You can rerun prerecorded gameplay as a YouTube Live broadcast without leaving a gaming PC running: prepare footage you have permission to rebroadcast, create or schedule a YouTube event, connect its stream key to a cloud encoder, choose stable output settings, then preview and monitor the feed. YouTube’s first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned launch.
What a rerun stream consists of
A YouTube broadcast is the watchable event and video page; an encoder stream is the audio-video feed and its delivery settings. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation distinguishes the two, and explains that a stream can be reused across broadcasts at different times. It describes binding one stream to as many as three broadcasts, as well as a continuous 24/7 feed. Your cloud provider’s current scheduling workflow determines how you set up that reuse. A cloud encoder hosts and sends your prepared video feed remotely. You do not need a capture card or a gaming PC online just to rerun footage already recorded. Local equipment may still be useful for recording gameplay or producing a live, interactive show.
Prepare gameplay you can rebroadcast
Check rights before uploading
Use footage you own or have permission to rebroadcast. Owning a gameplay recording does not automatically clear the game’s publisher rights, licensed soundtrack, or other third-party material in it. Check the publisher’s streaming policy and the terms for any music or other content in the recording. YouTube’s technical streaming instructions do not decide whether a particular game recording is cleared.

Make a reliable source file or playlist
Upload a finished recording or assemble a playlist in the cloud encoder, depending on its workflow. Check that the video’s resolution and frame rate match the output you intend to send, and listen for missing, clipped, or unexpectedly loud audio. Test the playlist transition points as well as ordinary gameplay: a quiet menu, a long black frame, or a sudden audio-level change can be an unpleasant surprise in a continuous rerun.
Create the YouTube Live event
- Enable live streaming in advance. Follow YouTube’s current live-streaming setup instructions. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule a stream. In the Live Control Room, create a broadcast or schedule one ahead. Scheduling can make the event appear as upcoming to subscribers. The exact controls can change, so use the current Studio flow for the event.
- Set the audience-facing details. Choose a title, description, thumbnail and visibility: public, private or unlisted. Select the Gaming stream type where offered and appropriate to the event. Confirm the intended audience and event details before sending video.
- Copy the stream URL and key. The cloud encoder needs YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your event. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in the encoder. You can create a custom key for reuse when that suits your setup.
Configure the cloud encoder
Connect YouTube
Paste the stream URL and key into the encoder’s YouTube or custom RTMP destination fields, then save the connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection into and through Google’s servers. If the service offers a YouTube-specific connection flow, follow its current instructions and confirm that the correct event and key are selected.

Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate
YouTube’s current encoder guide recommends RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 frames per second, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds). For audio it lists AAC or MP3. Set these in the cloud encoder rather than assuming YouTube will correct an incompatible outgoing feed. YouTube detects the selected output settings and transcodes the stream for viewer devices.
The following figures are YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations at access on October 3, 2026—not a guarantee that a particular cloud plan or delivery path can sustain them. “Minimum” and “recommended” are video bitrate values.

For other resolutions or details about YouTube’s encoder guidance, consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions. Match output to the source and the provider’s supported limits; a higher resolution or frame rate only helps when the footage and delivery can sustain it.
Test a representative segment
Before scheduling a long rerun, test with gameplay that has comparable movement and audio to the planned stream. Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream health, not just the encoder’s “connected” indicator. A still menu may conceal motion-related quality problems; a muted test may miss audio issues. YouTube recommends testing before going live and choosing settings that fit a reliable upload path.

Preview, go live and monitor
- Start the cloud encoder’s feed and wait for the YouTube preview to appear in the selected event’s Live Control Room.
- Check the preview, audio and stream-health indicators, then use the event’s current Go live control when required. YouTube documents that sequence for the scheduled-stream workflow.
- Confirm the public watch page and visibility from the viewer’s perspective after launch. Keep an eye on the encoder and YouTube stream health, especially at the start and around playlist transitions.
Auto-start and auto-stop settings can alter the launch sequence. Check the event’s current controls rather than assuming that the encoder starting automatically makes the broadcast public. For a stream that is not intended to interact with viewers in real time, stability can matter more than minimal latency. YouTube says lower latency may increase playback buffering; DVR, when enabled, lets viewers pause and rewind.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- You cannot start a first-ever live stream: activation may still be processing. Enable live streaming ahead of the event; YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- YouTube does not receive the feed: confirm the selected broadcast, stream URL and key in the encoder. If the key may have been exposed or changed, reset it in Studio and update the encoder.
- The encoder connects but the preview is absent or unhealthy: check that it is sending the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, with CBR and a keyframe interval no longer than four seconds. Compare against YouTube’s current recommendations and retest with motion and sound.
- The event is not publicly watchable: verify its visibility and follow the Live Control Room’s current preview and Go live flow. A scheduled event or an encoder connection alone does not establish that the event is public.
- A long rerun stops unexpectedly: check the cloud provider’s feed status, playlist and recovery controls, then inspect YouTube stream health. Exact recovery behavior depends on the provider; do not assume all cloud encoders resume in the same way.
- Viewers report buffering: consider whether the chosen output is beyond what the provider can deliver consistently. For reruns without live interaction, avoid prioritizing low latency at the expense of stable playback; YouTube notes lower latency can increase buffering.
Cost and workflow trade-offs
A cloud encoder replaces the need to keep a local machine and its connection running for playout, but its storage, file limits, supported output and plan costs vary by provider and should be checked on that provider’s current plan page. Local software or hardware may suit a workflow that needs live capture or production, but neither a capture card nor a dedicated gaming PC is inherently required to send prepared footage through a cloud encoder. YouTube’s encoder documentation provides the technical settings; the cloud provider determines the service limits.
