For a life-size Halloween Slimer, plan a lightweight, static sculpture around a carvable prop-foam body, then add the face and choose a finish suited to where it will be displayed. There is no documented, tested Slimer pattern or complete bill of materials here: the available examples show different approaches, not one recipe. A wearable costume or flexible puppet needs different support and surface construction than a stationary display.
Choose the kind of Slimer you are building
Start by deciding whether the finished piece must stand still, be worn, or move. That decision affects the body structure, surface, and how much weight you can manage.
- Static display: A carved foam body is a practical starting point to investigate. Plan how it will be supported and how it will be transported before adding surface layers or details.
- Wearable costume: Prioritize weight, fit, visibility, ventilation, and movement. A sculpture designed to sit on a display stand is not automatically safe or comfortable to wear.
- Flexible puppet or figure: Movement calls for a flexible structure and skin. That is a different build challenge from carving a rigid display form.
ILM’s account of Ghostbusters II describes a more playful, cartoonish Slimer, a resculpt by Mark Siegel, and a very soft, flexible film sculpture with foam latex applied over a body form. It is production-history context, not a reproducible home method or a DIY materials list: ILM’s Slimer retrospective.
What foam should you use to sculpt a life-size Slimer?
For a stationary prop, look first at foam sold specifically for carving and scenic or film work. DUNA describes its CORAFOAM R-series prop foam as suitable for scenic, theming, and film carving, and says it can be shaped by hand or machine. Its guidance says not to use hot wire, so check the instructions for the exact material and tools before cutting: DUNA’s prop-foam information.

High-density polyurethane foam is another category to evaluate. FSI describes its foam systems for carving, casting, and sculpture, with multiple densities and options. Do not assume that all polyurethane foams behave alike; identify the exact system and consult its technical and safety information before choosing it: FSI’s rigid molding foam information.
These categories are starting points, not a head-to-head test. The sources do not establish a universally best foam or provide comparative measurements for weight, carving detail, strength, or cost. Base the choice on your planned support, desired finish, available tools and workspace, and whether the piece must flex.

Plan the body, support, and face
Before shaping foam, sketch the silhouette and decide where the sculpture will rest or attach to its support. Use a small Slimer figure as a visual reference for expression and proportions only; it cannot establish the dimensions or construction of a life-size prop. Hasbro describes its Squash & Squeeze Slimer as a 7-inch toy with over 40 sounds, while LEGO lists Peter Venkman & Slimer set #41622 at 228 pieces. Neither product is a full-scale pattern: Hasbro’s toy page and LEGO’s building instructions.
Establish the large forms first, then carve the facial features into the body or add compatible sculpted details. Decide in advance whether teeth, eyes, or other raised elements will be carved, attached, or formed separately. A maker’s 2020 Halloween costume example used glued high-density foam, including reused yoga-block and step-block scraps; rubber and paint; rotary-tool work for smaller details; epoxy plumbing putty teeth; and phosphorescent paint for a glow. Choose a surface finish for the display conditions
A carved foam surface can be left as a sculpted form or given an additional coating, depending on the appearance and durability you need. Reynolds Advanced Materials and Smooth-On describe materials for cosplay and props, including foam coatings and epoxy putty. Smooth-On identifies Epsilon Pro and UreCoat as coatings that can give carved or sculpted foam an impact-resistant finish. Treat these as optional product categories, not guaranteed matches for every foam: verify compatibility and follow the instructions for the specific foam, coating, adhesive, and details you select.
For an outdoor display, consider exposure to weather and handling when selecting the finish and support; the cited material descriptions do not establish outdoor performance for a particular Slimer build. For an indoor display, appearance and resistance to incidental contact may matter more. In either case, a coating will not make an unsupported or poorly joined sculpture structurally sound. Build in a safe order
- Read the product documents. Find the safety data sheet (SDS) and technical data sheet (TDS) for the exact foam, adhesive, coating, and two-part material you plan to use.
- Shape and assemble the body. Follow the foam maker’s tool guidance; DUNA, for example, says its CORAFOAM R-series is not for hot-wire cutting.
- Let applied materials cure before machining. CalArts’ 2 Pop workshop guidance recommends allowing adhesives, coatings, and two-part foams to cure before machining. Use the cure instructions for your chosen products.
- Control dust and scraps. Keep the work area clear and follow product-specific directions for ventilation, protective equipment, and cleanup.
- Use cutting and powered tools carefully. The CalArts guidance specifically cautions about knives and powered tools. Consult its foamed-plastics safety guidance alongside the instructions for your materials.
