Decide what “rotation” means for your playlist
Before building the flow, specify what should happen at each scheduled time. For example, you might add a selected video and remove an older playlist item, or replace the current item according to a sequence you maintain. There is no single universal rotation policy: define the selection rule, whether to add, remove, or both, and what should happen if a target video is already present.
Keep the policy separate from the schedule. A trigger says when the flow runs; your logic determines which video to add and which existing playlist item, if any, to remove.

Direct API requests from Node-RED
Calling the YouTube Data API from an authenticated HTTP request in the flow is the documented route for playlist changes. It gives you direct control over request bodies, response handling, and logging, but you must configure OAuth authorization and handle API errors. The official references describe the required operations: playlistItems.insert and playlistItems.delete.

Community YouTube node
The Flow Library listing for node-red-node-youtube shows version 0.0.5 and documents nodes for listing channel, playlist, and playlist-item information. That description does not establish write support for inserting or deleting playlist items, nor does it establish current maintenance status. Use it for this workflow only if you verify the needed write operations, OAuth handling, and error behavior for the version you install.
Schedule the flow with an explicit time zone
A simple timer can work for a basic interval, but a wall-clock schedule needs deliberate time-zone handling. The independently maintained node-red-contrib-cron-plus documents cron and date schedules, dynamic schedule control, time-zone support, and persistent schedule state. Its Flow Library page identifies version 3.2.0; check the package’s current documentation and behavior before relying on a feature in production.

Choose either UTC or a region/area time zone, based on whether the rotation should follow a fixed global time or local clock time. Cron-plus documents that a repeated local time during a daylight-saving transition fires once. If a forward clock change skips the scheduled time, it runs as soon as possible after the transition. Those details matter for schedules intended to run at a specific local hour.
Build the scheduled rotation flow
- Configure the scheduler. In Node-RED, install and configure a scheduler such as cron-plus, then set the desired schedule and time zone. Decide whether it should run once at a wall-clock time or at a repeating interval.
- Read the target playlist. At each trigger, retrieve the playlist items and retain the playlist ID and each item’s playlist-item ID. The playlist ID identifies the destination playlist; a playlist-item ID identifies the particular entry in it.
- Apply your rotation rule. Select the video resource to insert and identify any existing playlist item to remove. Check for conditions such as the video already being in the playlist before issuing a write.
- Insert a video when required. Send an OAuth-authorized request to
playlistItems.insertwith the destination playlist ID and the video resource ID in the request body. Consult Google’s current API reference for the request fields, allowed OAuth scopes, and response format. - Delete an existing entry when required. Send an OAuth-authorized request to
playlistItems.deleteusing the playlist-item ID—not the video ID. Check the current API reference for allowed scopes and response details. - Record what happened. Log the scheduled time, operation, target playlist and item identifiers, response status, and any error. If a request fails ambiguously, inspect the playlist state before retrying; a blind retry can repeat or compound a change.
OAuth, IDs, and API quota to account for
Playlist insert and delete operations require OAuth authorization. The API references list the allowed scopes for each operation; grant only the scope your flow needs and plan for the token setup and renewal behavior in your chosen implementation.

Keep the identifiers straight: insertion uses a playlist ID plus a video resource ID, while deletion uses the playlist-item ID. Mixing up the video ID and playlist-item ID is a common source of failed deletion requests.
Google’s YouTube Data API documentation, accessed October 3, 2026, lists a cost of 50 quota units per playlistItems.insert call and 50 per playlistItems.delete call. The API guide reports 10,000 default daily units combined for other endpoints and says the default quota may change. Check the live references and your project’s quota console before deployment: YouTube Data API quota costs.

Make failures visible and recover safely
The API documents authorization failures, missing IDs or resources, duplicate playlist videos, unsupported playlist operations, and maximum-item conditions. Handle errors as explicit flow outcomes rather than assuming every scheduled write succeeds.
- Authorization error: confirm the OAuth token is valid and that its granted scope permits the operation.
- Missing or invalid identifier: verify the destination playlist ID and whether you are passing the playlist-item ID for deletion or the video resource ID for insertion.
- Duplicate video: check the existing playlist state and decide whether the rotation policy should skip, retain, or otherwise handle an already-present video.
- Unsupported operation or item limit: inspect the API response and playlist state; do not keep retrying an operation the API rejects.
- Unclear outcome after a timeout: read the playlist again before issuing another write so the flow does not blindly repeat an operation that may have succeeded.
Test with a playlist and schedule you can safely inspect before enabling a recurring production flow. Confirm the trigger time, selected IDs, API response, and resulting playlist state.
