Choose a capture mode supported by both the source signal and your card, and check game audio separately from your microphone. Exact ports and settings depend on the Elgato model, source device, computer, and Streamlabs version.
Before you connect anything
Identify your Elgato model, the device you want to capture (such as a console, camera, or second computer), your computer’s operating system, and the resolution and frame rate you want to use. Check the model’s current setup guide for its ports, cable requirements, supported capture modes, and USB connection requirements; settings for one card should not be assumed to apply to another.
For a published baseline specific to the HD60 X, Elgato’s system requirements page lists Windows 10 64-bit, a 6th-generation Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 7 or better, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10xx or better, 4 GB of RAM, USB 3.0, and internet. Its Mac baseline lists macOS 11 Big Sur or later, an M1 or 4th-generation quad-core Intel i5 or comparable processor, 4 GB of RAM, USB 3.x, and internet. These are the page’s HD60 X requirements, updated October 3, 2023—not universal or necessarily current requirements for every card or third-party application. Elgato notes that third-party software such as Streamlabs OBS has different requirements from its own utility. See Elgato’s HD60 X system requirements.
Connect the capture card and source
Follow your model’s port and cable instructions
For the specific Xbox Series X|S and Elgato 4K X setup, Elgato’s wiring is: console HDMI output to the card’s HDMI In, card HDMI Out to a display if you want passthrough, and the card’s USB-C output to the computer. That setup uses two HDMI cables, one supplied with the card, and specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2; USB 3.2 Gen 1 works at reduced capture resolution. These details apply to that 4K X example, not every Elgato card. Check Elgato’s 4K X Xbox setup diagram and notes.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When using passthrough, the display connects to the card’s HDMI Out; Streamlabs receives the capture feed over USB. A display is not required for every setup. Use the port and cable types specified for your particular model, and connect the card directly to a suitable computer port when possible.
Check protected output and analog audio limitations
Elgato says of the 4K X Xbox setup: “Signals protected by HDCP can’t be used.” HDCP-protected sources cannot be captured with that setup. If you see a black image or an error, check whether the source is protected and consult the guide for your card.

On the 4K X, Analog Audio In is a line-in, not a microphone input. Do not plug a microphone into it expecting the card to treat it as a mic. Follow your model’s instructions for any analog audio equipment.
Add the Elgato card to a Streamlabs scene
- Open or create a scene. In Streamlabs Desktop, select an existing scene or create one for the console, camera, or other source you are capturing.
- Add a capture source. In the scene’s Sources area, add a Video Capture Device source. Give it a recognizable name, such as “Elgato capture.”
- Select the connected card. In the source properties, choose the Elgato device from the device list. If it is missing, see the troubleshooting section below.
- Choose a supported mode. Select a resolution and frame rate available for the incoming signal and the capture card. Do not set the capture software to a mode higher than the signal the card is receiving. If the desired mode is not listed, check the source output settings and the model’s supported-mode documentation.
- Confirm the image in the preview. Check that the picture is visible and correctly framed in the scene before you stream or record.
Elgato’s 4K X setup guide lists Streamlabs Desktop among the software options. Elgato’s detailed HD60 S+ source workflow is for OBS Studio; the guide says many steps are the same for Streamlabs OBS, but it is marked legacy/EOL. Streamlabs Desktop’s labels can change between releases, so treat that older guide as orientation, not a guarantee of current menu wording. Configure game audio and verify the mixer
Video and game audio do not always arrive in Streamlabs through the same source. First check whether audio is already coming through the capture source. If it is not, add or select the capture card as an audio input in Streamlabs and watch its meter in the mixer while the source plays sound. Keep your commentary microphone on its own source so you can confirm and adjust game audio and voice independently.
- HDMI audio: Use HDMI as the card’s audio path when game sound is carried over HDMI.
- Analog audio: Select the analog path only when your hardware and wiring send sound through the card’s analog input. For the 4K X, Analog Audio In is line-level, not a microphone port.
- Audio format: Elgato says its capture devices support stereo 2.0 PCM, but not bitstream audio such as Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, or Dolby Atmos. If the game device is set to a surround or bitstream format, change its output to stereo PCM and check the meter again.
- macOS: For supported devices, Elgato’s sound troubleshooting guide describes adding a separate Audio Input Capture source. Use the instructions for your card and current Streamlabs build.
If the meter moves but you cannot hear the game in your monitoring headphones, distinguish a monitoring or output-routing issue from a capture issue: the meter confirms that audio is reaching the software, while monitoring determines where you hear it. Elgato’s audio guide covers HDMI versus analog input and other model-specific checks. Elgato: troubleshooting no game sound from a capture device.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
Streamlabs does not list the Elgato device
- Check that the card is connected to the computer using the port and USB connection required by that model.
- Close other capture applications that may be using the card. If you opened Elgato’s own utility to test it, close that utility before returning to Streamlabs.
- In Streamlabs, deactivate and reactivate the source. If the device still does not appear, remove the source and create it again, then select the card from the device list.
- If the problem continues, reconnect the card and check the manufacturer’s current model-specific setup instructions.
Elgato documents the software-conflict and source-reset steps in its legacy HD60 S+ OBS guide; exact controls may differ in current Streamlabs Desktop.
The preview is black or says no signal
- Verify the source device is powered on and its HDMI output is connected to the card’s HDMI In, not HDMI Out.
- Check that the card is selected as the Video Capture Device and that the incoming resolution and frame rate are supported.
- For the 4K X Xbox setup, check for an HDCP-protected signal, which Elgato says cannot be used.
- Close other software that may have claimed the card, then reactivate or recreate the Streamlabs source.
Streamlabs reports an incompatible resolution
Set the capture mode to the resolution of the signal actually arriving at the card, or choose a lower supported mode. Elgato gives 1080p input paired with a 4K software setting as an example of a mismatch. That resolution guide is marked legacy/EOL, so confirm the fix against your card’s current documentation. The picture is too small, stretched, or cropped
Reset the source transform or fit the source to the scene. Preserve the source’s aspect ratio where possible: stretching it to fill the scene can distort faces, text, and gameplay. If the capture itself is the wrong size, check the source’s output mode and the card’s selected mode before changing the scene layout.
Game audio is missing
- Confirm that the capture card is selected as the audio input if Streamlabs is not receiving audio automatically.
- Choose HDMI or analog input to match how sound is connected.
- Set the source device’s audio output to stereo 2.0 PCM rather than bitstream or an unsupported surround format.
- Check the capture source’s mixer meter separately from the microphone meter.
Video stutters or drops frames
Check that the card is connected to a USB port meeting the model’s requirement. USB generation and available bandwidth can affect capture; for example, Elgato specifies USB 3.2 Gen 2 for the documented 4K X Xbox setup and says Gen 1 works at reduced capture resolution. The legacy HD60 S+ guide also suggests trying another USB 3.0 port for choppy video. Do not assume that particular port recommendation applies to every model. 4K X connection guidance · legacy HD60 S+ troubleshooting.
Keep a YouTube channel live without leaving your capture setup running
For live gameplay or camera capture, the Elgato-and-Streamlabs workflow above sends a live source from your computer. If instead you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded recordings while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed or stream to platforms other than YouTube.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, nothing has to stay running at home: the cloud keeps the YouTube stream going. Uploaded videos stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
