To show the current song on a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream, add an overlay that receives track metadata from the player or playlist. OBS does not automatically know which track is playing just because it is sending a live stream to YouTube. Choose an overlay that matches how your music is played, add it to the scene, then test track changes, pauses, and long titles before relying on it unattended.
What a now-playing overlay needs
A track label has two parts: a source of per-track metadata (such as title and artist) and a visible element in your streaming scene. Your encoder sends audio and video to YouTube, but it does not create track metadata by itself. YouTube’s guide explains that “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” It describes connecting an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room with a server URL and stream key, not a native mechanism for reading the current song from a separate playlist. YouTube’s encoder guide
That distinction matters for a continuous lofi broadcast: the overlay must read from the player or playout system that actually advances the tracks. YouTube’s live video does not automatically expose the source playlist’s current track to OBS.
Choose the route that matches your playback
| Route | Best fit | OBS display | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Music on stream browser extension | YouTube or YouTube Music playback when its supported title inputs match your setup | Browser source overlay | Feature claims come from its OBS forum listing; verify your playlist or chapter format. |
| YouTube Music desktop app bridge | People playing music specifically through the th-ch YouTube Music desktop app | Native text and image sources | Requires a local Python receiver; closing the app can leave the last title visible. |
| Streamling local overlay app | People who want player detection and a customizable local overlay | Browser source served locally | Current availability, maintenance and unattended long-run operation are not established by its repository description. |
| Playout platform’s Now Playing element | A managed media library that already supplies file metadata | Element in the platform’s composition editor | Platform-specific; it is not a direct browser-playlist-to-OBS setup. |
Route A: Add the Music on stream browser overlay
The OBS Project Forum listing describes Music on stream as a Chrome extension with a browser overlay. It lists YouTube and YouTube Music among supported sources and says it can use YouTube chapters or video-description playlists as title inputs. The listing also describes a theme editor, CSS customization, an option to hide the overlay when music is paused, and scrolling for long titles. These are the listing’s feature claims, not independently verified compatibility findings. The page reports that the resource was created April 12, 2024 and last updated September 18, 2025. - 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check the extension’s current installation instructions and confirm that the playback source and title input you use—chapters or a description playlist—match what it supports.
- Install and configure the extension according to its instructions, then add its provided overlay URL as a Browser Source in the OBS scene used for the live stream.
- Position and size the overlay so it remains readable over the lofi video. Use the extension’s theme or CSS controls if needed for contrast and layout.
- Preview a track change, pause playback, and check a long title. Confirm that the title updates and that the chosen pause and overflow behavior looks right before going live.
This is the simplest route when the stream’s actual browser player and playlist or chapter data fit the extension’s inputs. Do not assume every YouTube playlist format supplies usable per-track titles.
Route B: YouTube Music desktop app to native OBS sources
A public GitHub project documents a bridge for YouTube Music desktop playback through the th-ch desktop app. Its described flow uses the app’s Tuna OBS plugin to send metadata locally; a Python receiver writes a title text file and cover image file, which OBS can display using native sources. This is a community example, not a feature supported by Google or OBS. The project README

- Set up and run the project’s Python receiver using the README’s instructions. It can be run manually or as a user service.
- In OBS, add a text source and configure it to read the receiver’s title text file. Add an image source pointing to its cover image file.
- Play tracks through the desktop app and check that the title and cover change in the OBS preview. Test pausing, stopping and closing the app as well as track changes.
The README notes that fully closing the app leaves the last track visible because the receiver has no staleness timeout. If that is unsuitable for your broadcast, add a clear or timeout mechanism and verify its behavior before leaving the stream unattended. This bridge is for the YouTube Music desktop app; it should not be treated as a bridge for ordinary YouTube browser playback.
Route C: Use a local music overlay application
Streamling’s repository describes an app that detects supported music players and serves a local web overlay for OBS or other streaming software. It lists YouTube and YouTube Music in browsers among its sources, and describes displaying title and artist while transitioning or disappearing when playback changes, stops or pauses. The project describes the app as freeware. Streamling’s repository

Route D: Use a playout platform’s built-in Now Playing element
If your stream is assembled from a managed media library rather than a browser player feeding OBS, a playout platform may offer a built-in Now Playing element. A vendor help article dated July 9, 2026 describes an element in a composition editor that updates when a new track or video starts, supports title and artist formatting and visibility behavior, and reads metadata from the media file or library. It advises correcting file metadata and managing long-title overflow. The vendor’s Now Playing help page

- Correct the metadata at its source. For a library-based element, inspect the file or library title and artist fields; the displayed label reflects that metadata. For a browser overlay, confirm that the chapter or description playlist titles are accurate.
- Plan for long titles. Use scrolling, wrapping, or a layout that prevents truncation where the tool allows it. Preview the longest likely title against the actual background.
- Decide what should happen when playback stops. Some tools can hide on pause or stop; the documented YouTube Music bridge can leave a stale title after the desktop app closes. Test the behavior you will actually use.
- Test refresh and recovery behavior. Restart the player and overlay process, refresh the OBS browser source if applicable, and verify that the correct track appears again.
- Do not assume a title proves music rights. A visible label is not evidence of licensing or permission to broadcast a track. Check the rights and YouTube policies applicable to the music you use; the overlay tools described here do not establish copyright clearance.
None of the cited tool descriptions establishes uninterrupted operation for a 24/7 broadcast. Test the full playback-to-overlay chain before leaving it running continuously.

Common problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No title appears | The overlay has no metadata input, or its source does not match your player. | Confirm the correct chapters or description playlist for Music on stream, or confirm the desktop app and Tuna plugin for the Python bridge. |
| The title never changes | The player is not sending updates, or the title source is static. | Test an actual track transition and verify the metadata path from player to overlay or receiver. |
| The previous title remains after playback ends | The tool retains the last received value; the Python bridge documents no staleness timeout after app closure. | Use a supported hide-on-stop behavior or add and test an appropriate clear/timeout mechanism. |
| Text is cut off or hard to read | Long metadata exceeds the overlay area or lacks contrast. | Adjust width, placement, styling or overflow behavior, then preview a long title over the live background. |
| Overlay is blank after a restart | The local helper or browser source may not have reconnected to the player. | Restart the relevant app or receiver, refresh the browser source where applicable, and confirm the title updates before going live again. |
Encoder setup is separate from the title overlay
YouTube’s encoder workflow still applies to sending the live program: copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room into the encoder, start the stream, and, for a scheduled stream, wait for preview and click Go live. The encoder can be streaming software or a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube lists webcams, microphones and headsets as examples of audio/video equipment to connect if your stream uses them; those devices are not requirements for a now-playing label. YouTube’s encoder guide
Or let it run in the cloud
The overlay methods above add a track label to a live scene; they do not by themselves keep a computer-based OBS setup running after the computer is off. If your priority is keeping uploaded lofi videos playing continuously on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists. Upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The track-title overlay still needs its own metadata source and setup.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs from the cloud.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
