To loop a folder of MP4 files on YouTube Live, use OBS Studio with a VLC Video source: add the files to its playlist, enable Loop Playlist, connect OBS to a YouTube stream using its stream URL and key, then preview before going live. For a single MP4, OBS’s built-in Media Source with Loop enabled is simpler. OBS sends the feed; YouTube receives and broadcasts it.
What you need before setting up the stream
- OBS Studio installed on the computer that will send the stream.
- VLC media player installed if you plan to use OBS’s VLC Video playlist source. Match architectures: OBS documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Your MP4 files stored where the computer can access them during the broadcast.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, plus a stable internet upload connection.
If this is your first YouTube live stream, enable it ahead of time: YouTube says initial live-streaming access may take up to 24 hours to become available. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Make a looping playlist in OBS
For a folder of MP4 files
- Open OBS and select an existing scene or create one for the broadcast.
- In Sources, select + and add VLC Video. If the source is missing, install VLC and confirm its architecture matches OBS.
- In the VLC Video properties, add the MP4 files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them played.
- Enable Loop Playlist. OBS documentation says looping is enabled by default for this source, but check the setting. Leave shuffle off if you need a predictable order; shuffle is off by default.
- Confirm the source fits the OBS canvas. Check the preview for framing, and make sure the audio is audible at a sensible level.
The playlist repeats after its last file finishes. This is playback from files available to OBS; it does not make the stream independent of the computer running OBS.
For one MP4 file
- In Sources, select + and add Media Source.
- Choose the local MP4 file in the source properties.
- Enable Loop, then check the OBS preview and audio.
OBS lists MP4 as a supported Media Source format. Its Loop property determines whether the file plays again when playback ends. For several clips, use VLC Video with a playlist rather than adding separate Media Sources if you want one ordered repeating sequence.

Create a YouTube Live stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select one you have already set up. Choose Private or Unlisted for a test; choose Public only when you are ready for viewers. Scheduling is useful if you want a stream page to promote in advance.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if offered, and enter the required stream details. If OBS asks for a server and key separately, paste the YouTube stream URL into the server field and the key into the stream-key field.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement.
- Start streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check that the right playlist is playing and that picture, framing, and sound are correct. For a scheduled broadcast, select Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready.
YouTube describes the stream key as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Consult YouTube’s live-stream settings documentation for the current controls.
Choose encoder settings for your files and connection
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than assuming one bitrate fits every video. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds. OBS and YouTube interface choices can vary by version and stream configuration.

- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the source when practical. Upscaling a low-resolution clip does not add detail, and choosing a higher frame rate than the source does not create genuine motion detail.
- Bitrate: Select the recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate from YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table. For example, YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps. Those are examples for those specific combinations, not universal targets.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where the encoder exposes the option; do not exceed four seconds under YouTube’s guidance.
- Upload capacity: The connection must sustain the chosen bitrate, with room for normal network variation and other traffic. Run a speed test and test with representative video motion and audio before going public.
Encoder recommendations can change. YouTube’s linked table is the reference for the currently published values; a speed-test result alone cannot guarantee a stable broadcast.
Test, monitor, and end the broadcast safely
Before going public
- Use a private or unlisted stream if you need to check the setup without a public audience.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview long enough to confirm the playlist advances and loops as intended.
- Check speech or music levels, the full frame, and whether any clip is silent, corrupted, or unexpectedly out of order.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health status and resolve warnings before sharing the public stream.
During and after the stream
Keep OBS running and monitor both the local preview and Live Control Room while the broadcast is active. For a scheduled stream, end it from Live Control Room with End Stream, then stop sending content from OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance does not promise automatic archiving for longer streams, so keep the original MP4 files independently if you need a copy of a long broadcast.

Copyright, reused content, and monetization
Looping is a technical playback setting, not permission to broadcast the files or a guarantee of monetization. Only stream material you have the rights to use. YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live videos as well as other content: its July 15, 2025 update clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its “inauthentic content” policy, and YouTube says the reused-content policy did not change. A stream can run correctly while still being ineligible for monetization review. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies before relying on revenue from repeated content.
Which looping method fits your setup?
| Approach | Best for | How looping works | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | One local MP4 | Enable Loop | Simplest setup; not a multi-file playlist. |
| OBS VLC Video | Several MP4 files in sequence | Add files to the playlist and enable Loop Playlist | Requires VLC installed with an architecture compatible with OBS. |
| StreamNeo | Creators who want uploaded videos or playlists to keep a YouTube channel live without leaving a computer running | Upload the video or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud loops it | A hosted service rather than a local OBS setup; StreamNeo is for YouTube streams only. |
| Self-managed VPS with FFmpeg | Technically experienced operators comfortable administering a server | A vendor guide describes an FFmpeg playlist/concat approach | Requires server and command-line administration; no specific VPS provider or suitable plan is established here. |
For the OBS method, the computer and its connection must remain active to keep sending the feed. A server-based FFmpeg setup shifts that work to a server but adds administration. A hosted service avoids running the encoder on your own computer, but check its current terms and capabilities before choosing it.

Troubleshooting common problems
VLC Video does not appear in OBS
Install VLC, then make sure its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically documents that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Restart OBS after installation if the source is still missing.
The playlist stops after the last MP4
Open the VLC Video source properties and check Loop Playlist. If clips are being played in an unexpected order, check the playlist order and confirm shuffle is off.
YouTube receives no video or shows no preview
Confirm OBS is streaming, the stream URL and key are the current ones from Live Control Room, and that the stream has been created or selected in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed or replaced, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS.
The preview is unstable or stream health reports a problem
Check that the selected bitrate matches YouTube’s recommendation for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate, then verify that the upload connection can sustain it. Reduce the output demands if the connection cannot reliably carry the selected settings, and test again before going public.
