To randomize children’s videos, shuffle a list of episode files before FFmpeg reads it; to prevent repeats across several playlist cycles, use a scheduler that remembers recent episodes. A one-time shuffle prevents repeats within that pass, but looping the same list replays the same order.
What FFmpeg can—and can’t—shuffle
The concat demuxer reads files in the order written in its input script. It does not choose a random next file or enforce a “wait several episodes” rule. The practical division of work is simple: use Python or another scheduler to create the order, then let FFmpeg process that list sequentially. See the FFmpeg concat documentation.
Shuffle a folder once without repeating a file
1. Prepare the episode folder
Put the video files in a dedicated videos directory beside the script below. This example selects files ending in .mp4, sorts their paths for consistent input before randomization, and requires at least two files. It assumes portable filenames and that you run the script from the directory containing videos.
2. Generate a randomized concat list

playlist.write(f"file {path.as_posix()}n")random.shuffle changes the list in place. Each file appears once in the generated pass, so no file repeats until the list is exhausted. Python also documents random.sample(files, k=len(files)) as a way to return a new selection without replacement; see the Python 3.11 random documentation.

3. Create one shuffled output file
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 1 -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy shuffled.mp4-c copy avoids re-encoding when the files are compatible with the concat demuxer. If their streams or encoding parameters differ, copying may not work correctly; use a suitable normalization or filter-based concat workflow that re-encodes as needed.
Loop the randomized playlist
To repeat the entire ordered list indefinitely while producing an output, put the input option -stream_loop -1 before the input:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 1 -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy output.mp4FFmpeg documents -1 as infinite looping and 0 as no loop. The playlist is read in its listed order on every pass; FFmpeg does not reshuffle it between loops. Checking that the first and last entries differ prevents an immediate repeat at that single boundary, but does not prevent a repeat soon after it. See FFmpeg’s main options documentation.
Choose the repeat guarantee you actually need
No repeats within one pass
A shuffled list without replacement gives every listed file one appearance before the list starts over. It is suitable when the library is played once or when repeating the same cycle is acceptable.

No immediate repeat at the loop boundary
The example checks that the last file differs from the first. This only addresses the transition between the end and start of the same list. It does not create a cooldown spanning multiple cycles.
A multi-episode cooldown across cycles
For a rule such as “do not replay an episode until at least N other episodes have played,” use a scheduler that stores recent episode identities and selects only an episode outside that history window. The library needs enough distinct episodes to satisfy the chosen cooldown. If alternate encodes or duplicate files represent the same episode, treat them as one identity; a shuffle based only on filenames cannot detect that they tell the same story.

Concat compatibility, paths, and timing
Matching media streams
The concat demuxer expects files to have the same streams, codecs, and time bases. When they do not match, normalize the files first or use the concat filter and re-encode as appropriate. FFmpeg’s FAQ explains the distinction between concat-demuxer use and filter-based concatenation.
Safe paths and special characters
-safe 1 accepts relative paths made from portable characters and rejects unsafe path forms. The example deliberately uses simple relative paths. If filenames contain spaces or special characters, follow FFmpeg’s concat-script quoting and escaping rules; shell quoting is not a substitute for escaping paths inside the script. The manual documents -safe 0 as permitting any filename, but use it only when necessary for trusted local paths.

Duration accuracy
FFmpeg uses file durations to position timestamps for subsequent files, so inaccurate durations can cause artifacts at joins. Check the source files and output if transitions have timing or playback problems.
Troubleshooting
- The videos play in the same order every time: the concat file contains a fixed order. Regenerate it with the shuffle script when you want a new pass; looping the existing file repeats its current order.
- An episode plays twice close together: check whether the apparent duplicate is a different file for the same episode. The first/last check only guards one loop boundary; a longer cooldown needs persistent scheduling history.
- FFmpeg rejects a path: keep paths relative and portable for
-safe 1. For special characters, apply the concat script’s escaping rules. Use-safe 0only for trusted local paths that require it. - Stream copy fails or joins look wrong: compare the files’ streams, codecs, and time bases. Normalize incompatible inputs or use a filter-based concat workflow with re-encoding.
- Artifacts appear at file boundaries: check duration accuracy, because FFmpeg uses durations to position the next file’s timestamps.
- The command behaves differently from the online manual: the online FFmpeg documentation is regenerated nightly. Consult the documentation installed with your local build if you use an older version; see the FFmpeg documentation index.
