You can send a podcast to YouTube Live by configuring a broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, then running FFmpeg in a Docker container to read your chosen media input and transmit it using YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingestion path. Docker runs the process and can restart an exited container; it does not guarantee that the broadcast is healthy or that a failed connection will recover. The examples below assume a prerecorded audio file paired with a static image, not a live microphone or camera. Adapt the input and encoding to your actual podcast format.
Understand the three parts of the setup
- YouTube supplies the broadcast destination and encoder configuration: an ingestion URL and a private stream key. A broadcast represents the event; the stream resource carries the encoder transmission configuration, as Google explains in Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
- FFmpeg reads the media input, encodes it or passes through compatible streams, muxes the result, and sends it to YouTube.
- Docker runs FFmpeg in a container. Its restart policy can restart a process after the container exits, but cannot determine by itself whether YouTube is receiving usable audio and video.
This guide uses RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP, which YouTube recommends for encoder ingestion. YouTube also supports HLS ingestion, but it has distinct requirements and higher segment-based latency; it is not a setting to mix into an RTMPS command.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, open Go live to enter Live Control Room, then create or select the broadcast and its stream configuration. The exact available controls can depend on your account and current YouTube interface.
- Choose the RTMPS encoder path and note the server/ingestion URL and stream key shown for that setup. Use the values YouTube provides rather than guessing or reusing a URL from another protocol.
- Keep the stream key secret. Do not put the real key in an article, shell history, public repository, shared Compose file, or log. Supply it privately at runtime using a secrets mechanism appropriate to the Docker deployment you choose; Docker deployment methods differ, so verify the current method in the documentation for your environment.
- Leave Live Control Room available for the test so you can check whether YouTube receives the stream and review its stream-health messages before starting the public broadcast.
YouTube’s RTMPS guidance is at Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS. Its general encoder requirements and monitoring advice are in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Choose the input and encoding before writing the command
For a prerecorded podcast file
Decide whether the video is an existing video file, a static image paired with audio, or a sequence of visuals. The command structure changes with the input. The example below assumes one audio file and one still image; it is a starting point to adapt and validate, not a tested YouTube recipe. Confirm option behavior against the FFmpeg build and input formats on your system.

For a live microphone or camera
Do not substitute a device name into the prerecorded-file example and expect it to work. Capture-device names, permissions, audio routing, and input options are operating-system and device specific. First verify that FFmpeg can read the live input locally, then build the output settings around that input and the selected YouTube protocol.
For pass-through versus encoding
Pass through audio or video only when the existing stream is compatible with the chosen output protocol and YouTube’s current requirements. Otherwise, encode it. Avoid copying every codec option into a command: codecs, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, keyframe interval, and muxer depend on the actual source and protocol.
YouTube’s current Help guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video codecs, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and supports up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. For audio it lists AAC or MP3 in its general encoder guidance; advanced recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps for stereo, or 48 kHz and 384 Kbps for 5.1 audio. Treat these as YouTube guidance, not a universal preset for every source or FFmpeg build.

Run FFmpeg in Docker
The command below illustrates the moving parts only. It assumes an image containing FFmpeg, a local audio file named podcast.mp3, a still image named cover.jpg, and an RTMPS output URL with a placeholder key. Replace the image name, input paths, ingestion URL, and encoding options with values verified for your deployment. The stream key placeholder is not a usable credential.
docker run --rm
--name podcast-stream
-v "$PWD/media:/media:ro"
YOUR_FFMPEG_IMAGE
-loop 1 -framerate 30 -i /media/cover.jpg
-re -i /media/podcast.mp3
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
-r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-b:v YOUR_VIDEO_BITRATE -maxrate YOUR_VIDEO_BITRATE -bufsize YOUR_BUFFER_SIZE
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY"
This illustrative command encodes the still image as H.264 video and the audio as AAC; the video bitrate, buffer size, and actual RTMPS URL must be selected for your stream. At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds, but verify the resulting output and keyframe behavior rather than assuming a command alone proves compliance. If the source is already compatible, a pass-through workflow may be possible, but it requires suitable input and muxing options not established by this example.
FFmpeg documents RTMP-family protocols and an RTMP FIFO muxer example that can attempt recovery after temporary network failures. That example is general RTMP documentation, not a complete or validated YouTube/Docker configuration. See FFmpeg Protocols Documentation and FFmpeg Documentation before adding protocol-specific options.

Choose a Docker restart policy deliberately
For a long-running container, Docker supports unless-stopped, always, and on-failure[:max-retries]. They differ in how they respond to exit status, daemon restarts, and a manual stop. Docker notes that restart policy behavior takes effect after a container has been up successfully for at least 10 seconds. Read Docker’s automatic-start documentation and choose based on how you want intentional stops and host restarts handled.
on-failureis exit-code driven; Docker documents that it does not restart a container simply because the daemon restarts.- A manually stopped container is not automatically restarted until the daemon or container is manually restarted.
- A restart policy reacts to container process exits. It does not test audio, video, YouTube ingestion status, or whether a broadcast is actually live.
For example, adding --restart unless-stopped to a Docker run command requests that policy, but do so only after deciding whether it matches your operational needs. Restart behavior also cannot recover a process that remains running while its input has stalled or its output is unusable.

- Run the container with a test source and inspect its output. Confirm FFmpeg opens both inputs and does not immediately exit with a file, codec, or connection error.
- Use an upload-speed test to establish a reliable bitrate for your network. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream; a static cover-image podcast still needs a stable connection for its audio and encoded video output.
- Check Live Control Room for incoming video and audio, stream-health status, and messages. Confirm the result on YouTube before treating the setup as ready for an audience.
- If the container exits, inspect its logs and exit status, correct the underlying issue, then verify that the restart policy behaved as intended.
- Keep monitoring during the event. A running container is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
When HLS is the right alternative
Use HLS only when your use case needs that ingestion path and you can meet its separate setup and media constraints. YouTube requires an HLS stream key and HTTPS ingestion URL. Its Help instructions specify TS segments from 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte ranges, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption beyond HTTPS. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends video in segments.

These are protocol-specific details, so follow the current requirements for the selected path rather than combining HLS settings with RTMPS settings. FFmpeg exits immediately
Check the container logs for an invalid image, missing mounted file, incorrect input path, unsupported codec, or malformed output URL. Confirm the media files are present inside the container at the paths used by the command.
YouTube does not show an incoming stream
Check that you selected the intended broadcast and protocol, copied the matching ingestion URL, and supplied the correct private key. Ensure the server can reach the RTMPS endpoint and inspect FFmpeg’s connection errors. Do not expose the key while troubleshooting.

Video or audio is missing or incompatible
Verify that FFmpeg is opening the intended streams and that the selected codecs, audio sample rate, frame rate, keyframe cadence, and muxer match the YouTube guidance for the chosen protocol. A static image plus audio needs an explicit video output; an audio-only input does not automatically create a video stream.
The container restarts but the broadcast remains unhealthy
Restart policies act on exited containers, not on stream quality. Check whether FFmpeg is still running, inspect logs for stalled input or network errors, and verify stream health in Live Control Room. FFmpeg’s documented FIFO recovery is an option to investigate for transient network failures, but it is not a guarantee of recovery.
HLS accepts the connection but delivery is delayed or rejected
Confirm that the HLS stream key and HTTPS URL are selected and that segment format, duration, playlist behavior, HTTP methods, and encryption follow YouTube’s HLS instructions. Do not troubleshoot it using RTMPS assumptions.
