On Apple TV 4K, press and hold the TV button on the remote, choose Sleep Timer in Control Center, and select the time range shown. The countdown starts immediately and puts Apple TV into its sleep state when it ends.
Set a one-time Apple TV sleep timer
This timer is designed for a single viewing or listening session, such as falling asleep during a film. Apple’s current Apple TV 4K guide places it in Control Center rather than in the main Settings app.
- Start from any Apple TV screen.
- Press and hold the TV button on the Apple TV remote until Control Center appears. A brief press is not the same command.
- Select Sleep Timer.
- Choose one of the time ranges displayed on your Apple TV.
The timer begins counting down as soon as you select the interval. Apple’s documentation confirms selectable time ranges but does not list a fixed set of durations in the guide, so use the choices shown by your tvOS version.
See Apple’s instructions for the current workflow: Apple TV sleep timer and Control Center and remote buttons.

Cancel or change an active timer
Cancel it
- Press and hold the TV button to reopen Control Center.
- Select Sleep Timer.
- Select Cancel Timer.
Reopening the Sleep Timer control is also the way to check and manage an active countdown.
Use a different interval
Open Control Center > Sleep Timer and select another interval if your interface offers that choice. If it shows only cancellation, choose Cancel Timer, then open Sleep Timer again and set a new time. The available replacement behavior can vary by tvOS build, so do not assume that selecting a new value always overwrites the old timer.

Set recurring sleep after inactivity
If you want Apple TV to sleep automatically whenever it remains inactive, use the recurring setting instead:
- Open Settings.
- Select General.
- Select Sleep After.
- Choose the inactivity interval you want.
Sleep After is not a one-night playback countdown. It is a standing rule based on inactivity, and app playback may not behave identically in every app.

Will the television or receiver turn off too?
Apple TV’s sleep state and the connected display’s power state are related but not identical. With compatible HDMI-CEC hardware and the feature enabled, Apple TV 4K can coordinate power behavior with a television or receiver. Apple says it can turn on with the TV or receiver and turn off when that device is turned off.

That does not guarantee that every television will switch off when the timer ends. Results depend on HDMI-CEC support, the TV or receiver’s own setting, the HDMI input, and whether an intervening device passes CEC commands. Manufacturers use different names for HDMI-CEC, so check your television’s documentation for its CEC control.
If Apple TV sleeps but the screen remains on, verify CEC on the TV and receiver and check the connection path. If Apple TV wakes again, a remote press, HDMI-CEC wake signal, another connected device, or an automation may be responsible.

Sleep Timer is missing
The current instructions target Apple TV 4K running current tvOS. Apple notes that features can vary by hardware model, software version, language, and region.
- Confirm the remote is paired and controlling the Apple TV.
- Press and hold the TV button until Control Center opens; do not tap it briefly.
- Look for Sleep Timer in Control Center’s general controls.
- Check for a tvOS update if the control is absent. Updating is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that every model will gain the feature.
- If your goal is recurring inactivity sleep, use Settings > General > Sleep After instead.
Older Apple TV hardware and older or region-specific remotes may show different labels or layouts. A current Siri Remote uses the TV button; some silver remotes include a dedicated Power button.
Turn Apple TV off immediately
For an immediate shutdown rather than a delayed timer, press and hold the TV button, open Control Center, and select Power Off. Apple also lists Settings > Power Off. On a silver Apple TV remote with a dedicated Power button, holding that button can also turn the device off.
Power Off is an immediate command; it does not create a sleep timer.
