To stream an OBS playlist to YouTube using constant bitrate, set Rate Control to CBR under Settings → Output, then enter a video bitrate that matches your codec, resolution, frame rate and reliable upload capacity. Set up the playlist separately with an OBS VLC Video source; CBR does not create or loop the playlist.
Set up the YouTube stream and OBS playlist
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
- Copy the stream key and enter it in OBS under Settings → Stream. The key identifies where OBS sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Keep it private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
Add a looping playlist source
- Create or select the OBS scene that will appear on the broadcast.
- Add a VLC Video source and add the media files to its playlist.
- Check that Loop Playlist is on if the playlist should restart after its last item. OBS documents it as on by default; Shuffle Playlist is off by default.
VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. Match its architecture to OBS: a 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC. If you are looping one local file rather than a playlist, OBS’s Media Source can loop it, but its Loop setting is off by default.
Set CBR and choose a video bitrate
- In OBS, open Settings → Output. If the streaming controls do not show the encoder options you need, change Output Mode to Advanced.
- In the streaming encoder settings, set Rate Control to CBR (constant bitrate).
- Enter the video bitrate in kbps, choosing a value for the codec, output resolution and frame rate you intend to send to YouTube.
The precise labels and available encoder choices can vary by OBS version, operating system and selected hardware or software encoder. OBS documents the streaming bitrate controls under Output; Advanced mode exposes additional stream options.
| H.264 ingestion format | YouTube minimum video bitrate | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 live-encoder figures, accessed in 2026, not universal OBS defaults. YouTube lists different bitrate ranges for other resolutions and for AV1 or H.265/HEVC. Use the guidance row for your actual ingestion format rather than treating one number as right for every stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A bitrate does not guarantee identical visual quality across content. Fast motion can look different from a mostly static playlist at the same rate. Test representative video and audio before broadcasting; YouTube advises testing with movement and audio similar to the planned stream.
Check keyframes, codec and audio
- Keyframe interval: YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Video codecs and frame rate: YouTube’s standard RTMP/RTMPS guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, with up to 60 fps. Confirm that your selected OBS encoder and destination workflow support the codec you choose.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its recommended advanced settings specify 128 Kbps for stereo audio or 384 Kbps for 5.1 surround, with a 44.1 kHz stereo or 48 kHz 5.1 sample rate. These audio figures are separate from the video bitrate.
- Transport: YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transport. Specialized HDR or HLS setups may have additional requirements, so check the applicable YouTube guidance for those workflows.
Make sure your upload connection can sustain the stream
The configured bitrate must fit your stable upload bandwidth. YouTube recommends testing upload performance and leaving 20% upload headroom; account for a backup stream too, if you use one. A recommended video bitrate is useful only when the connection can sustain it reliably.

- Run an upload speed test on the connection and network you will use for the broadcast.
- Test privately or otherwise before a public broadcast, using representative motion and audio.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test. If the stream is unstable, lower the video bitrate enough to fit the available upload capacity.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| OBS has no VLC Video source option | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and match its bitness to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. |
| The playlist stops after the last item | Loop Playlist is off. | Open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| A single media file does not restart | The Media Source Loop option is off by default. | Enable Loop in that source’s properties. |
| OBS reports dropped frames or disconnects | The bitrate may exceed reliable upload capacity, or the connection may be unstable; Wi-Fi can be a contributing factor. | Lower the video bitrate and test again. OBS troubleshooting identifies unstable Wi-Fi as a possible issue and recommends trying a wired connection. |
| YouTube does not accept the feed | The stream key may be incorrect or the encoder settings may not match the chosen workflow. | Check the key in YouTube Studio and OBS under Settings → Stream; confirm the selected codec and other encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance. |

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply
CBR and looping settings only control encoding and playback; they do not grant permission to use the playlist’s contents or guarantee monetization. Use media you own or are licensed to broadcast, and check YouTube’s current copyright and channel monetization policies before running a recurring playlist stream. Repeatedly streaming material you do not have rights to can lead to claims, blocks or other enforcement; reused-content eligibility is a separate monetization question from technical stream setup.
