You can leave the broadcast running all day, but YouTube may not archive streams longer than 12 hours, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable at that length. If a complete replay matters, record locally and plan your sessions accordingly.
Before you start: check eligibility, footage rights, and equipment
Confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days, and be operated by a creator aged 16 or older. Requirements and Studio controls can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance before configuring the broadcast.
Use footage and audio you have permission to stream
You need the necessary rights to both the video and sound in your file. A recording of rain is not automatically rights-free: check the recording’s license and any included music, ambient track, or other audio. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for necessary rights on the provider, including music licensing rights where relevant. YouTube also warns that an active broadcast may be terminated if it receives a copyright strike or matches another copyrighted live broadcast; see copyright issues with live streams.
What you need
- A verified, eligible YouTube channel.
- A rain video file, or several clips if you want a playlist, that you have rights to stream.
- An encoder such as OBS Studio and a computer capable of playing and sending the chosen video.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the encoder’s configured stream bitrate.
A camera and microphone are not central to this workflow because the encoder is sending prerecorded media. A wired network connection is optional, not a YouTube requirement; prioritize a stable connection and enough bandwidth.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up a looping rain video in OBS
Loop one video file
- Open OBS and create a scene for the rain stream.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, add a Media Source and select the rain video file.
- Enable the source’s Loop setting so playback restarts when the file reaches its end.
- Preview the scene, including the end-to-start transition. A clean edit at the file’s endpoints can make a repeat less noticeable; check the actual image and audio rather than assuming the loop will be seamless.
OBS documents looping for its Media Source in Media Sources.
Loop a playlist of clips
If you want several rain scenes to cycle, use OBS’s VLC Video source and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this source type to be available. Check the playlist order, transitions, picture levels, and sound levels in the preview; clips that differ can make the loop more noticeable.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps for the current Studio interface.
- Open the stream settings in Live Control Room and copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding stream fields in OBS. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential that tells the encoder where to send its feed; keep it private. See Manage live stream settings.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming video to appear in YouTube’s preview, then use the Go Live control when it is presented.
- Confirm the public title, description, privacy setting, and other stream details in Studio before the audience arrives.
YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS workflows and also HLS ingestion for encoders that need it. HLS has higher latency and specific transport settings; a basic rain-video loop has no evident reason to use HLS solely for playback repetition. Use the protocol and settings supported by your encoder and the current YouTube stream configuration. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

Choose stream settings and test stability
There is no universal resolution or bitrate that suits every source file, computer, encoder, and internet connection. Preserve a sensible relationship between the media’s properties and the encoder output, and make sure the computer can sustain the selected settings. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate, testing the setup, and monitoring audio and video. Its streaming tips also warn that connection disruptions can break a broadcast.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check the encoder’s configured output bitrate and compare it with the connection’s available upload capacity; leave the recommended headroom rather than using the entire connection.
- Run a private or unlisted test long enough to confirm that the video loops, audio continues, and the connection remains stable.
- Watch the YouTube preview and listen for missing audio, unwanted silence, abrupt loop points, or a frozen image.
- During the live broadcast, monitor the encoder and Live Control Room for interruptions or warnings.
Do not infer a safe bitrate, resolution, or computer specification from another creator’s setup: those depend on your own source, output choices, hardware, and connection.
Plan for archives and viewer rewind
A stream can remain live even when YouTube does not provide a complete replay. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its separate DVR guidance says rewind can be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. These limits are described in YouTube Help’s archive guidance and DVR guidance; the pages do not state a publication year.

If a complete replay matters, make a local recording as YouTube recommends. You can also consider ending and restarting at planned intervals shorter than 12 hours to make archiving more manageable, but that is not a guarantee that every resulting archive will be complete. Check each archive after the session. A continuous broadcast is simpler for viewers who want uninterrupted listening; planned sessions add restart work but give you checkpoints for managing replays.

The preview is blank, frozen, or has no sound
Check that the selected media file can play in the source, that the correct OBS scene is active, and that the source is visible and audio is not muted. Inspect both the OBS preview and YouTube’s incoming preview before going live.
The stream drops or becomes unstable
Check the connection and encoder status, and make sure the stream bitrate leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. A network interruption can break the broadcast; test again on the connection you plan to use and monitor the stream while it runs.
The broadcast is live but the replay is missing or incomplete
Check how long the session ran. YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable beyond that duration. Use a local recording if the complete program is important, and verify any archive after the broadcast.

The broadcast is interrupted over copyright
Review the rights for the specific video and audio file, including any music or sound layered under the rain. YouTube can terminate a live stream following a copyright strike or a match to another copyrighted live broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to keep a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload your rain recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it includes 10 GB of storage per slot, pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
