You can stream to YouTube from an Ubuntu EC2 instance by running an encoder on the server, then connecting it to the RTMPS URL and stream key for your event in YouTube Live Control Room. Choose an India AWS region based on current availability, latency and price; there is no single EC2 instance size or India-specific cost that suits every resolution and encoding workload.

What you need before setting up EC2

  • An Ubuntu Server Amazon Machine Image (AMI) published by Canonical. Choose the required release and architecture, and confirm the image and instance type are available in your intended AWS region. Canonical explains its official Ubuntu images for AWS.
  • An EC2 key pair and a security group that allows SSH from your own known IP range where practical. Your encoder connects out to YouTube; you do not need to expose an inbound RTMP port for that contribution stream.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to stream live. YouTube says a verified channel is required and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days; check current live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • An encoder that supports your chosen protocol and codec, plus a source video, live production feed, or other material appropriate for your intended stream.

Use the region that best balances latency to your audience and YouTube ingest, availability of the required instance type, and current price. “In India” does not imply a particular region, instance size, or rupee cost: verify those details in the AWS console and current regional pricing before launching.

Choose an EC2 instance for the encoder

There is no universally correct instance size for YouTube Live. The required compute depends on whether you are encoding in software on the CPU or using a GPU-capable instance or external encoder, as well as codec, resolution, frame rate, preset, and workload. Network bandwidth also varies by EC2 instance type. Check the selected type’s current specifications and availability in your region; do not assume that a machine able to run Ubuntu can sustain your chosen encode.

  • CPU software encoding: compare the processor capacity with the encoder’s expected workload at the target codec, resolution, frame rate, and quality setting.
  • GPU-capable instance or external encoder: consider this when the workload benefits from hardware encoding, but verify the encoder supports the chosen hardware and codec. No specific type is established as best for every use.
  • Network capacity: ensure the instance can sustain the video and audio bitrate with headroom. YouTube recommends about 20% extra bandwidth beyond the stream’s target rate; see its streaming tips.

Launch Ubuntu and secure access

  1. Select a region and AMI. In the AWS console, choose the intended India region, then launch a current official Ubuntu Server AMI for the desired release and architecture. Confirm the selected EC2 type is offered in that region.
  2. Choose a key pair. Create or select an EC2 key pair and keep the private key secure. You will need the matching key to connect.
  3. Configure the security group. Allow SSH only from your operator IP range where practical. AWS warns that opening SSH or RDP to all IP addresses is unsafe for production; its security group rule guidance describes the access rules. Allow outbound connectivity so the instance can reach package repositories and YouTube’s ingest service.
  4. Launch and connect. After the instance is running, connect using the private key and Ubuntu account name ubuntu. Canonical documents the Ubuntu account and connection approach in its EC2 image documentation.
  5. Update and install your encoder. Update Ubuntu and install or configure the encoder you have chosen. Encoder installation steps vary by software and release; follow that encoder’s current Ubuntu instructions. The exact software and instance combination must be validated for your workload.

Configure YouTube Live and the encoder

  1. Confirm live access and create or select the event. Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the channel’s eligibility and any event-specific settings.
  2. Copy the event’s ingest details. Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room for that stream. Do not copy a generic URL from an old tutorial: use the values YouTube provides for the actual event. YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as “a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” See YouTube’s encoder settings and its RTMPS instructions.
  3. Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, put it in a public script or share it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Live Control Room before using the stream again.
  4. Choose supported output settings. YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 among supported codecs, with up to 60 fps, and recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Confirm your encoder supports the selected codec and that the EC2 instance can encode it in real time.
  5. Set the bitrate to match the output. For H.264, YouTube’s published recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular instance can encode or upload steadily at that rate. Set audio and video consistently with your source and encoder.
  6. Check the RTMPS endpoint if there is a certificate error. Verify the exact RTMPS address copied from Live Control Room. YouTube says to try specifying port 443 if needed; consult its RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.

Do not treat an example encoder command as universal: options and syntax differ by encoder, codec, and source. Use the encoder’s documentation to map the YouTube URL, key, output resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval to its actual fields or command options.

Test the stream before the event

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test where appropriate, and allow time to resolve encoder, network, and event-setting problems before a scheduled broadcast.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health status while the encoder is running.
  3. Test realistic audio and video motion, not just a static screen. Confirm audio is present, in sync, and not clipping, and that motion remains smooth at the chosen frame rate.
  4. Verify the instance sustains the selected output rate with YouTube’s recommended approximately 20% bandwidth headroom. Watch for dropped frames or encoder overload and reduce workload or select more suitable capacity if necessary.

Common problems and fixes

  • SSH connection fails: check that the instance is running, you are using its current address and matching private key, the login is ubuntu, and the security group allows SSH from your current IP.
  • Encoder cannot connect to YouTube: confirm outbound network access, the event is ready in Live Control Room, and both the RTMPS URL and key are copied correctly. For an SSL certificate error, recheck the exact RTMPS URL and try port 443 if needed.
  • YouTube reports unstable connection or dropped frames: compare the target bitrate with available network capacity and preserve about 20% headroom. Check the instance’s network characteristics and avoid competing traffic.
  • Video stutters or the encoder falls behind: the chosen codec, resolution, frame rate, or encoder settings may exceed the instance’s compute capacity. Reduce the encoding workload or use more suitable compute or an external encoder, then repeat a realistic test.
  • Stream looks different from the source: review output resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and the encoder’s scaling or quality settings; confirm the source itself has the expected properties.
  • Access is exposed more broadly than intended: tighten inbound SSH rules to the operator’s IP range and rotate any stream key that has been disclosed.

What EC2 streaming costs in India

Your bill can include instance runtime, attached storage, public IPv4, and data transfer. The amounts depend on region, instance type, configuration, and how long and how much you stream. Check current AWS pricing for the exact region and resources before starting; no India-region price estimate or all-in total is established here.

AWS states that customers receive 100 GB of internet data transfer out per month, aggregated across AWS services and Regions, except China and GovCloud. This is an AWS-wide allowance, not a stream-specific quota or a complete cost estimate; streaming volume and all other applicable charges still matter. See AWS EC2 pricing.

For a temporary stream, stop the encoder and terminate the instance when it is no longer needed. Terminating an instance does not necessarily remove every separately billable resource: review attached storage and other resources in the console. EC2 usage is billed while the instance runs, as described in AWS pricing information.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream from uploaded videos rather than a live camera or production feed, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to maintaining an Ubuntu encoder on EC2. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud service loops the uploaded video without requiring a home computer, OBS, or home internet connection to stay on. It streams to YouTube only and does not broadcast from a camera.
