To stream prerecorded nighttime crickets and rain as a repeating YouTube Live broadcast, use OBS Studio as an encoder: add the local video to an OBS scene, enable the source’s Loop setting, connect OBS to a stream created in YouTube Studio, then check the preview before going live. Your computer and internet connection must remain on for this do-it-yourself setup, and streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured in YouTube’s archive.
Before you set up the stream
Confirm your channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. For a first livestream, activation can take up to 24 hours, so check access well before your planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Prepare an authorized recording
Keep the cricket-and-rain video on the computer that will run OBS. OBS Media Source supports common audio and video files, including MP4 and WAV. Check that the file contains the image and sound you intend to broadcast. Use recordings you own or have permission to stream; the fact that a recording is available online does not establish that you may rebroadcast it.
Plan for a computer-based broadcast
In this method, OBS sends the video to YouTube while it plays. The computer, OBS, and network equipment need to stay powered and connected while you want the stream to continue. Interruptions to the computer, encoder, connection, or YouTube service can interrupt the broadcast; “continuous” describes your intended playback, not a guarantee of indefinite uptime.

Set up the repeating video in OBS
- Open OBS Studio and create or select a scene for the ambience stream.
- In the scene’s Sources panel, add a Media Source.
- Select the locally stored cricket-and-rain video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties. OBS defines this option as restarting the file after playback completes. The OBS Media Sources documentation describes the setting.
- Play the source and confirm that both picture and sound are present. For a meaningful loop check, let the media reach its end and confirm it starts again.
Make sure the scene’s audio is not muted and that the video is framed as intended. If the source does not play, recheck the selected file path and that the file itself opens locally.
Create a YouTube encoder stream and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then open the Stream tab. Create a new encoder stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. The URL directs the encoder feed; the key identifies the stream YouTube should accept. YouTube describes these settings in its live stream settings guide.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming preview to appear in Live Control Room, then check the picture and listen to the audio there.
- When the preview is correct, click Go live in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before a broadcast and monitoring stream health; see its streaming tips and live-streaming tips.
Choose settings and check your upload capacity
YouTube recommends keeping roughly 20% upload bandwidth in reserve above the stream bitrate. For example, a stream using 5 Mbps needs about 6 Mbps of available upload capacity to preserve that headroom. Treat that as a planning guideline, not a guarantee: other devices and changing network conditions can reduce what is actually available. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and stream health.

Choose stream settings that suit the source footage and your connection rather than increasing quality beyond what the recording contains. YouTube’s encoder and live-stream settings pages provide the relevant controls; check the live health indicators after sending a test feed. There is no need for a standalone hardware encoder just to loop a local ambience file: YouTube supports software encoders on computers as well as dedicated hardware encoders.
Plan long sessions and the YouTube replay
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. The threshold is an archive warning, not a statement that YouTube automatically ends every stream at 12 hours. YouTube also notes that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams exceeding 12 hours.

If a replay matters, end the broadcast before it reaches 12 hours, save a local recording as a backup, and start a new session. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; see Archive live streams and Turn on DVR on live streams.
Troubleshoot common problems

Copyright and channel policy considerations
Only broadcast audio and video you have the rights or permission to use. A nature recording’s availability online does not make it free to rebroadcast. This setup guide does not establish whether a particular recording is cleared for streaming.

Whether repetitive ambience content qualifies for monetization is not settled by the technical setup steps. Check YouTube’s current monetization policies for your channel and content rather than assuming that continuous playback is eligible.
