In the United States, CCLI distinguishes its Church Copyright License from its Streaming License; churches elsewhere should check the rights organizations and license terms that apply locally.
1. Check the rights before preparing the stream
In the United States, CCLI says its Church Copyright License permits projection of song lyrics from a computer or digital device. Its Streaming License covers livestreaming or uploading services that include worship music. These are distinct permissions: a license to project lyrics should not be assumed to cover broadcasting them online. Check the current terms, each song’s eligibility, and whether the planned use includes a live stream, an archived recording, or both. CCLI’s US copyright licensing information and its US streaming license guidance describe the relevant coverage.
If your church is outside the United States, do not assume that CCLI’s US terms apply. Consult the licensing bodies and terms for your country. For example, Church of England guidance for UK churches identifies CCLI, PRS, and One Licence as organizations to consult and discusses CCLI Streaming License coverage for live worship music on YouTube or Facebook in its stated context. Check the Church of England’s guidance and confirm current requirements with the relevant rights holders.
2. Prepare and check the lyrics
Enter the words in presentation software
Use the church’s presentation software to create or select the song, divide its words into slides, and check every line against an authorized source. ProPresenter is one documented example: its official user guide covers song presentation and church copyright information. It is an example, not the only suitable product; choose software your operators know and can route into the stream.

Make each slide easy to follow
- Use a type size and contrast that remain clear in a small video player, including on a phone.
- Keep line breaks and slide changes aligned with the congregation’s singing rather than advancing too quickly.
- Preview the output at the same aspect ratio as the stream and check that no words are hidden by overlays or cropped at the edges.
- Rehearse the transitions between the camera view and lyric slides, including the first and last slide of each song.
These are practical production checks, not a claim that one font, layout, or display mode works best for every service.
3. Choose how lyrics appear in the video
CCLI’s US streaming guidance describes two options: lyrics embedded over the stream image, or lyrics displayed as the background. Neither is universally better; choose based on the camera coverage, how much room the words need, and the operator’s ability to manage transitions. CCLI’s streaming FAQ addresses both display forms.

Route the presentation into the stream
Configure the church’s video setup so the lyric presentation is included in the outgoing program. The exact routing steps depend on the presentation software and streaming setup; the sources here do not establish a universal hardware configuration or a single best product. Before the service, confirm that the stream preview shows the correct output, lyrics are legible, and the camera and lyric views switch as intended.
4. Put the license numbers in the description
For streams covered by the relevant CCLI licenses in the United States, CCLI recommends including both the Church Copyright License number and the Streaming License number in the stream or upload description. Follow the current CCLI instructions for the exact numbers and required reporting; do not treat displaying a number as a substitute for having the applicable license or permission. 5. Treat recordings and lyric videos separately
Showing lyrics on screen does not by itself clear the rights to a recording or video used with them. CCLI says Streaming Plus extends coverage to specified authorized master recordings, backing tracks, and multitracks from authorized sources. Its guidance also says video content generally needs permission from the copyright owner, with a stated exception for SongSelect Lyric Videos under the applicable terms. Check the precise current license and the rights for each audio and visual work rather than assuming one permission covers everything. CCLI’s reporting guidance explains the Streaming Plus distinction.
A video being available on YouTube or another video-sharing site does not make it free to rebroadcast. CCLI advises churches to check the source and rights; it identifies SongSelect Lyric Videos as content made for church use, subject to its terms. Its guidance also cautions that the Church Copyright License and Streaming Plus do not cover the visual element of a song video as a general rule. 6. Rehearse and troubleshoot before going live
- Lyrics are missing from the stream: Check that the stream is receiving the presentation output, not just the camera feed. Verify the selected scene or source and inspect the stream preview.
- Lyrics are difficult to read: Increase text size or contrast, shorten lines, and preview on a phone-sized display. For a busy camera image, test a more legible overlay treatment or use full-screen lyrics.
- Slides advance at the wrong time: Rehearse the song with the operator, correct slide breaks, and agree on cues for repeats, pauses, and transitions.
- The camera or lyrics disappear during a switch: Check the presentation and streaming scene assignments, then rehearse switching in both directions before the service.
- A recording or video may not be covered: Pause its use until the church has checked the relevant license terms and obtained any necessary permission from the rights holder.
