Choose a separate monitoring device—ideally headphones—for any source you need to hear locally, and make sure OBS is not capturing that same device through another audio path. Use Monitor Only only when the audience should not hear the source; use Monitor and Output when both you and viewers should hear it.
What OBS audio monitoring does—and what it does not do
Monitoring controls whether OBS plays a source through the operator’s selected monitoring device. It is separate from the source’s normal stream or recording output. In OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide, the OBS Project describes the monitor button as playing a source back through the monitoring device configured in Settings. The exact English labels can vary slightly by OBS version or localization, so check the labels in your installed version.
| Mode | What you hear locally | What viewers hear | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monitor Off | Not routed through OBS’s monitoring device | Normal output path remains available | Loop audio that should reach viewers but does not need a second local playback |
| Monitor Only | Yes | No; monitoring is not sent to stream or recording output | A source you need to hear privately, but that the audience should not hear |
| Monitor and Output | Yes | Yes | A source both you and viewers should hear, provided the monitoring output is not captured back into OBS |
If a source meter moves but viewers hear nothing, check whether that source is set to Monitor Only. If viewers hear it but you do not, Monitor Off may be correct: it does not mean the source is muted from the stream.
Set up monitoring without creating a duplicate audio path
1. Map the audio before changing settings
List the sources in the loop scene: media-source audio, microphone, desktop audio, capture-card audio, browser or player return, and any virtual cable or mixer. For each one, decide whether it belongs in the viewer mix, whether you need to monitor it locally, or both. This makes it easier to identify an unintended second route.

2. Remove duplicate global and scene capture
Check Settings > Audio for global desktop or microphone devices, then inspect the scene for Audio Input/Output Capture sources. Do not leave the same physical audio device active in both places unless you deliberately need two paths and have verified the result. The OBS Project’s Audio Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022, warns: “Audio Input/Output Capture source can cause an echo effect if you have the same device selected in Settings -> Audio.” It advises disabling the global device when adding devices directly to scenes.
3. Choose the monitoring device
In OBS’s audio settings, select the playback device you actually intend to use for monitoring. Headphones can help keep room-speaker sound from reaching a nearby microphone, but they do not fix duplicate digital routing. Avoid routing monitoring to a device that OBS also captures as desktop or scene audio.

4. Set each source’s monitoring mode
Open Advanced Audio Properties from the Audio Mixer. Leave the loop media and other ordinary viewer-program sources on Monitor Off unless you specifically need local playback. Choose Monitor Only for a source you want to hear privately but exclude from the stream. Choose Monitor and Output only when both the operator and audience should hear that source, and only after confirming the monitor output cannot feed back into the OBS mix.
5. Keep the YouTube playback return out of the program mix
Unless playback is intentionally part of the production, mute or close the YouTube stream return on the streaming computer. To check the public stream, use a separate device or headphones and ensure its playback is not captured by OBS. If the stream’s own audio comes back into the scene, it can sound like a delayed repeat. This is a routing precaution based on OBS’s duplicate-capture warning, not a YouTube-specific rule.

6. Verify the audience mix
Watch the relevant mixer meters, then make a brief recording or private test and listen to the result. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide says its meters show peak levels and that red indicates a level close to clipping. Check that the intended audio reaches the output once; a moving meter alone does not prove that the final mix is routed correctly.
Diagnose the symptom by following the signal
| What is happening? | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You hear a source twice | The same device is captured globally and in a scene, or the monitoring output is being captured again | Compare Settings > Audio with scene-level Audio Input/Output Capture sources; check the monitoring device and Advanced Audio Properties |
| You hear the loop, but viewers do not | The loop source may be set to Monitor Only | Change it to Monitor Off for stream-only playback, or Monitor and Output if it should also be heard locally |
| Viewers hear audio, but you do not | The source may be correctly set to Monitor Off | If local listening is needed, choose a monitoring mode and a device that is not captured back into OBS |
| The stream audio repeats after a delay | YouTube playback may be returning to the OBS mix, or a playback device may have duplicate capture paths | Mute or close local stream playback; inspect global and scene capture routes |
| A microphone picks up room audio | Acoustic pickup from speakers can reach the microphone | Listen through headphones rather than room speakers; still check for digital duplicates separately |
| The source meter moves, but output is missing or wrong | The meter confirms activity at that point, not necessarily correct destination routing | Check the source’s monitoring mode and confirm the final recording or test output |
An OBS forum administrator also describes hearing the same sound twice when monitoring is routed back into capture, and recommends checking the monitoring device and Advanced Audio Properties: OBS forum discussion about echo when monitoring a microphone. Device drivers, virtual mixers, capture hardware, operating systems, and OBS releases can change the exact signal path, so verify the route in your own setup.
