You can schedule a YouTube livestream in YouTube Studio, but the scheduled event does not switch your music from a day playlist to a night playlist. To do that, set up separate playlists and schedule the change in the playback system feeding YouTube. Then connect that system to a scheduled YouTube stream, test the handoff, and plan for interruptions, archives, and music rights.
What YouTube scheduling does—and what it doesn’t
YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room lets you schedule an upcoming livestream, create a watch page, share the event, and let viewers opt into reminders. It also provides the stream URL and key your encoder needs to send video and audio to YouTube. YouTube’s documented stream settings do not establish a native clock-based feature that changes music playlists at set times. Schedule the broadcast in YouTube; schedule the day-to-night music change in your playback system. YouTube’s guide to creating a livestream and stream settings describe these controls.
Prepare the channel, music, and schedule
Confirm livestream access
Make sure the channel is eligible to livestream and that you can access its Live Control Room. Set the correct channel, event title, visibility, and start time. Choose the time zone deliberately: the playback automation must use the same intended local schedule, even if its settings display time differently.
Build two usable music sets
Prepare a daytime selection and a nighttime selection in the playback system you plan to use. Check that each playlist contains enough material for its intended period and that transitions between tracks work as expected. Decide whether the change should occur once daily or at another cadence, then configure that schedule in the playback system—not in YouTube Studio.

Clear the rights for the whole use
Before streaming, verify that the music license covers live transmission, the stream archive, relevant territories, and commercial use if applicable. A license for an ordinary uploaded video may not cover live streaming or the resulting archive. YouTube’s livestream terms say creators must have the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected track can trigger a warning, placeholder, interruption, or termination if the issue persists. Even when you have a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams. YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says Creator Music does not currently support licensing for live content. YouTube points creators toward the Audio Library, original music, or third-party music whose terms explicitly permit the planned use.

Create and connect the scheduled livestream
- Schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, open Manage, then choose Schedule stream. Create an event or reuse settings from a previous stream. Confirm its title, visibility, date, and time. Scheduling creates an upcoming event that viewers can visit and share; it does not start the music playlist automation.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In the Live Control Room, get the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in your encoder or streaming system. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots.
- Start the playback and encoder setup early. YouTube advises setting up at least two hours before a livestream and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Start the programmed output early enough to check it in the Live Control Room preview.
- Inspect the preview, then go live. Confirm that the correct channel and event are selected, the picture is present, and the music is audible without clipping or unwanted silence. When the preview is ready, start the stream in the Live Control Room if it has not started automatically.
- Verify the public viewing experience. Open the watch page and check playback from the channel page and a mobile device. Confirm the scheduled event is accessible and that the day playlist is playing as intended.
YouTube’s livestreaming tips recommend preparation, preview checks, failover testing, and ongoing audio and video monitoring. YouTube also discusses encoder options; software encoders are an option, while professional-grade hardware encoders may suit higher-production events. Neither is a substitute for confirming that your chosen playback setup supports timed playlist changes and unattended operation.
Automate and test the day-to-night change
Configure the playback system to switch selections at the time you chose. The exact controls depend on the software or hardware you use; YouTube’s stream scheduling controls do not perform this playlist switch. Do not assume a particular encoder supports scheduled playlists without checking its documentation.

- Run a full rehearsal that crosses the scheduled change time. Confirm the correct playlist starts and the stream stays live.
- Listen through the transition for silence, overlapping tracks, sudden level changes, or an unintended return to the first playlist.
- Check that the encoder or playback system continues sending a valid feed if a track ends, a playlist is empty, or the system needs to recover.
- Test the failure and recovery steps you expect to use, and keep monitoring audio and video during the live broadcast.
For an unattended channel, also decide who will notice and respond if the stream drops. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover, checking watch-page access, and monitoring the stream rather than treating a scheduled start as proof that the broadcast will run uninterrupted.
Plan for stream interruptions and archives
YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish a single complete 24-hour replay for a nominally continuous channel. Plan for restarts or interruptions and do not promise one uninterrupted 24-hour archive on that basis. If preserving recordings matters, verify your encoder’s recording and storage options separately and confirm the archive is growing where relevant.

Troubleshooting common problems
- The stream is scheduled, but the night playlist never starts: YouTube scheduling creates the event; it does not establish time-based playlist switching. Check the playback system’s schedule, selected time zone, and automation status.
- The preview does not appear: Check that the encoder is running and that the stream URL and key were copied correctly into it. Confirm the correct event and channel are open in Live Control Room.
- The stream is live but there is no sound: Check the playback output and encoder audio input, then listen to the preview before relying on the public watch page. Confirm the playlist has playable tracks and that output is not muted.
- The stream is interrupted after a music claim or warning: Stop using the disputed material and resolve the rights issue. Confirm the license covers live use and archives; ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where needed.
- The archive is shorter than a full day: YouTube’s automatic-archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single 24-hour replay. Plan recording and operational restarts accordingly.
- The playlist changes at the wrong hour: Check the automation system’s time zone, daylight-saving behavior, and configured change time, then repeat a rehearsal across the transition.
