On Debian, use a systemd timer to decide when a job runs and a oneshot service to run a script or API client that decides what “rotation” means. For edits to the playlist hosted on YouTube, use the YouTube Data API with the required authorization; yt-dlp can help inspect or select playlist entries, but its documented playlist features do not establish that it can reorder a remote playlist.
Define what “playlist rotation” should do
Before scheduling anything, turn “rotate” into a precise rule. It might mean moving one item to a different position, cycling through a subset, adding or removing items, or changing playlist metadata. These are different operations and may require different API calls. The title alone does not determine which behavior you want.
Debian’s default init system and service manager is systemd, so a timer and service are a native way to schedule recurring work. Debian Policy Manual: boot system
Choose the tool for the operation
Edit the remote YouTube playlist with the Data API
If the job must change the playlist stored on YouTube, use the official YouTube Data API playlist resources and identify the exact API operation needed for your rotation rule. The API’s playlists.update reference documents OAuth scopes and a quota cost of 50 units per update call. That figure applies to that documented method; total scheduled-job quota depends on every API operation the implementation makes. Do not assume that updating playlist metadata is the same as changing the playlist’s items or order.

You need authorized credentials suitable for the operation, and you must follow the YouTube API Services Terms. This is not a blanket legal determination about every form of automation; use the documented API access and review the applicable terms.
Use yt-dlp for supported reading or download workflows
Debian’s yt-dlp documentation describes playlist metadata, selection, and extraction capabilities. Those support workflows that read or select entries, not a claim that yt-dlp edits the ordering of a remote YouTube playlist. Keep extraction or downloading separate from playlist mutation. Site support can change as websites change, and Debian’s package documentation explicitly warns that listed support is not guaranteed. The cited documentation has different release contexts: a Bookworm manpage and Trixie package documentation for version 2025.04.30-1. Check the package and flags for your own Debian release before relying on a specific command. Bookworm yt-dlp manpage · Trixie yt-dlp package documentation
Separate the task from its schedule
A systemd service runs the task once and exits; a timer activates that service on a schedule. The Debian Reference demonstrates this pattern at user level, including a oneshot service and enabling its timer with the user manager. Debian Reference: systemd

1. Create a script that performs one rotation
Put the actual rule in a script or API client, for example at ~/bin/rotate-youtube-playlist. It should perform one run and exit with a meaningful success or failure status. Specify the playlist and the exact intended mutation in the script; a timer does not implement rotation logic by itself.
Before scheduling it, verify that the API operation matches the rule, that credentials are available securely to the process, and that a manual run reports failures clearly. Avoid putting OAuth secrets directly in a unit file. The right credential storage and authorization flow depend on the API client you choose.
2. Add a user-level oneshot service
For work belonging to your own account, create ~/.config/systemd/user/youtube-playlist-rotate.service:

[Unit]
Description=Rotate a YouTube playlist
[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=%h/bin/rotate-youtube-playlist
This is an illustrative starting point, adapted from Debian’s documented user-timer pattern, not a tested configuration. Use a system service only if the task genuinely needs system-wide management or execution outside your user manager. Ensure the script is executable and that its interpreter, dependencies, and file paths are available in the service environment.
3. Add a timer for the desired schedule
Create ~/.config/systemd/user/youtube-playlist-rotate.timer:
[Unit]
Description=Schedule YouTube playlist rotation
[Timer]
OnCalendar=daily
[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target
OnCalendar=daily is an example schedule, not a recommendation for every playlist. Choose an interval and calendar expression that fit the rotation policy and the API quota available to your project. Check the systemd calendar syntax and behavior on the Debian release you run; the required timing, missed-run policy, and retry behavior are implementation choices.

4. Enable and inspect the timer
Reload the user manager, enable the timer, and check its state and next activation:
systemctl --user daemon-reload
systemctl --user enable --now youtube-playlist-rotate.timer
systemctl --user status youtube-playlist-rotate.timer
systemctl --user list-timers
When investigating a run, inspect the service and its journal output:
systemctl --user status youtube-playlist-rotate.service
journalctl --user -u youtube-playlist-rotate.service
For a system-level unit, use the system manager commands instead of --user, and place the unit files in the system unit directory appropriate to your setup. User and system units do not share the same manager environment or enablement scope.

Make the scheduled environment reliable
A timer-launched process does not necessarily inherit the interactive shell environment you see in a terminal. Make the script’s executable path, working files, dependencies, credentials, and required environment variables explicit. Ensure the machine has network access when the job runs. Decide how failures should be logged and whether a later run should retry or simply wait for its next scheduled activation. These settings depend on the script and the Debian/systemd release; the sample units do not configure them.
- Authorization: Confirm that the client can obtain the required OAuth authorization without an interactive login at each run.
- Quota: Count all API calls made by one run, not just the update operation; the documented
playlists.updatecall costs 50 quota units. - Scope: Grant only the authorization needed by the chosen API operations and protect credentials from other users.
- Observability: Log the target playlist, action attempted, and result without printing secrets.
- Scheduling: Validate the timer expression and decide what should happen after downtime or a failed run rather than assuming the timer retries automatically.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The timer is not listed or enabled: Check that both unit files are under
~/.config/systemd/user/, runsystemctl --user daemon-reload, and enable the timer withsystemctl --user enable --now youtube-playlist-rotate.timer. - The timer activates but the service fails: Inspect
systemctl --user status youtube-playlist-rotate.serviceandjournalctl --user -u youtube-playlist-rotate.service. Check the script path, executable permission, interpreter, dependencies, and assumptions about the shell environment. - The script works in a terminal but not from systemd: Provide explicit paths and required environment settings instead of relying on interactive shell startup files; check that credentials and network access are available to the service process.
- The API rejects a change: Confirm that the selected API operation implements the intended mutation and that the request has the required OAuth authorization. Check current endpoint requirements and quota; the documented update method costs 50 units per call.
- The playlist is read or downloaded but not reordered: That is consistent with using yt-dlp’s documented extraction and selection features. Use an authorized API operation for remote playlist edits rather than treating a download command as an editor.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your actual goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded video rather than periodically editing playlist order, StreamNeo is a different kind of service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; the video streams as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera input, and it does not edit the ordering of a remote YouTube playlist. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a systemd timer change playlist contents by itself?
No. It only schedules activation of the service; the script or API client defines and performs the change.
Can yt-dlp reorder a YouTube playlist?
The cited Debian documentation establishes playlist extraction and selection behavior, not remote playlist-order editing.
