Set OBS’s streaming encoder keyframe interval to 2 seconds for YouTube Live. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds; its guidance does not specify a different interval for a continuous or 24/7 stream.
Set the interval to 2 seconds
In OBS, open the settings for the encoder you have selected for streaming and set its keyframe interval to 2 seconds. OBS’s official advanced encoder baseline also lists 2 seconds. The exact control location and wording can vary with OBS version, output mode, and encoder, so look in the selected streaming encoder’s settings rather than relying on one universal menu path. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds; the OBS advanced encoder guide gives a two-second baseline.
Understand seconds versus frames
The setting is an elapsed-time interval, not a fixed frame count. The number of frames between keyframes therefore depends on the stream’s frame rate. YouTube’s example is 60 frames at 30 frames per second for a two-second interval. At a different frame rate, the corresponding frame count differs; do not treat 60 frames as a universal setting. Does a continuous stream need a different interval?
No separate keyframe interval for continuous or 24/7 streams is specified in the YouTube encoder guidance reviewed here. Apply the general two-second recommendation to a long-running encoder stream. That setting concerns keyframe frequency; it does not by itself guarantee that a broadcast will remain uninterrupted.

Check the stream before relying on it
Preflight the encoder
- Confirm that the selected streaming encoder is configured for a two-second keyframe interval.
- Test a representative stream with typical motion and audio before starting a long broadcast. YouTube advises, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Use a stream quality your internet connection can reliably sustain, and test upload speed as part of preparation.
Monitor while live
Watch stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room during the broadcast. If an ingestion warning appears, use its wording to identify whether it concerns keyframe frequency or GOP size; changing the interval alone may not resolve every encoder or connection issue. Troubleshoot keyframe and GOP warnings
Incorrect video keyframe frequency
- Check the streaming encoder’s keyframe interval in OBS and set it to 2 seconds.
- Confirm you are interpreting the value as time. At 30 fps, two seconds corresponds to 60 frames; another frame rate produces a different frame count.
- Test again and check the Live Control Room’s stream health messages.
YouTube warns that intervals longer than four seconds can produce an incorrect-frequency ingestion error and buffering.

Incorrect GOP size
YouTube notes that ingestion errors can cause incorrect GOP sizes. If your encoder exposes open- or closed-GOP controls, YouTube says its pipeline requires a closed GOP for optimal transcoding. Check the encoder’s available settings and test again; not every encoder exposes the same controls.
