The VM can keep the encoder running without your home computer, but it also creates ongoing cloud costs and requires you to manage the software and recovery.
Before you begin
- YouTube access: The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
- Google Cloud project: Billing must be enabled before you create a Compute Engine VM. Google’s Linux VM guide uses Ubuntu 24.04 LTS as an example image; that image is an example, not a YouTube requirement.
- Source video: Use a video you have the rights to stream. Make it accessible to the VM, for example by storing it on the VM or using a cloud storage method you configure. The setup does not require an external drive.
- Encoder: You need software on the VM that can send the video feed to YouTube over RTMPS and repeat the media. This guide covers the connection and YouTube settings, but does not give a copy-and-paste FFmpeg loop command: exact loop syntax and reconnect behavior depend on the FFmpeg build and were not established here.
1. Confirm the channel can stream live
Check live-streaming access in YouTube Studio before paying for VM time or configuring an encoder. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If live streaming is unavailable, resolve the issue shown in Studio first; a correctly configured VM cannot bypass a channel restriction.
2. Create a Linux VM in Compute Engine
- In the Google Cloud console, select or create a project and enable billing for it.
- Open the Compute Engine VM instances page and create a Linux instance. Google’s guide demonstrates Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, but the operating system choice should match the encoder you plan to install and maintain.
- Choose a machine type with sufficient CPU, memory, and network capacity for your encoder and the resolution/frame rate you intend to send. No specific VM size is established here; verify capacity with a test stream rather than assuming one configuration fits every video.
- Connect to the VM using the console’s SSH option. Install and configure your chosen encoder according to its current documentation. Keep your media file somewhere the encoder can read reliably.
A VM-originated stream connects outward to YouTube. Google documents that the default VPC rules allow outgoing traffic and block incoming traffic by default; you generally do not need to open an inbound firewall port just to send the stream. Actual egress capacity depends on the VM machine type and network route. See Google Cloud’s networking overview.
3. Create the YouTube Live stream and get its connection details
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live to reach Live Control Room, then create or schedule a stream. You can use private or unlisted visibility for an initial test.
- In the stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not expose it in a public repository, logs, screenshots, or messages.
- Use the RTMPS server URL when available. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; reveal and select the RTMPS URL for an encrypted connection. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and RTMPS guidance.
- Enter the server URL and stream key in your encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Keep the key out of command history and other places that may be retained or shared when possible.
4. Configure the encoder for YouTube
Follow YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance when selecting output. The published guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose bitrate based on the resolution and frame rate you are sending, using YouTube’s live encoder page at setup time rather than relying on a number that may become stale. Match the encoder output to the source where practical; confirm that the VM can encode and sustain the intended output. These are encoder settings, not a guarantee that a particular VM size will handle a particular workload.
5. Set up the repeat and test the stream
Configure your encoder to play the authorized source repeatedly, then start its outgoing feed and check the preview in Live Control Room before making the stream public. Because FFmpeg loop flags and reconnect behavior were not verified for a selected build, consult the current documentation for the encoder you choose and test its repeat behavior end to end. Do not assume that a process restart automatically resumes at the right point or that a dropped connection will recover without configuration.

- Confirm the Live Control Room preview appears and that both picture and sound are present.
- Check that the video repeats at the intended point and does not stop after one pass.
- Watch the stream health indicator and inspect for disconnects, missing audio, or visual errors during a meaningful test.
- Only switch to the desired public visibility after you have confirmed the feed and rights for the content.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; see its streaming tips. Do not treat an archive as a substitute for maintaining the live stream.
Copyright, reused content, and channel risk
Only loop documentaries or other recordings you own or are licensed to broadcast. A video being available online, credited to its creator, or already streamed by another channel does not establish permission. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions are separate: permission to use footage does not by itself guarantee eligibility for monetization, and repetitive or minimally transformed uploads may raise reused-content concerns under YouTube’s policies. Check the applicable YouTube rules and rights for every video before scheduling a long-running broadcast.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube will not accept the stream | Channel eligibility issue, incorrect server URL/key, or wrong ingest protocol | Confirm live access in Studio, copy the current server URL and key, and use the RTMPS URL if available. |
| No preview appears | Encoder is not sending, destination details are wrong, or the VM cannot reach the ingest endpoint | Check encoder output and the URL/key, verify outbound connectivity, and watch Live Control Room for ingest status. |
| Video appears but has no sound | Audio track missing, muted, or configured with an unsupported codec | Confirm the source has an audio track and encoder output uses AAC or MP3, as listed in YouTube’s guidance. |
| Stream disconnects or does not resume | VM, network route, encoder process, or reconnect configuration problem | Inspect encoder and VM logs, verify the process remains active, and consult the selected encoder’s current reconnect documentation. A specific automatic recovery configuration is not established here. |
| Video stops instead of looping | Repeat behavior was not enabled or the encoder’s loop configuration is incorrect | Check the current documentation for your encoder and validate the repeat in a test stream before relying on it. |
| Unexpected Google Cloud charges | The VM continues running or transferring data | Review VM runtime and network usage in Cloud Billing. Google documents deleting the VM to stop further VM charges when it is no longer needed; an always-on broadcast necessarily needs a running streaming path. |
Cost and operational trade-offs
Compute Engine requires billing, and an always-on VM can incur recurring compute and network charges. The actual cost depends on region, machine type, runtime, and traffic; current prices were not established here, so check Google Cloud Billing before launching a continuous stream. A self-managed VM gives you control over the Linux environment and encoder, but you are responsible for keeping the process, media access, and recovery behavior working.
