To say “Happy Passover” in Hebrew, write חג פסח שמח and transliterate it as Chag Pesach Sameach. Hebrew is read from right to left, so keep the words in this order when writing the greeting.

1. Write the greeting in Hebrew

חג פסח שמח

This is the explicit Passover greeting. A 2026 joint NATAL and Masorti Movement Haggadah prints the Hebrew phrase alongside “Chag Pesach Sameach!” (2026 NATAL and Masorti Movement Haggadah), and a Canadian prime ministerial Passover statement uses the same wording (Canadian Passover statement).

2. Read it from right to left

Hebrew runs right to left. The phrase’s word order is חג פסח שמח; preserve that order when copying it into a message or onto a card.

3. Use the common transliteration

Chag Pesach Sameach is a common Latin-letter rendering of חג פסח שמח. Transliteration spellings can vary, so this article uses one consistent form. The available sources attest the transliteration but do not establish a detailed pronunciation guide; for precise pronunciation, listen to a qualified Hebrew speaker or consult a reliable Hebrew audio resource.

4. Know what the words convey

The phrase names the holiday directly: חג פסח שמח is naturally rendered in English as “Happy Passover.” One language-learning guide gives a more literal gloss, “Happy Passover holiday,” but “Happy Passover” is the natural English greeting used in institutional contexts (language-learning guide; Canadian Passover statement).

5. Choose between the specific and general greeting

Hebrew Transliteration Meaning and use
חג פסח שמח Chag Pesach Sameach “Happy Passover”; explicitly names the holiday.
חג שמח Chag Sameach “Happy holiday”; a shorter, general greeting that can also be used for Passover.

The distinction is specificity: use חג פסח שמח when you want to make clear that you mean Passover. חג שמח is suitable when the holiday is already clear from context. A Hebrew-language explainer distinguishes the general form from the Passover-specific one (Hebrew greeting explainer).

6. Consider an optional alternate

פסח כשר ושמח is transliterated Pesach Kasher V’Sameach and means “a kosher and happy Passover.” A language-learning guide lists it as an alternate greeting (language-learning guide). It is an option, not a correction to חג פסח שמח or a form established as preferred by every community.

Chag Pesach Sameach!
