To capture the last few minutes in OBS Studio, enable Replay Buffer in Settings → Output, choose a duration, assign a Save Replay Buffer hotkey under Settings → Hotkeys, and start the buffer before the moment you want to keep. When the moment has passed, press the save hotkey. Starting the buffer does not save a clip by itself.

Set up OBS Replay Buffer

  1. Choose where clips will go. In OBS, open Settings → Output and set the recording path to a folder you can find later. The available controls can vary with OBS version and output mode.
  2. Enable the buffer. In Settings → Output, enable Replay Buffer. Set its duration to how much footage you want to be able to recover before pressing Save Replay. Start with a practical, shorter duration; increase it only after checking that OBS remains stable on your computer.
  3. Assign hotkeys. Open Settings → Hotkeys. Set a key for Start Replay Buffer and a separate key for Save Replay Buffer. Pick keys you can reach reliably that do not conflict with game controls or other shortcuts.
  4. Start capturing before the action. Start the replay buffer using its hotkey or the corresponding OBS control. The buffer must already be running to retain footage from before the event.
  5. Save after the moment. Press the Save Replay Buffer hotkey. OBS writes the buffered segment as a clip to the configured recording location.
  6. Test the result. Start the buffer, wait briefly, save a replay, then find and play the file. Check that both video and audio are present and that the clip contains the expected portion before relying on it for an important recording.

Choose duration, quality, and file format carefully

Duration and memory use

Replay Buffer retains recent footage in system memory while active. A longer duration or more demanding output settings can increase resource use. There is no universal duration that fits every computer: test the settings you plan to use, and reduce the duration or output quality if the buffer will not start or OBS becomes unstable.

OBS Studio 29 release notes described a version-specific change: “The Replay Buffer’s memory limit is now set to 75% of installed system RAM rather than fixed to 8GB.” That is a change documented for OBS Studio 29 by the OBS Project in 2023, not a recommended allocation or a guarantee about every version. Check the behavior of the OBS version installed on your computer. OBS Studio 29 release notes.

Recording quality and encoder

The selected recording quality and encoder affect resource use. Available encoder options depend on your computer, so use the options shown in your OBS installation and test the resulting clip. If the system struggles, lower the output demands or shorten the buffer rather than assuming a specific encoder is available.

Recording path and format

Set a known recording path in Output settings and verify the actual Replay Buffer file format produced by your OBS version and configuration. OBS recommends MKV for recordings because a recording is less likely to be corrupted if it does not stop gracefully; that guidance does not mean every Replay Buffer setup necessarily produces MKV. Check the saved file in the player or editor you intend to use.

Why an OBS replay may not save

  • No clip appears: Confirm that the buffer was started before the event, then press the Save Replay Buffer action rather than only starting or stopping the buffer.
  • The wrong or no hotkey responds: Reopen Settings → Hotkeys and verify the assigned Save Replay Buffer key. Check for a conflict with another shortcut.
  • You cannot find the clip: Check the recording path under Settings → Output, then save a short test replay and locate the resulting file.
  • The buffer will not start or OBS becomes unstable: Shorten the replay duration or lower output demands, then test again. Memory and encoder use depend on the computer and settings.
  • The clip has missing or unexpected audio/video: Play a test file before a session where the replay matters. Confirm the intended sources and audio are included in the output configuration, and check the saved file in another suitable player if needed.

Start Replay Buffer automatically when OBS launches

OBS documents the --startreplaybuffer launch parameter for starting the buffer when OBS opens. This automates buffer startup; it does not replace the Save Replay Buffer action needed to write a clip.
