To secure MediaMTX while forwarding a stream from a VPS to YouTube Live, use MediaMTX’s documented RTMPS forwarding workflow, require narrowly scoped authentication for clients, keep the Control API private, protect the stream key, and verify the current YouTube ingest details before going live. This guide covers forwarding an incoming MediaMTX path to YouTube; it does not describe pulling a YouTube watch-page stream into MediaMTX.
What this setup does—and does not do
MediaMTX is a media server and proxy for publishing, reading, proxying, recording, and playing back real-time audio and video. Its documentation provides a workflow for forwarding an incoming MediaMTX path to YouTube Live. In that workflow, a source publishes to MediaMTX and MediaMTX sends the path onward to YouTube.
That is different from asking MediaMTX to fetch an arbitrary YouTube watch-page URL. The official sources cited here do not establish that as the workflow. If your goal is to send a VPS-hosted feed to YouTube, continue below; if you mean to pull a YouTube video into MediaMTX, these instructions do not cover that.
Configure the YouTube forwarding destination safely
Use RTMPS and verify the live ingest details
MediaMTX’s forwarding guide documents a destination pattern in the form rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2#streamKey, with the hash separating the server URL from the stream key. Treat this as a pattern, not an endpoint to copy without checking: the guide says its hostname reflects what YouTube reported when the guide was last checked and asks users to confirm it remains correct. Check the ingest URL and stream details shown for your current YouTube event before deployment.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
RTMPS wraps RTMP in a TLS/SSL connection. Google’s documentation also emphasizes hostname authentication. MediaMTX’s guide includes a certificate-fingerprint example but warns that the certificate was invalid at its last check. Do not blindly pin that example fingerprint or assume it describes the current certificate; verify the live certificate and current documentation when configuring your destination. MediaMTX forwarding guide, YouTube Live encoder settings, and YouTube RTMPS developer guide provide the relevant details.
Keep the stream key secret
The stream key is part of the forwarding destination and functions as a credential. Restrict access to the MediaMTX configuration and the VPS account that can read it. Do not put a real key in screenshots, public examples, or logs that others can access. If a key is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the destination configuration.

Confirm both audio and video reach YouTube
The documented YouTube workflow requires both a video track and an audio track; a video-only stream can be silently rejected. Test the intended MediaMTX path with both tracks and check the current YouTube event’s ingest status before relying on it for a live broadcast. MediaMTX forwarding guide
Restrict who can publish, read, and administer MediaMTX
Require authentication and grant only needed permissions
MediaMTX supports an internal user database, an external HTTP authentication service, and JWT-based authentication. Its permissions can be restricted by action—including publish, read, playback, api, metrics, and pprof—and by path. Give each client only the actions and paths it needs. For example, a source that only sends to one path should not receive administrative API or metrics access unless it genuinely needs those capabilities.

If you use MediaMTX’s internal credentials, its documentation supports hashed credentials. The security guidance also recommends protecting credentials in transit with encryption or a VPN. Authentication limits who can use MediaMTX; encrypted transport or a VPN helps protect credentials as they cross the network. MediaMTX authentication documentation
Leave the Control API on localhost unless remote access is necessary
The Control API is localhost-only by default. Keep that default when you administer MediaMTX from the VPS itself. If remote access is necessary, configure authentication and limit network reachability to trusted systems; do not expose an administrative interface publicly without a deliberate access-control design. Validate the configuration and binary before deployment
Check the configuration
MediaMTX documents a --validate-conf option for validating a configuration before startup. Run the validator against the configuration you intend to deploy, then review any errors before restarting the service. This helps catch configuration mistakes, but it does not prove that the YouTube endpoint, stream key, network path, or media tracks are correct; test those separately. MediaMTX configuration documentation
Verify the release binary
Before running a newly downloaded MediaMTX release on a public VPS, verify its published SHA256 checksum or use the documented GitHub Attestations verification process. These checks help confirm the binary matches the release artifact. MediaMTX security documentation

Test the complete path before going live
- Check the source-to-MediaMTX leg. Confirm that the intended source can authenticate and publish to the correct path, and that its permissions do not extend beyond what it needs.
- Check the MediaMTX-to-YouTube leg. Confirm the current YouTube ingest URL and key, verify TLS certificate behavior instead of relying on a stale fingerprint, and inspect the VPS network path.
- Check media tracks. Confirm that the forwarded stream includes both audio and video.
- Check YouTube’s event status. Verify that YouTube receives the stream and reports it as expected before depending on it for a scheduled broadcast.
- Check administrative exposure. Confirm that the Control API remains local or, if remote access is required, is authenticated and reachable only from trusted networks.
Choose viewer delivery separately from YouTube forwarding
If viewers also read streams directly from MediaMTX, the browser guide describes HLS and WebRTC as different delivery options: HLS has higher latency but tends to encounter fewer connectivity problems, while WebRTC prioritizes lower latency. This choice concerns viewers reading from MediaMTX; it is separate from the outbound RTMPS connection that forwards the stream to YouTube. MediaMTX reading streams documentation
Troubleshooting common failures
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the current ingest URL and stream key in the YouTube event settings, then confirm the VPS can reach the destination. The hostname in an example guide may have changed.
- The connection fails certificate validation: Do not assume an example fingerprint is still valid. Check the live certificate and current YouTube ingest details before changing TLS verification behavior.
- YouTube appears to reject the feed without a clear error: Confirm that both audio and video tracks are present; the documented workflow warns that video-only streams may be silently rejected.
- A source can access more than its own path: Review MediaMTX authentication rules and narrow both the permitted actions and path scope.
- The Control API is reachable from outside the VPS: Restore localhost-only access unless remote administration is required. If it is required, add authentication and network restrictions.
- MediaMTX will not start after an edit: Run the documented
--validate-confcheck and correct configuration errors before restarting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is simply to keep an uploaded recording or playlist live on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it runs in the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera, and streams to YouTube only.
