To rotate a YouTube playlist automatically, use the YouTube Data API to read its playlist items, calculate the order you want, and update item positions from a PowerShell script. Use Windows Task Scheduler to run the script on a schedule. Playlist changes require OAuth authorization, and YouTube must be set to Manual ordering for a requested position to take effect.
What “playlist rotation” means in this workflow
YouTube’s API provides operations to list and update playlist items; it does not provide a built-in rotation switch. Your script must define the rule—for example, move the first item to the end, or promote the next item—and calculate the new positions from the playlist’s current state.
The steps below describe a scheduled playlist-order change. Reordering a playlist is not the same as keeping a YouTube live stream running continuously.
Set up API access and OAuth

Use OAuth 2.0 for changes made to a playlist belonging to the signed-in YouTube account. Playlist write methods require an applicable YouTube authorization scope; an API key by itself does not authorize a playlist mutation. Check the supported scopes in the playlistItems.update reference.

Choose how the script will obtain and refresh OAuth credentials when it runs unattended. The official API and Windows task documentation do not prescribe a particular PowerShell OAuth library or token-persistence setup. Validate that your chosen method works for the account and Windows execution context that will run the scheduled task.
Identify the playlist and read its items

Use playlists.list to identify the target playlist and its playlist ID.

Call playlistItems.list with that playlist ID to retrieve its entries. Request the fields needed to identify each entry and its current position; page through results if the playlist has more items than fit in one response.

Keep the two IDs straight: the playlist item’s
ididentifies that entry in the playlist, whilesnippet.resourceId.videoIdidentifies the video it contains. Updates address the playlist item resource, not the video ID. See the playlistItems resource.
Define the rotation rule and calculate positions
YouTube positions are zero-based: the first item is position 0, the second is 1, and so on. Make the desired rotation rule explicit before updating anything.
- Move first to end: for a playlist with at least two entries, place the current first entry last and shift the remaining entries forward one position.
- Promote next: move the second entry to position
0and shift the preceding first entry to the position your policy specifies, such as the end. - Small playlists: decide what a one-item playlist should do (usually no change); an empty playlist has nothing to reorder.
Calculate positions from the fresh list immediately before writing. Do not assume the playlist has remained unchanged since the previous scheduled run: a person or another process may have added, removed, or reordered entries.
Update the playlist item safely

Confirm the playlist uses Manual ordering. YouTube documents manual ordering as the prerequisite for assigning a specific item position; a requested position is not a reliable way to reorder every special or system playlist.

For each entry whose position must change, call playlistItems.update with the playlist item’s
idand a deliberatesnippetcontainingplaylistId,resourceId, and the desiredposition. TheresourceIdidentifies the video; preserve the playlist and video identifiers associated with that entry. -
Be careful with the selected
partand request body. The update method can replace mutable values in the selected part, and values omitted from that part may be cleared. Include only the fields you intend to set, while supplying the required identifiers. -
Re-read the playlist after updates and verify the resulting order. If the item disappeared or the playlist rejects the operation, log the response and stop rather than repeatedly submitting the same mutation.
The live Google references consulted list a quota impact of 1 unit for playlistItems.list and 50 units per call for playlistItems.update. These reference pages do not state a publication year; quota details can change, so check the current method references before relying on these figures. Google also lists 50 units per call for playlistItems.insert.

Schedule the script with Windows Task Scheduler
Task Scheduler needs an action, a trigger, and a registered task. Microsoft distinguishes creating a task definition from registering it: New-ScheduledTask creates a definition object, while Register-ScheduledTask registers the definition on the local computer.

Save the script at a stable path, such as
C:ScriptsRotate-Playlist.ps1, and test it manually under the account that will run it. -
Create an action with
New-ScheduledTaskActionthat launches PowerShell and passes the script path and any required arguments. For example, the action can usepowershell.exewith an argument string such as-NoProfile -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File "C:ScriptsRotate-Playlist.ps1". Choose execution-policy settings consistent with your organization’s security policy; do not treat bypassing policy as a substitute for securing the script and credentials. -
Create a trigger using the frequency and start time you need, for example with
New-ScheduledTaskTrigger. Set the schedule to match the rotation rule and avoid a frequency that could cause a new run to begin before the previous one has finished.Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Register the task with
Register-ScheduledTask. Select a run-as account and logon configuration that can read the script, reach the network, and access the OAuth credentials. A task that works only in your interactive session may fail when run unattended. -
Run the task on demand from Task Scheduler, then inspect its last-run result and your script log before relying on the trigger.
Logging, retries, and common failures
- Authorization error: Confirm the OAuth token belongs to the intended account, grants a supported write scope, and can be loaded or refreshed in the scheduled task’s run context.
- Wrong item updated: Check that the update uses the playlist item
id, notresourceId.videoId. Verify the item still belongs to the target playlist before writing. - Position has no effect or is rejected: Confirm the playlist is manually ordered and that the target playlist supports the operation. Some playlist operations are unsupported.
- Unexpected metadata changes: Review the update’s selected
partand body. Omitted mutable values in the selected part can be cleared. - Quota or rate error: Record the API error and response status, avoid tight retry loops, and check current quota and error guidance in the YouTube Data API errors reference.
- Task runs manually but not on schedule: Check the task’s run-as account, access to the script and credential files, network availability, trigger settings, and whether another run is still active.
- Missing or deprecated playback fields: Do not use
contentDetails.startAtorendAtto control rotation; Google marks them deprecated and ignored if set.
For each run, log a timestamp, target playlist ID, the item IDs and calculated positions, request outcomes, and API error details. Make retries conditional: re-read the playlist first, recalculate from its current state, and only submit a mutation when it is still needed.
