To run a YouTube playlist-rotation script at a particular India Standard Time (IST) hour using conventional Debian cron, set the Debian system timezone to Asia/Kolkata, verify it, and schedule the script in the relevant user’s crontab. A TZ=Asia/Kolkata line in the crontab alone changes the command’s environment; it does not change when conventional Debian cron launches the job. The script also needs authorized access to the YouTube Data API and must perform the specific playlist change you intend.
1. Check Debian’s timezone and cron implementation
Start by checking the host’s current clock and timezone with timedatectl status or date. Also confirm which cron implementation and package version are installed: the timezone behavior described here is documented in Debian’s trixie crontab(5) manual, and implementations or releases can differ.
Conventional Debian cron uses the daemon’s configured timezone to decide when to launch jobs. The Debian manual puts the distinction plainly: “Even if a user specifies the TZ environment variable in his crontab this will affect only the commands executed in the crontab, not the execution of the crontab tasks themselves.” In other words, setting TZ for a job does not by itself schedule that job according to IST.
2. Configure the system to use IST
If the Debian machine can use India Standard Time system-wide, set its timezone administratively:

sudo timedatectl set-timezone Asia/KolkataVerify the result before choosing the cron hour:
timedatectl status
dateTo inspect available timezone names first, use timedatectl list-timezones. Debian Reference also documents dpkg-reconfigure tzdata as an alternative way to configure the system timezone.
A system timezone change affects more than this one cron entry: other cron jobs and services that use the system timezone may observe the change too. If that is not acceptable, do not assume that adding a TZ line solves it. Use a scheduler whose installed implementation explicitly supports per-job timezone scheduling, or a carefully tested wrapper that checks IST and runs the rotation only at the intended minute.
3. Schedule the script in the right user’s crontab
Use crontab -e as the account that should run the automation. Debian’s cron schedule has five time fields: minute, hour, day of month, month, and day of week. For a daily run at 06:15 in the configured system timezone, add:

15 6 * * * /usr/bin/python3 /home/playlistbot/rotate_playlist.py >> /home/playlistbot/rotate_playlist.log 2>&1Replace the time, interpreter, account paths, and script with values from your deployment. The absolute interpreter and script paths avoid relying on cron’s limited default environment. The redirection appends standard output and errors to the named log so a failed run is not silent; ensure the running account can write to that location.
Give the cron process access to the credentials required by your script. Store and protect credentials for the actual user running the job; cron does not automatically inherit the environment of an interactive shell. There is no single credential-storage layout established for every deployment, so verify that the chosen method is available to that account without placing secrets in the crontab or log.
4. Define exactly what “playlist rotation” means
There is no single YouTube playlist-rotation operation. Decide whether each run should change the order of existing items, add a video, remove an item, or combine those actions. Use the YouTube Data API to make the corresponding change; a cron schedule only launches your script.

Move an existing video to another position
Retrieve the playlist items with playlistItems.list. Keep the playlist ID, video IDs, and the playlist-item IDs returned by the API. To change an item’s position, use playlistItems.update on the playlist item and set snippet.position to the desired zero-based position. YouTube requires manual playlist ordering for position updates; an attempt against a playlist that is not manually ordered can return manualSortRequired.
Add or remove an item
Use playlistItems.insert to add a video and playlistItems.delete to remove a playlist item. These are distinct API actions from reordering. Some special playlists do not support insert or update operations.

Playlist writes require suitable OAuth authorization for an account that can manage the playlist. Before enabling cron, run the script manually as the same operating-system user and verify that the intended YouTube account can perform the requested action.

Make repeat runs safe where possible. For example, check whether a replacement item is already present before inserting it, and compare the current order with the desired order before updating positions. Decide what should happen if the playlist is empty, a video is missing or private, an API call fails, or one action succeeds while a later action fails. These safeguards matter because cron may run again after a partial failure; YouTube does not provide a built-in cron rotation feature.

The current YouTube Data API reference lists playlistItems.list at 1 quota unit, and playlistItems.insert and playlistItems.update at 50 units each. Avoid writes when the playlist already matches the desired state, and recheck the API’s quota documentation before deployment because quota policies can change.
Inspect the log after the scheduled time and include useful error reporting in the script, without logging OAuth tokens or other secrets. If the job is not running at the expected time, first check the system timezone and the installed cron implementation; then confirm the crontab belongs to the account you expect and that its command uses valid absolute paths. If the script runs but the playlist does not change, check authorization, playlist ordering, the selected playlist-item ID, and the API error returned.

6. If the server must keep another timezone
When changing the system timezone would disrupt unrelated jobs or services, choose a scheduler that explicitly supports per-job timezone scheduling, after checking the behavior of the implementation actually installed. Do not treat documentation for a different scheduler, such as systemd-cron, as evidence of how conventional Debian cron behaves.
A wrapper that checks the current IST time can also gate the work, but it needs deliberate handling for missed runs, duplicate invocations, and system time changes. Debian’s cron manual recommends checking date or time in the child process when a schedule cannot be expressed in cron syntax. Test the wrapper’s boundary conditions before relying on it for playlist changes.
