Scheduling a YouTube Live event creates its upcoming watch page; it does not play your conference recordings. To run recorded sessions as a marathon, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then send the session playlist to it through a compatible encoder. At the planned start, check the preview in Live Control Room and click Go live.
Before you schedule the marathon
Check that the channel can stream
YouTube’s setup guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Confirm eligibility before promoting an event; a scheduled page is not a substitute for access to live streaming. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
Prepare the program and rights
- Finalize the session files and order, titles, breaks, opening and closing slates, and any host segments. These are production preparations, not YouTube requirements.
- Confirm permission to rebroadcast each recording, speaker presentation, music track, slide, and other embedded material. Technical success or a successful test does not establish rights. The answer depends on agreements, permissions, and applicable jurisdictions.
- Decide whether someone will manage chat and session transitions. That affects whether you need a real-time response and which latency setting suits the event.
- Choose a public, unlisted, or private event deliberately. YouTube says default privacy settings differ for users aged 13–17 and adults, so do not assume the default is right for your audience.
Create the scheduled YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Open Manage, then select Schedule stream.
- Reuse a previous stream’s settings or create a new event. Review its title, description, visibility, scheduled time, and other metadata.
- Share the event URL once the page is ready. YouTube says scheduled streams may appear as upcoming in subscriber feeds; viewers can select Notify me to receive a reminder.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube describes stream keys as like the stream’s “password and address.” If it is compromised, reset it; only channel owners or managers can do that.

Send the recorded sessions to the event
Use a software or hardware encoder
- In the encoder, enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, or select YouTube directly if the encoder offers that integration.
- Load the conference sequence in the encoder or its playback system. Scheduling the YouTube event alone does not queue recordings stored on your computer.
- Start sending the feed early enough to inspect it. In Live Control Room, wait for the preview, then verify the intended session and audio.
- At the planned start, select Go live in Live Control Room. Continue monitoring the video, sound, and stream-health messages as sessions progress.

Consider a dedicated hardware option
YouTube’s encoder guide names the AJA HELO Plus and describes optional PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to YouTube Live without a computer. It is an option, not a requirement. Before buying, confirm the current feature set, device requirements, workflow, and availability with the manufacturer or seller; the YouTube description does not establish current price or comparative reliability.
Choose encoding settings for the program and connection
YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported. Its current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends constant bitrate, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Match codec, resolution, and frame rate to your source material and the available uplink rather than selecting the highest output by default.

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026—not independent test results. Bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the exact combination you plan to use.
Choose latency for the event format
For a one-way marathon with no live response, low latency is less important. If a host will answer chat in real time, lower latency can help the interaction feel immediate, but YouTube warns that lower latency can increase playback buffering. Consider your audience’s connection and the importance of stable playback when choosing. See YouTube’s latency guidance.

Rehearse and monitor before and during the event
- Test with the same kind of audio and motion as the real program, then inspect the preview and stream health. A static test screen may not reveal issues that appear in video-heavy sessions.
- YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and says to account for the bitrate of both primary and backup streams. This is platform guidance, not a guarantee against congestion.
- Set up the encoder at least two hours before the event and start encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start, as YouTube’s streaming tips advise.
- Check that the local archive file, if you are making one, is intact and growing as expected. Test backup-encoder failover rather than assuming it will work.
- Monitor sound and picture through the marathon. YouTube recommends preview and health checks, but does not set a universal staffing level or promise an uninterrupted stream.

Handle rights, monetization, and the archive carefully
YouTube provides rights-management and monetization controls in stream settings, but eligibility depends on channel status and the content. Do not assume every channel can monetize a marathon or that the organizer owns all material presented in conference sessions. Resolve rights for recordings, music, slides, and speaker contributions before scheduling.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. After the event, check that the recording is present and review session boundaries and transitions. The documented workflow calls for ending the stream and stopping the encoder from sending content; coordinate both steps so the event does not continue unintentionally.
