There are two practical ways to share a computer screen during a YouTube livestream: use streaming encoder software for a screen-led production, or use the screen-sharing control in Live Control Room’s webcam workflow. The webcam option needs a connected webcam and microphone; an encoder is the more flexible choice for gameplay, overlays, or multiple sources.

Choose the screen-sharing method that fits your stream

Method What it needs Best suited to
Live Control Room webcam workflow A connected webcam and microphone A straightforward presentation sharing a screen, window, or browser tab
Streaming encoder software A computer running an encoder; optional external audio or video hardware Screen-led presentations, gameplay, overlays, and more controlled or multi-source layouts

YouTube describes encoders as a way to share a screen or broadcast gameplay. It maintains a verified-encoder list; the listed products are not made by YouTube.

Share your screen with encoder software

  1. Confirm your channel can livestream. You need a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s general live-stream guidance says creators must be at least 16. Check your current eligibility and account status in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  2. Create or select a stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live to enter Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Copy its stream URL and stream key.
  3. Connect the encoder. Select its YouTube preset if available. Otherwise, enter the stream URL and matching stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. If entering a server manually, use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room; RTMPS is RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
  4. Add the material to show. In the encoder, add the screen or application window as a video source. Configure the audio source you intend to use, then check that the picture and sound appear as expected in the encoder preview.
  5. Start the encoder and inspect Live Control Room. Start sending the stream from the encoder, then wait for the incoming preview. Check the preview before selecting Go live in Live Control Room.
  6. End the broadcast cleanly. When finished, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Share a screen, window, or tab from the webcam workflow

YouTube also documents screen sharing from Live Control Room’s webcam flow. This is a browser-based option, not the encoder route: a webcam and microphone must be connected.

  1. Open Live Control Room and start the webcam livestream.
  2. Select Share screen, choose the entire screen, a window, or a browser tab, then select Share.
  3. To end sharing, select Stop Sharing in Live Control Room or use the browser’s stop-sharing control.

If you share a browser tab that supports webcam, that tab’s audio is shared by default. For a presentation where you only need a simple screen share, this workflow may be enough; for gameplay, overlays, or several production sources, use an encoder. See YouTube’s webcam livestream instructions.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check readiness, audio, and upload capacity

  • Test before the event. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream, checking the preview in Live Control Room, and watching stream health and messages while live. Its encoder guidance recommends setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before a scheduled event. See YouTube’s livestream tips and streaming tips.
  • Allow bandwidth headroom. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom beyond the stream bitrate. Other people or devices using the same connection can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream. Check stream health during the broadcast rather than assuming the connection will remain clear.
  • Check the actual program. Confirm the intended screen or window is visible, the relevant application is not obscured by private material or notifications, and the audio source is the one viewers should hear. Do not go live until the incoming preview looks and sounds right.

When an encoder or webcam share does not work

  • There is no Go Live option or the stream will not start: check channel verification, live-stream restrictions, and whether first-time activation has completed. Activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • Live Control Room receives no picture: confirm the encoder is running, the screen or window is added as a video source, and the encoder is using the stream URL and key for the stream selected in Live Control Room.
  • The preview is unstable or stream health shows problems: check available upload capacity, leave the recommended 20% headroom, and consider whether other users or devices are consuming the connection. Test again before the scheduled event.
  • The webcam workflow cannot share a screen: connect a webcam and microphone, then use Share screen from the webcam livestream. To stop, use Stop Sharing in Live Control Room or the browser control.
  • The stream continues after you finish: end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder from sending content. Eligible streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube livestream—not to share a live desktop, webcam, or gameplay session—StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
