How to Set Up Split-Screen Live Streaming on YouTube

Learn how to arrange two cameras, gameplay and a webcam, or other sources in OBS for YouTube Live—and how that differs from YouTube’s horizontal and vertical formats.

To show two cameras, gameplay and a webcam, or another combination in one YouTube Live broadcast, arrange the video sources in an encoder such as OBS Studio, then send that composed scene to YouTube. In OBS, each input is a source within a scene; you position, resize, crop, and layer those sources on the canvas. You do not need a new camera, microphone, capture card, or paid software unless your chosen inputs require hardware you do not already have.

This is different from YouTube’s horizontal-and-vertical dual-format feature. That feature presents different aspect ratios to viewers; it does not create a multi-panel scene for you.

What “split-screen” means for a YouTube livestream

In this guide, split-screen means combining multiple video sources into one stream canvas. For example, you might put two participants’ cameras side by side, or show gameplay in a large panel with a presenter’s webcam in a smaller panel. OBS composes those sources; YouTube receives the resulting video from the encoder. YouTube identifies encoder streaming as the option for broadcasts using overlays and externally arranged camera or microphone inputs (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming).

YouTube’s simultaneous horizontal and vertical live formats are a separate presentation feature. They do not replace the composition steps below.

Before you build the scene

Check YouTube Live eligibility

YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified, must have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16 years old. The cited guidance does not state a universal 24-hour wait after verification, so do not assume that wait is a current requirement. Check YouTube’s page for current eligibility details and interface changes (YouTube Help).

Identify the sources you actually need

Each panel must come from an available input. Depending on the composition, that could be a webcam, a game or application capture, a display, a capture device, an image, or text. OBS can use these as separate sources. A capture card is only relevant if the particular device or console feed needs one; it is not a general requirement for split-screen streaming. Likewise, buy a camera or microphone only if you need one and do not already have a suitable input.

Choose a layout that remains readable

  • Two equal panels: useful for two people speaking to the audience. Leave enough space for faces and avoid cropping heads or captions.
  • Large panel with picture-in-picture: useful when gameplay or a presentation is the main content and a presenter is secondary.
  • Screen plus camera: keep important interface text large enough to read at the output size, especially on phones.

Plan for the audio as well as the picture. Two visible cameras do not automatically mean two useful audio feeds: choose the intended microphone or device inputs and check that speech is intelligible without distracting overlap.

Set up split-screen in OBS and connect it to YouTube

  1. Create a YouTube encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go live. In Live Control Room, prepare the stream and open the encoder settings that provide the server and stream-key information. YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for using an external encoder; interface labels can change, so follow the current controls shown in Live Control Room (YouTube Help).
  2. Keep the stream key private. Treat the key like a password: enter it only in your encoder, do not put it in the scene or show it on screen, and do not share it. If it is exposed, use YouTube’s controls to replace or reset it before relying on it again.
  3. Create a scene in OBS. In the Scenes panel, add a scene for the broadcast. A scene is the composition; its sources are the individual video, image, text, and audio inputs. OBS’s overview guide documents stream settings, scenes, sources, transforms, audio setup, and testing (OBS Studio Overview Guide).
  4. Add one source per panel. In the Sources panel, add the relevant inputs—for example, a camera source and a game or window capture, or two camera sources. Name sources clearly so you can identify them while adjusting the layout. If a device does not appear, check that it is connected and available to OBS before building around it.
  5. Position and size each source. Select a source in the preview and drag its bounding box to place and resize it. For two side-by-side panels, size one source to the left portion of the canvas and the other to the right, then align their edges. For gameplay plus presenter, make the game or display the main panel and place the camera in a smaller corner panel. These are applications of OBS’s documented source controls, not a guarantee that every device will frame identically.
  6. Crop where needed and set the layer order. To crop a source in OBS, hold Alt while dragging one of its edges. Cropping trims the visible area; it is different from resizing the entire source. Sources higher in the list can cover sources lower in the list, so order them according to what should appear on top. For picture-in-picture, the camera should generally be above the main panel in the source list.
  7. Set canvas, output, frame rate, and audio deliberately. Choose a base canvas resolution that suits the composition, then set an output resolution and frame rate your computer and upload connection can sustain. Select the intended microphone and other audio devices, and check their levels. OBS notes that 60 fps is more demanding than 30 fps; test system resources rather than assuming a higher frame rate will work well. Do not use a one-size-fits-all bitrate: select settings appropriate to the encoder, available upload capacity, and YouTube’s current recommendations. OBS documents these settings and recommends testing before a broadcast (OBS Studio Overview Guide).
  8. Enter the YouTube connection details in OBS. Configure the YouTube service or server and enter the stream key from Live Control Room in the stream settings. Confirm you selected the intended scene and that the key corresponds to the event you prepared.
  9. Start the encoder feed and check YouTube’s preview. Verify in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving the expected image and sound. Check each panel’s framing, confirm the right audio is audible, and look for performance problems before starting the public broadcast. Use a private or unlisted test when appropriate; set the audience and visibility deliberately for the actual event.
  10. Start and monitor the broadcast. Once the preview is right, start the YouTube broadcast using the current Live Control Room controls. During the program, watch for missing sources, audio imbalance, dropped frames, and chat activity. When finished, end the broadcast through the current Live Control Room workflow.

Make a two-camera or gameplay-and-presenter layout

Two cameras side by side

Add each camera as a separate source in the same OBS scene. Resize and align them so they occupy their intended halves of the canvas, then check that neither feed is hidden by the other in the source order. Confirm that both faces are framed well at the final output size. If both cameras carry audio, decide which audio should be heard—or whether both are needed—and listen to the test rather than relying on the meters alone.

Gameplay with a presenter webcam

Add the game or application capture as the main source and the camera as a smaller source above it in the layer order. Position the smaller panel where it does not cover essential game information, subtitles, or controls. If the captured image includes unused margins, crop those edges with the OBS crop control before finalizing the layout.

Split-screen composition versus YouTube dual-format live

YouTube also describes simultaneous horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) live formats. By default, the vertical presentation is a center crop of the horizontal feed. YouTube lists editing-canvas choices including center crop, fit to phone width, and stacked. For editing both formats through a third-party encoder, YouTube says to select Encoder and use RTMP(S), choose the second stream key for vertical, and send each format to its matching key. The vertical format cannot be added after the stream has started. YouTube says the formats share one live URL and chat; viewers in the Shorts feed see vertical, while other viewers see horizontal (YouTube Help).

These controls address how the broadcast is presented to different viewers, not how multiple sources are arranged inside an OBS scene. A horizontal layout with two side-by-side panels may crop poorly into a vertical center crop. If you use both formats, preview the vertical composition and adjust it before going live; do not assume the horizontal framing will work unchanged.

Troubleshoot common split-screen problems

  • A panel is missing or covered: Check that its source is visible and enabled, then inspect the source order. A source higher in the list can cover one below it.
  • A source is the wrong size or shape: Select it in the OBS preview and adjust its bounding box. Use the crop control only to trim unwanted edges; check that cropping has not cut off faces, text, or important gameplay details.
  • YouTube does not show the OBS picture: Confirm that OBS is sending to the intended YouTube service or server and that the stream key matches the event in Live Control Room. Recheck the incoming preview before starting the public broadcast.
  • There is no sound, or the wrong sound is heard: Confirm the intended audio devices are selected in OBS and check their levels during a test. A visible video source does not guarantee its associated audio is enabled or that it is the audio you want.
  • The stream stutters or drops frames: Check OBS’s performance and connection indicators, then reduce demanding output settings if the computer or upload connection cannot sustain them. In particular, 60 fps requires more resources than 30 fps; test the chosen settings rather than assuming they will work.
  • The vertical version cuts off important content: Rework and preview the vertical presentation before starting. YouTube’s vertical feed may use a center crop by default, and the vertical format cannot be added after the stream has begun.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than stream a live camera or build a live OBS scene, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo streams uploaded video at the quality provided, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and does not broadcast from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
