To show the current video title in a vMix YouTube playlist stream, add a Title input, create a text field for the title, and display it through a vMix overlay. You can update the field manually or use vMix Web Scripting and the API to change and time the overlay. The official vMix documentation does not establish automatic binding between a playlist’s current item name and a title field, so a hands-off update needs a configured workflow that you verify with your own playlist and vMix version.
What you need to set up
- A vMix Title input, using a built-in template or a custom title made in GT Designer.
- A text field in that title for the program or video name.
- An overlay channel to bring the title on screen.
- A decision about how the title text will be updated: by an operator or by a configured script/API workflow.
The YouTube destination does not change these graphics steps; the title card is configured inside vMix. vMix lists YouTube streaming in its training videos.
Create the now playing title
- Add a Title input in vMix. Choose a built-in template, or create a custom title in GT Designer. vMix describes Title inputs as a way to add titles and lower thirds, and text can be edited through the input’s right-click menu. See vMix Title documentation.
- In the Title Editor, add or identify the text field that should show the current item. Give it a clear name, then note the exact field name displayed by vMix. For a GT title, the API field name includes the
.Textsuffix; for example,Headline.Text. Your template may use a different name. - Test the title by changing the text in the editor and bringing the Title input onto an overlay. Check that the text is readable over your video and does not cover important picture content.
Choose how the title will follow playback
Manual updates
For a playlist advanced by an operator, edit the title field when you change the video. This is the simplest approach and keeps a person in control of the displayed wording, but the title will not stay aligned unless someone updates it at each change.
Scripted or API updates
vMix’s HTTP API supports changing a title field with Function=SetText. You identify the Title input and set SelectedName to the exact field name and Value to the text to display. Inputs can be identified by name or GUID. Field names are case-sensitive where the API documentation specifies it. Consult the vMix User Guide for API details.

A script can sequence a text change, overlay-in, a delay, and overlay-out. The following is an illustrative pattern based on the official Web Scripting example, not a tested production script. Replace the input name, field name, title, overlay channel, and delay for your setup. URL-encode special characters in the value when needed.
Function=SetText&Input=NowPlaying.gtzip&SelectedName=Headline.Text&Value=Example%20title Function=OverlayInput1In&Input=NowPlaying.gtzip Sleep 4000 Function=OverlayInput1Out&Input=NowPlaying.gtzip

In this example, the card appears on overlay 1, remains for 4,000 milliseconds, then goes out. The sequence syntax and Sleep command are documented in vMix Web Scripting. Set the delay to suit your graphics and program; the example value is not a required timing.
Configure playlist behavior and item changes
The vMix PlayList guide describes sequential playback and controls including Loop, Manual Mode, Next, and Previous. Choose the playback behavior that matches your show, and decide what event or operator action will supply the next title text. See the vMix User Guide.

vMix Triggers documentation describes OnCompletion for video and list inputs when playback reaches its end, assuming Loop is not enabled. This can be part of a configured sequence, but it does not itself establish that vMix will read the next playlist item’s name and place it into a title field. Test the event, the title update, and the overlay timing together with the actual production playlist before relying on them live. See vMix Triggers documentation.
Test before going live
- Confirm that the script targets the intended Title input and the exact field name from the Title Editor.
- Advance through the playlist using the same Loop or Manual Mode behavior planned for the stream.
- Check that the title changes at the intended point, and that the overlay goes out when expected.
- Test titles containing spaces or special characters; encode values as needed for the scripting/API request.
- If an update depends on completion, verify the trigger with the real playlist and confirm whether Loop is enabled.
Common problems and fixes
The title does not change
Check the Title input identifier, then compare SelectedName with the field name shown in the Title Editor, including any .Text suffix. Also confirm the new text is supplied as the request’s Value.

The title changes but is not visible
Confirm that the title is assigned to the overlay channel used by the script and that the matching overlay-in function is called. Verify the Title input itself in vMix before debugging the text update.
The title stays on screen or disappears too soon
Check that the script reaches both the overlay-in and overlay-out steps and that the delay is appropriate. The documented Web Scripting pattern uses a Sleep command between them.

The displayed title gets out of sync with the playlist
A playlist transition does not, by itself, prove that its item name is being sent to the title field. Use an operator update or configure a reliable source for each item’s display text, then test transitions—including loop and completion behavior—before using the workflow live.
