You can schedule a YouTube live event in YouTube Studio, but scheduling a playlist does not make its videos play as the live broadcast. A scheduled event creates the watch page and timing; an encoder or playout system must supply the video feed. For a holiday programme made from prerecorded videos, set up both parts, then promote the event page to viewers.
What YouTube schedules—and what it does not
YouTube treats a live broadcast and a playlist as different things. In its playlist guide, a playlist is a collection of videos to organize and watch. Its live-streaming workflow separately schedules a broadcast and connects an encoder to provide the stream. The documented workflow does not establish that YouTube Studio can take an ordinary channel playlist and broadcast its contents sequentially as a live feed. See YouTube’s playlist guide and encoder-based livestream instructions.
There are also two different meanings of “schedule a video.” A scheduled upload is a video set to become public at a chosen time; a scheduled livestream is an event with a watch page that still needs a live feed. The upload-publishing workflow is described separately in YouTube’s scheduled video publishing guide.
Choose the right setup for your holiday programme
| Approach | Best fit | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Live presentation with an encoder | A host, ceremony, discussion or other event being produced live | Schedule the event, then connect an encoder using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. The encoder must send the actual programme feed. |
| Prerecorded videos played as a live feed | A continuous or sequential programme made from prepared recordings | Use software, hardware or a cloud playout service that can send the programme as an encoder feed. Check that it supports the sequencing and timing you need. |
| Scheduled public video | One uploaded recording that should become public at a particular time | Schedule the video’s publication; this is not a live event and does not create a livestream feed. |
YouTube’s encoder help identifies supported encoder approaches and lists AJA HELO Plus hardware. The page describes the device’s PlayToStream functionality for scheduling prerecorded media to stream directly to YouTube Live. This is an optional specialist hardware route, not a requirement for scheduling a standard event. Confirm current manufacturer instructions and compatibility before relying on it. See YouTube’s encoder information.

Schedule the YouTube live event
- Open Live Control Room: in YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live, and open Manage.
- Create the event: select SCHEDULE STREAM. You can reuse previous stream settings or create a new stream. Follow the current prompts to set the title, description, visibility, date and start time. The encoder workflow is documented in YouTube’s create-a-live-stream guide.
- Save the event and note its watch-page URL: use that event link in announcements and reminders. Scheduling the event makes a page for viewers; it does not by itself start or supply the programme feed.
- Connect the feed: in the encoder or playout system, enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key associated with the event. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with viewers. Follow the chosen encoder’s current setup instructions.
- Test before the holiday: verify the encoder can reach YouTube, the correct event is selected, the picture and audio are right, and the feed behaves as intended. For prerecorded programming, check the sequence and planned start against the event time rather than assuming the playlist itself will launch the broadcast.
Plan dates and promote the watch page
Build the calendar for the audience you serve, including its time zone and any regional or state observances that matter to viewers. YouTube’s live scheduling guidance recommends taking notable local or global holidays into account, introducing a livestream schedule and communicating changes; see YouTube’s live upload-schedule tips.
For two historical examples of Indian public-broadcasting practice, the Press Information Bureau documented Doordarshan Republic Day coverage beginning at 9:15 AM on January 26, 2022, with YouTube availability and a playlist link (PIB release, January 24, 2022). A separate PIB release promoted a DD National playlist containing multiple livestreams for Independence Day on August 15, 2021 (PIB release, August 14, 2021). These are dated examples, not current-year schedules or a complete official holiday list. Check an appropriate current government calendar before publishing dates or describing the full set of national holidays.

A scheduled stream may appear in subscribers’ feeds as upcoming, where viewers can select “Notify me,” according to YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance. Share the event URL early, state the time zone plainly, and post an update if the date, time or programme changes. A playlist link can help viewers find related videos, but it is distinct from the event watch page and from the encoder feed.
How to choose a feed method
For a live host or production, a local software encoder can provide direct control over the live presentation, but the producing computer and internet connection have to remain available while it is sending the feed. Dedicated hardware is another encoder option; a device with prerecorded playout can suit scheduled media, though setup and operating steps depend on its manufacturer. A cloud playout service can keep prerecorded playback running without leaving a home computer on; compare its YouTube support, sequencing controls, recovery behavior, storage and cost before choosing one. YouTube’s documentation establishes encoder and hardware options, but does not provide a current price comparison among cloud services.

Troubleshooting before the broadcast
- The scheduled page exists but no programme appears: the event is only the watch page. Start and connect the encoder or playout system with the correct stream URL and key.
- The wrong event receives the feed: confirm the selected stream and key in the encoder against the event you scheduled in Live Control Room.
- Prerecorded videos are not playing in sequence: verify sequencing in the encoder or playout system. A YouTube playlist organizes videos but is not documented as the live feed controller.
- The programme starts at the wrong time: check the event’s date, time zone and start time, and compare them with the playout schedule and the audience-facing announcement.
- Viewers cannot find the event: share the scheduled watch-page URL, not only a playlist or channel link. Check the event’s visibility and ensure viewers have the correct time and time zone.
- Plans change: update the event information where appropriate and communicate the change through the same channels used to announce it; YouTube recommends telling viewers about schedule changes.
