In OBS Studio, add filters to the microphone source you actually use, then tune each filter by listening to your voice in your room. Start with only the processing needed: suppression for mild steady noise, a gate or expander for noise between phrases, compression for loud peaks, and a limiter to cap the final output. There is no universal preset; the right settings depend on your microphone, room, speaking distance, and voice level.

Before adding filters: improve the sound at the microphone

Filters can help with specific problems, but they cannot fully make up for loud environmental noise or poor microphone placement. Choose the quietest practical location and check for steady sounds such as fans, appliances, traffic, and wind. YouTube notes that using a microphone can improve audio quality. An external USB microphone is one option if you do not have a suitable mic; no particular model is required for this OBS workflow.

Speak at a consistent distance from the microphone and listen to the unprocessed input first. Headphones can help you hear noise and artifacts while monitoring, but they are optional.

How do I set up mic filters in OBS for YouTube?

  1. Find the microphone input. In OBS Studio, speak and check which microphone/auxiliary channel shows activity in the Audio Mixer. If the wrong input is selected, filters on the intended microphone will not affect the sound being broadcast.
  2. Open the source’s filter controls. In the Audio Mixer, open the microphone/auxiliary channel’s gear menu and choose Filters. Alternatively, right-click the relevant microphone source in the Sources list and choose Filters. OBS supports filters attached to sources, audio devices, or scenes; make sure you are editing the source that carries your microphone.
  3. Add a filter only for an audible problem. In the Filters window, use the audio filter add control and select the needed filter. OBS documents Noise Suppression, Noise Gate, Expander, Compressor, Gain, and Limiter. Names and availability may differ in other encoders; the steps here are for OBS Studio.
  4. Listen after each change. Speak normally and then pause, and listen for both the problem you intended to solve and new artifacts. Adjust one filter at a time rather than stacking several aggressive effects.

Which OBS microphone filter should I use?

Filter Best suited to What to listen for
Noise Suppression Mild, steady background or white noise. Too much suppression can make speech sound robotic, watery, muffled, or otherwise damaged. A loud room may need its noise source reduced rather than more processing.
Noise Gate Silencing the microphone while you are not speaking. Abrupt openings and closings, or the start and end of words being cut off.
Expander Reducing quieter audio more gradually, including noise between phrases. Speech may be cut off if the threshold is too high; an unsuitable ratio or timing can also make level changes noticeable.
Compressor Reducing loud peaks so they are less pronounced. Audible pumping or a voice that loses natural dynamics if compression is too heavy.
Limiter Capping the final output so peaks do not exceed its threshold. Over-reliance can make the result sound unnatural; it does not fix noisy recording conditions.
Gain Changing signal level when the microphone input is too quiet or too loud. Increasing gain can also make background noise more audible; avoid treating gain as a substitute for correcting microphone placement or input level.

How do I stop background noise on a live stream?

Use suppression for modest, steady noise

OBS describes Noise Suppression as a way to remove mild background noise or white noise. Try it when you hear a consistent, relatively quiet fan or room sound. OBS offers RNNoise and Speex: RNNoise is higher quality but uses more CPU, while Speex is adjustable. Stronger suppression can distort the voice, so compare the result with the filter disabled and keep the least aggressive setting that addresses the noise.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

OBS cautions that suppression is generally not effective against large amounts of background noise in a loud room. If speech becomes damaged before the noise is acceptably reduced, address the room or microphone placement instead of stacking more suppression, a hard gate, and heavy compression.

Choose gate or expander for pauses

A gate cuts or silences audio below its threshold, which can make pauses quieter but may sound abrupt. An expander reduces quieter signals more gradually and has an adjustable ratio, so its opening and closing can sound smoother. Use one only if noise between phrases is a real distraction.

For a gate, OBS says the close threshold should be above the noise floor and the open threshold slightly below the voice level. In practice, test both speaking and silence: the gate should remain closed over the background noise but open reliably before the first syllable.

For an expander, OBS’s documentation suggests a 4:1 ratio as a possible balance, an attack of 5–10 ms, and a release of 50–120 ms. These are starting points, not a universal preset. Do not raise the threshold so far that it cuts off quiet words or the beginnings of speech.

How do I stop my microphone from clipping?

First, check that the input is not already clipping before filters are applied. A compressor can reduce loud peaks, and OBS recommends placing it near the beginning of the filter chain. A limiter caps output peaks and belongs last in OBS’s recommended chain placement. Listen to loud phrases as well as ordinary speech: check for clipped syllables, sudden level changes, and pumping, and keep the voice natural.

No universal YouTube microphone-filter loudness target is established here. Judge the result by clean, intelligible speech and by checking the actual broadcast path rather than chasing an unsupported number.

Test the complete YouTube broadcast path before going public

  1. Record locally or start an unlisted live stream. YouTube recommends testing audio, video, and equipment with an unlisted live stream.
  2. Use realistic speech. Include the volume, movement, and speaking pattern you expect during the real stream, including quiet phrases and louder moments.
  3. Monitor the preview and stream health. Check that the intended microphone is present, that pauses behave as expected, and that the start and end of words are not cut off.
  4. Change one setting at a time. If the sound is poor, disable or ease the most recent change and compare again. Retest after any meaningful filter adjustment.

Troubleshooting common filter problems

Symptom Likely cause What to try
Noise remains audible during speech The room noise is too loud, or suppression is not suited to it. Reduce the noise source or improve mic placement. Use suppression only for mild steady noise, and avoid making it so strong that it damages speech.
Voice sounds robotic, watery, or muffled Noise suppression is too aggressive. Reduce its strength or disable it and compare. Treat the room noise at its source if suppression harms the voice.
First syllables or quiet words disappear A gate or expander threshold is too high, or its timing does not suit the voice. Lower the threshold and test quiet speech, phrase beginnings, and endings. For a gate, confirm the open threshold sits slightly below the voice level.
Noise cuts off abruptly between phrases A gate is closing too noticeably. Ease the gate settings or try an expander for a more gradual reduction.
Voice level pumps or sounds unnaturally even Compression is too heavy or multiple filters are doing too much. Reduce compression and remove processing that is not solving a clear problem. Keep a limiter last to cap output peaks.
Filters seem to do nothing They may be attached to the wrong source or audio device. Speak and identify the active microphone/auxiliary channel, then open Filters from that channel or the matching source.
