Me llamo or mi nombre es: which should you use?
| Phrase | Literal structure | How it works in an introduction |
|---|---|---|
| Me llamo Ana. | “I call myself Ana.” | A natural, common way to introduce yourself; it means “My name is Ana.” SpanishDictionary.com describes it as the most common way to introduce yourself, and Lawless Spanish teaches it as the general custom. SpanishDictionary.com; Lawless Spanish. |
| Mi nombre es Ana. | “My name is Ana.” | A valid alternative that Spanish speakers will understand. SpanishDictionary.com calls it common; Lawless Spanish says it is not the general custom described in its lesson. Neither account makes it grammatically wrong. SpanishDictionary.com; Lawless Spanish. |
In practice, choose Me llamo [name] when you want the straightforward, natural default. Use Mi nombre es [name] if you prefer the literal wording or it suits the context. The available usage guidance does not establish a universal rule that mi nombre es is formal, stiff, or confined to official situations.
How me llamo works
Me llamo is the first-person singular form of the reflexive verb llamarse. The word me pairs with llamo to express “I call myself”; idiomatically, the phrase gives your name.
- Me llamo Juan. — My name is Juan.
- Yo me llamo Ana. — My name is Ana.
Yo means “I,” but it is optional in Yo me llamo Ana: me llamo already identifies the first-person form. You can simply say Me llamo Ana.

Ask someone’s name: informal and formal
The form of llamarse changes depending on whom you are addressing. Use te llamas for an informal question and se llama with formal usted.
- ¿Cómo te llamas? — What’s your name? (informal)
Me llamo Juan. — My name is Juan. - ¿Cómo se llama usted? — What’s your name? (formal)
Me llamo Ana. — My name is Ana.
Including usted makes the formal addressee explicit. The informal/formal distinction here concerns the question you ask the other person; it does not by itself establish that mi nombre es is a formal-only expression.
Other useful ways to introduce yourself
- Soy Ana. — I’m Ana. A short, simple alternative.
- Mi nombre es Guillermo, pero mis amigos me dicen “Memo”. — My name is Guillermo, but my friends call me “Memo.”
Keep the two main constructions separate: say Me llamo Ana or Mi nombre es Ana, not Me llamo es Ana. The latter combines parts of two different sentence patterns.
