Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For inbound contribution to a supported Wowza Streaming Engine installation, use SRT listener mode: configure the listener on Wowza, then connect your SRT source as a caller using the listener’s UDP address and port, a publish stream ID, and matching encryption settings. For outbound delivery through an SRT Stream Target, the roles reverse: Wowza acts as the caller.
Check version support and choose the right SRT workflow
Wowza’s current SRT ingest guide says Streaming Engine 4.7.3 and later supports ingesting SRT version 1.5.0 or later with MPEG-TS packaging. Confirm the installed Engine and SRT versions before configuring a source. Wowza also notes that new Windows installations of Engine 4.8.0 or later may need the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for certain SRT workflows. See Wowza’s SRT ingest guide for version-specific instructions.
| Workflow | Who calls? | Configuration trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Listener mode for inbound ingest | The source is the caller; Wowza listens. | Configure Server.xml, VHost.xml, and Application.xml once. Multiple incoming connections can use the configured SRT port; no separate .stream file is needed for every source. |
| Legacy MediaCaster for inbound ingest | Follow the MediaCaster connection workflow for the source. | Requires a .stream file and a separate UDP port for each SRT stream; it can suit more complex cases such as multiple alternative tracks. |
| SRT Stream Target for outbound delivery | Wowza is the caller; the destination listens. | Configure a target under Generic Target Destinations in a Live application, including the source stream and destination details. |
Wowza recommends listener mode for simpler ingest configuration and more efficient network setup. The sections below cover inbound listener mode first, then outbound targets.
Set up inbound SRT listener mode
- Create the application. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, create or select a Live application for the incoming contribution. Identify its application instance and the stream name you intend to publish.
- Configure the listener. Apply Wowza’s listener configuration in Server.xml, VHost.xml, and Application.xml, following the current guide for your installed version. The listener port is configured in VHost.xml. Allow the required UDP traffic through the host firewall and any network firewall or security group for that port.
- Set the source as caller. In the encoder or software publisher, enter the public IP address or hostname of the Wowza listener and its configured port. The source initiates the SRT connection; do not configure both endpoints as callers.
- Provide the publish stream ID. Set the stream ID to publish into the intended application, instance, and stream path. The default application instance may be used where applicable. A general Wowza caller URI has this form:
srt://<listener-public-address>:<listener-port>?passphrase=<secret>&pbkeylen=32&mode=caller&streamid=#!::m=publish,r=<application>/<instance>/<stream>Replace every placeholder with the actual endpoint and path. The host, configured listener port, stream name, application, and stream ID are required elements in Wowza’s example. Do not publish a real secret in documentation, screenshots, or logs.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Match encryption if enabled. If using a global passphrase, the source must use the same value configured in Wowza. With per-user encryption, use the server’s configured user identity and credentials. Wowza’s example uses
pbkeylen=32; its documentation lists 0/default, 16, 24, and 32 byte values. Passphrase and key length are optional when encryption is not used. Confirm both endpoints’ settings rather than assuming defaults match. - Verify the feed. In Wowza Streaming Engine Manager, open the application’s Incoming Streams view and confirm the stream is active. Then test playback through the output protocol configured for that application.
Set up outbound delivery with an SRT Stream Target
- Open a Live application. Select or create the application that contains the stream to send.
- Add the target. Under Generic Target Destinations, add an SRT Stream Target. Select the source stream and enter the destination host and port, along with transport options required by the receiving endpoint.
- Configure latency and payload. For Engine 4.8.5 and later, Wowza’s target documentation specifies a latency setting in milliseconds, with a 120 ms minimum and a 400 ms default when none is specified. Wowza recommends 2.5 times the network round-trip time (RTT); if peers specify different values, the higher value applies to both. For MPEG-TS, use Wowza’s default 1500 payload size. Check the installed-version instructions at Wowza’s SRT Stream Target guide.
- Check the destination role. In this outbound workflow Wowza is the SRT caller, so the remote endpoint must be prepared to accept the connection as a listener. Confirm its address, port, and transport expectations before starting the target.
Choose latency for the real network path
The SRT latency value is not glass-to-glass latency. SRT uses timestamp-based delivery buffering to schedule packets regularly and leave time to request retransmission of lost packets. Its latency describes transport buffering between SRT peers; capture, encoding, multiplexing, other network and application processing, decoding, and display add delay elsewhere in the chain. The receiver’s buffering delay is governed by the greater of its local receive-latency and the peer’s latency request, and the buffer must accommodate the stream bitrate and chosen delay. The SRT project describes the protocol’s UDP transport, AES encryption for media payloads, and ARQ retransmission approach in its SRT overview and SRT documentation.
- Start with a documented baseline. For an outbound Wowza target, begin with Wowza’s default or RTT-based recommendation rather than an arbitrary ultra-low value. For inbound ingest, use the settings supported by the source and Wowza workflow; do not assume the outbound target’s documented default applies to every setup.
- Measure the route. Observe RTT, packet loss, and jitter between the actual source and server. A value suitable for one route or network condition may not suit another.
- Adjust in controlled steps. Lower latency incrementally only while checking for late-packet drops, visible artifacts, and reconnects. Raise it if jitter or retransmission recovery causes interruptions. The buffer needs enough time for missing packets to arrive before their delivery deadlines.
- Test under realistic load. Check the actual network path and expected operating conditions. Report a latency figure only when it has been measured, and state exactly what it measures; a configured SRT buffer is not a measured end-to-end result.
- Inspect the whole chain. If viewers still see substantial delay, check encoder frame buffering or lookahead, any transcoding, playback protocol and player buffer, decoding, and display delay in addition to SRT settings.
Troubleshoot connection and playback problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No SRT connection | Caller/listener roles, address, port, or network access do not agree. | Confirm the source calls the Wowza listener for ingest, or Wowza calls the destination for an outbound target. Verify the public address, configured SRT UDP port, and host/network firewall or security-group rules. |
| Connected, but no stream appears | Incorrect stream ID or application path, or unexpected media packaging. | Check stream ID syntax and the application, instance, and stream path. Confirm the source is sending MPEG-TS packaged SRT as expected by the Wowza ingest workflow. |
| Encryption handshake fails | Passphrase, key length, or credential mode differs between endpoints. | Compare both sides’ passphrase and key length; establish whether the application uses a global passphrase or per-user credentials. Keep secrets out of published material and logs. |
| Stutter, artifacts, or late drops | Insufficient recovery time for RTT, jitter, or loss on the route. | Measure RTT, jitter, and loss; increase available SRT latency buffering in controlled steps and check sender and receiver buffer behavior. There is no single setting established for every internet path. |
| High end-to-end delay despite a low SRT setting | Delay exists elsewhere in the production and playback chain. | Inspect encoder buffering or lookahead, transcoding, playback protocol, player buffering, decoding, and display delay. |
| Outbound target will not connect | Wowza or the destination is not expecting the configured connection role or transport settings. | Confirm Wowza is the caller and that destination host, port, latency, payload expectations, and the remote listener configuration agree. |
Or let it run in the cloud
