How to Run Two YouTube Live Streams at Once on One Azure VM

Two simultaneous YouTube streams can run from one Azure VM if the encoder, compute capacity, and outbound bandwidth can sustain both. Here’s how to configure and test them.

Yes—one Azure VM can send two feeds to YouTube if its encoder can produce two simultaneous outputs and the VM has enough encoding capacity and outbound bandwidth. Create both events in YouTube Live Control Room, map each encoder output to the matching event’s stream URL and key, and test both feeds before going live. YouTube’s stated limits are 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key; both apply at the same time.

First decide whether you mean two independent events or one event in landscape and vertical formats. Those are different setups, and YouTube’s built-in horizontal-and-vertical dual-stream feature may handle the latter without two independent programs.

Choose the right two-stream setup

What you want to broadcast What to configure Key consideration
Two independent programs, feeds, or event pages Create two YouTube live events and configure two encoder outputs, each pointed to its event’s stream URL and key. Check both the channel-wide and per-key active-stream limits, then test each feed and the combined network load.
One program for landscape and vertical audiences Use YouTube’s horizontal-and-vertical dual-stream feature. For a third-party encoder, YouTube’s instructions describe a second key for the vertical output, with each format sent to its corresponding key. Enable the vertical stream before starting; YouTube says it cannot be added after the stream has begun.

YouTube’s current help pages state a maximum of 10 active streams per channel and 3 per stream key. Both limits apply concurrently, so two independent events fit within those ceilings only if the channel and the keys being used have capacity available. The pages reviewed do not display publication years.

Set up two independent events

  1. Create both events. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule each event. Check each event’s privacy, metadata, and destination before configuring the encoder.
  2. Get the ingestion details for each event. In Live Control Room, retrieve the stream URL and key for each event. Keep each event’s details together so you can map the correct encoder output to the correct event. YouTube describes stream keys as the password and address that tell the encoder where to send the feed.
  3. Configure two encoder outputs. Use an encoder setup that supports simultaneous outputs. Point output one to event one’s URL and key, and output two to event two’s URL and key. Confirm which video and audio sources feed each output. YouTube’s general encoder instructions do not certify a particular third-party multi-output application or its compatibility with a particular Azure image, driver, or VM size.
  4. Plan for the combined bitrate. Add the target bitrates of both outputs. YouTube advises upload capacity of 1.5 to 2 times the combined target bitrate for stability. For example, two outputs totaling 10 Mbps call for a 15–20 Mbps upload target. This is a planning margin, not a guarantee of performance on a specific VM or network route.
  5. Test both feeds before the event. Start both outputs in a test or scheduled setup, verify that each YouTube preview shows the intended program and audio, and monitor stream health while both are active. Include representative motion and audio in the test; a static test image may not reveal problems that appear with the real program.

Choose encoder settings and size the connection

YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Apply settings appropriate to each output, then add the two target bitrates before planning the Azure VM’s outbound capacity.

Output example YouTube-listed recommended bitrate How to use the figure
H.264, 1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps Use as the target for that output if choosing the listed H.264 recommendation; include it in the combined total.
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps Use as the target for that output if the encoder and YouTube ingest workflow support the chosen codec; include it in the combined total.
H.264, 1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps Use as the target for that output if choosing the listed H.264 recommendation; include it in the combined total.
AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps Use as the target for that output if the encoder and YouTube ingest workflow support the chosen codec; include it in the combined total.

These are YouTube-published recommendations, not measurements of an Azure deployment. For two identical H.264 1080p60 outputs at the listed 17 Mbps each, the combined target is 34 Mbps; applying YouTube’s 1.5–2× planning margin gives 51–68 Mbps of upload capacity. Actual route throughput and sustained encoding performance still need testing.

What Azure VM specifications do—and do not—tell you

Microsoft documents the NVadsA10 v5 family as GPU-optimized and lists GPU-accelerated rendering and remote-frame encoding support in the Azure Virtual Desktop context. Its VM-size page lists fractional and full A10 GPU configurations and expected maximum network bandwidth by size. Microsoft cautions that the bandwidth values are ceilings, not guarantees; actual throughput depends on congestion, workload, and network configuration.

Those specifications can help shortlist capacity, but they do not establish which Azure size can encode two YouTube outputs in your chosen software. The Azure Virtual Desktop graphics documentation is not proof that a particular OBS or other encoder build can access hardware encoding on your VM image and driver. Verify operating-system, driver, and encoder compatibility for the exact deployment. If hardware encoding is unavailable, measure whether the VM’s CPU can sustain both encodes at the intended resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.

Protect stream keys and follow YouTube’s content rules

  • Keep keys private. Treat each stream key as a credential. Do not paste it into public chat, screenshots, scripts, or shared documentation. If a key is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update the matching encoder output with the replacement.
  • Confirm you have rights to the material. Before streaming recorded video, music, or other third-party material, check that you have the necessary rights and that the content complies with YouTube’s current policies. A scheduled or continuous stream is not an exception to copyright requirements.
  • Separate copyright from monetization eligibility. Permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are not the same question. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for the specific content and channel rather than assuming that permission alone guarantees monetization.
  • Monitor each event independently. Check stream-health messages and previews for both events; a healthy output does not prove the other output is reaching its destination correctly.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
One event receives no video The output is pointed to the wrong stream URL or key, or that output did not start. Compare the output’s destination and key against that event’s Live Control Room details; inspect that event’s preview and encoder status.
The wrong program appears on an event The two outputs or their video/audio sources were mapped incorrectly. Verify the source assignment for each output, then test both previews again before the live event.
Both outputs start, then show connection or health problems The combined bitrate may exceed stable outbound capacity, or the route may be congested. Check the total of both output bitrates and compare it with the 1.5–2× upload planning target. Test sustained throughput under the actual workload; a VM’s listed maximum bandwidth is not guaranteed throughput.
Video stutters or an output drops under load The VM may not sustain two simultaneous encodes with the selected settings. Check encoder load, hardware-encoding availability, and CPU capacity. Confirm the VM image and drivers support the encoder path you intend to use, then test both outputs together.
YouTube reports a key or ingest problem The key may be incorrect, stale, or compromised, or the encoder may be sending to the wrong destination. Recheck the event’s stream URL and key. If the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.
Vertical output is missing after the horizontal stream has started The dual-stream format was added too late or was not mapped to its corresponding key. Stop and configure the horizontal and vertical outputs correctly before starting the next stream; YouTube says vertical cannot be added after start.
