists storage, requests, data retrieval, data transfer, and lifecycle transition costs. Instant Retrieval also has retrieval charges on GET requests, and lifecycle transitions can incur per-request ingestion charges. Pricing varies by AWS Region, and a library’s total depends on its object count and sizes, access rate, transition cadence, and outbound data volume. Amazon S3 pricing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Storage: estimate the volume by region and account for the 128 KB minimum billable size.
  • Requests: include expected GETs and other relevant S3 requests, not just stored terabytes.
  • Retrieval: estimate how much video data is likely to be read; low access frequency does not mean retrieval has no cost.
  • Transitions: account for lifecycle transition request charges and the frequency of transitions.
  • Transfer: include likely egress or other data transfer charges for the workflows that consume the footage.
  • Early changes: account for prorated minimum-duration charges if files may be deleted, overwritten, or moved again within 90 days.

Use the AWS pricing page for the region and current rates relevant to your account, then model more than one access scenario. Without workload-specific inputs, no universal savings figure or total bill is reliable.

Common transition and access problems

Objects are billed more than their apparent size suggests

If the library contains many objects below 128 KB, the minimum billable size can materially affect the estimate. Revisit whether those sidecars, thumbnails, or small metadata files need to move with the large video objects.

A file cannot be used immediately after an archive-tier change

Confirm the object’s actual storage class. Instant Retrieval supports real-time GET; Flexible Retrieval and Deep Archive need a restore step before retrieval. Make sure the lifecycle rule selected the intended class rather than another archive class.

The bill includes an unexpected charge after a transition

Review request, retrieval, transfer, and transition line items as well as storage, and compare the affected objects’ transition or deletion dates against the 90-day minimum. Early deletion, overwrite, or transition can cause a prorated minimum-duration charge.
