How to Set YouTube Live Bitrate for a 1080p Loop Stream

For a 1080p YouTube Live loop, match bitrate to the incoming codec and frame rate. YouTube recommends 10–17 Mbps depending on whether the stream is 30 or 60 fps and uses AV1, H.265 or H.264.

For a 1080p YouTube Live stream, set bitrate according to the video’s frame rate and the codec you send to YouTube: at 30 fps, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264; at 60 fps, it recommends 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. A loop does not require a separate bitrate setting: use the same guidance as for any live encoder stream, then test and monitor stream health.

Recommended bitrate for 1080p

The figures below are YouTube’s recommended video-ingestion bitrates in its encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. Choose the row matching both the frame rate and codec your encoder actually sends. Mbps means megabits per second; multiply by 1,000 for kbps.

Video sent to YouTube Codec YouTube listed minimum YouTube recommended
1080p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps (4,000 kbps) 10 Mbps (10,000 kbps)
1080p at 30 fps H.264 5 Mbps (5,000 kbps) 14 Mbps (14,000 kbps)
1080p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 4 Mbps (4,000 kbps) 12 Mbps (12,000 kbps)
1080p at 60 fps H.264 6 Mbps (6,000 kbps) 17 Mbps (17,000 kbps)

The listed minimums are not the recommended targets. For example, 6 Mbps is YouTube’s listed minimum for 1080p60 H.264, not its recommendation; the recommended value for that combination is 17 Mbps.

Does a loop need a different bitrate?

No separate loop-stream bitrate appears in YouTube’s cited encoder guidance. Apply the ordinary recommendation for the resolution, actual frame rate and codec being ingested. A 1080p source at 30 fps should use the 30 fps row, even if you call the output “1080p60” elsewhere; selecting a higher frame-rate row does not make a 30 fps source into 60 fps.

YouTube’s guidance does not promise that looping can run continuously for an unlimited duration, nor does it provide a loop-specific bitrate or uptime rule. Treat bitrate and continuous operation as separate questions: configure the encoder using the table, and monitor the stream while it runs.

Configure the encoder for 1080p

  1. Create or select the live stream: In YouTube Studio, open Go Live to reach the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. YouTube supports software and standalone hardware encoders. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the connection process.
  2. Match resolution, frame rate and codec: Set the encoder output to 1080p and the source’s actual frame rate. Choose the bitrate from the matching row above for the codec being sent. YouTube recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. If you need to select them manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings in the Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
  3. Use constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval: Set bitrate encoding to CBR and keyframe frequency to 2 seconds; do not set the interval above 4 seconds. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 among its encoder settings. A compatible choice depends on the encoder and workflow you use.
  4. Check the other signal settings: For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Its other advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame and CABAC. For stereo audio, its listed settings are AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Match audio configuration to the production; changing video bitrate is not a way to fix an audio-setting mismatch.
  5. Test and preview: Check available upload capacity, then test with audio and picture movement similar to the real stream. Preview in the Live Control Room before starting and watch stream-health messages during the broadcast. YouTube recommends using a reliable quality for the available connection and checking upload speed. Its advice is: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Keep the upload stable

The recommended bitrate is what YouTube advises for the encoded video; it does not guarantee that your internet connection or encoder can sustain it. Leave capacity for the rest of the connection’s traffic rather than treating a speed-test result as dedicated stream bandwidth. If the upload fluctuates or stream health reports problems, test again and choose a quality your connection can maintain reliably. A lower stable setting is more useful than a higher setting that repeatedly fails, though settings below YouTube’s recommendation may reduce picture quality.

Use representative movement in the test: a mostly still documentary image and a scene with fast motion can stress encoding differently. Check both picture and audio, and leave the stream in preview long enough to see whether the connection remains stable before relying on it.

Troubleshoot common bitrate problems

  • Stream health warns about bitrate or connection: Confirm the encoder is using the intended CBR value and test upload capacity again. Reduce output quality if your connection cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate, then test and preview before going live.
  • The image looks poor despite choosing 1080p: Confirm that the encoder is actually sending 1080p, identify the ingestion codec and frame rate, and compare the configured value with the relevant YouTube recommendation. Resolution alone does not determine the correct bitrate.
  • You are unsure whether to use the 30 fps or 60 fps row: Match the frame rate of the video being ingested. Do not choose the 60 fps recommendation solely because the resolution is 1080p.
  • The encoder cannot use the selected codec: Use a codec supported by your encoder and consult YouTube’s corresponding row. The H.264 recommendations differ from AV1/H.265, so do not assume their bitrate values are interchangeable.
  • A loop stops or drops even though its bitrate is configured: The bitrate table does not establish a loop’s maximum duration or guarantee uninterrupted uptime. Check encoder and connection status, use the Live Control Room’s stream-health information, and test the full intended setup.
