To send a radio station’s live AAC feed to YouTube with OBS, add it as an OBS VLC Video source, pair it with a visual, configure YouTube’s event stream URL and key in OBS, then check the preview and audio before going live. For an AAC audio file stored on your computer, use OBS’s Media Source instead. Network-feed compatibility depends on the station’s specific URL and transport, so test it before relying on it for a broadcast.
Choose the right OBS source
- Live radio station feed: Use VLC Video and enter the station’s published stream URL or playlist. OBS says this source uses VLC libraries for extended media support and can handle playlists, but its documentation does not guarantee compatibility with every network AAC feed. Confirm that your specific endpoint plays in OBS. OBS Media Sources
- AAC file on your computer: Use Media Source. OBS lists .aac among the supported audio-file types, along with .mp3, .ogg and .wav. This is for a file, not proof that every live radio URL will work. OBS Media Sources
If VLC Video is missing or cannot load as expected, OBS notes that VLC must match OBS’s architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
Set up the scene and confirm the audio
- In OBS, create or select a scene. Add a VLC Video source for the live station URL, or a Media Source for an AAC file.
- For VLC Video, enter the station’s published stream URL or playlist and start playback. The station must provide an endpoint you can access; compatibility is specific to that feed.
- Add a visual source, such as a station image, logo or program graphic. A typical YouTube encoder broadcast needs video as well as audio, so check that the intended visual is present in the scene. This follows from OBS’s scene/source model and YouTube’s video encoder requirements; it is not a special radio-only procedure. OBS Sources Guide YouTube encoder settings
- Check the OBS audio mixer: the meter for the intended source should move while the station audio plays. OBS recommends checking audio meters as part of setup. OBS Quick Start Guide
OBS captures desktop audio and a microphone by default. If you add an audio device as a scene source, avoid capturing that same device a second time through Settings → Audio; OBS warns that duplicate capture can create echo. OBS Audio Sources
Configure YouTube and OBS output
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the event and copy the event’s stream URL and stream key into OBS. YouTube treats the key like a password, so do not share it publicly. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder Manage live stream settings
- Set OBS’s output to match YouTube’s current encoder guidance: RTMP or RTMPS transport, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
- For stereo audio, YouTube lists a 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps audio bitrate. Select video resolution and bitrate based on the visual content, your available upload capacity and YouTube’s current requirements; do not assume the radio feed’s bitrate is an appropriate video bitrate. - Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the event preview in YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that both the visual and audio are present; then click Go live. YouTube’s encoder instructions use this preview-before-going-live sequence. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Run a short test before the scheduled broadcast. Check that the station feed continues playing, the OBS meter moves, and YouTube receives the expected picture and sound. OBS Quick Start Guide

Troubleshoot common problems
- No OBS audio meter activity: Confirm the correct source is active and that the station URL plays through the selected VLC source. A supported AAC file in Media Source does not establish that every network endpoint is compatible. OBS Media Sources
- Echo or doubled audio: If the audio device is also selected under Settings → Audio, remove one of the duplicate captures. OBS Audio Sources
- No YouTube preview: Check that the event’s stream URL and key were copied correctly, and wait for YouTube to receive the encoder signal before selecting Go live. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Stream key may be exposed: Reset the key in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS with the replacement. Manage live stream settings
Check broadcast rights before relaying the station
A station’s publicly playable feed is not, by itself, evidence that you have permission to rebroadcast its programs on YouTube. Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the audio and any visual material, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before transmitting. The specific station, its licensing terms and your permissions are not established here.
