Short answer: OBS Studio is a desktop application, not a conventional Windows service. For an always-on YouTube stream, the better-supported approach is to launch OBS in the intended Windows user session and use its documented --startstreaming option if you want it to begin streaming automatically. Then separately verify Windows startup, OBS sources, YouTube’s broadcast state, and your recovery plan. An OBS process starting is not proof that viewers can see a live broadcast.
Why running OBS as a Windows service is different
“Service” is sometimes used informally to mean a program that starts in the background. In Windows, however, a service is a specific operating-system process model. Microsoft says services are designed to run unattended, typically without a graphical interface; services cannot directly interact with users in modern Windows, and all services run in Terminal Services session 0. See Microsoft Learn’s Interactive Services documentation, last updated January 7, 2021.
OBS is a GUI application that may depend on a logged-in desktop session, initialized sources, and available audio or video devices. Putting it in a service context can therefore leave it without the interactive environment you expect. Microsoft also advises against interactive services in new code. A generic service wrapper does not, by itself, resolve those session and source-availability issues, and the OBS documentation cited here does not endorse a wrapper-based setup.
Use OBS’s documented automatic-launch option
The OBS Project documents a launch parameter for starting a stream: --startstreaming. Its guidance also calls out an easily missed Windows detail: automated launches need the working directory set to the folder containing obs64.exe. The page gives that instruction for scheduled tasks and other automated launches, but it is not a complete unattended-streaming or recovery design. - Prepare OBS manually first. Open OBS in the Windows account and session you intend to use. Configure the scene, sources, audio, encoder, and YouTube connection, then confirm a normal test stream before automating startup.
- Find the OBS executable folder. Locate
obs64.exeand note the directory that contains it. Automated launch must use that directory as its working directory, identified in Task Scheduler as “Start in…” in the OBS documentation. - Choose how OBS should launch. If you use a Windows startup mechanism or Task Scheduler, configure it to launch OBS in the intended user session. Add
--startstreamingonly if you want OBS to begin sending the configured stream automatically. The exact task options depend on your Windows version and whether you require sign-in; the OBS launch-parameter page does not prescribe a complete task configuration. - Test the real startup path. Reboot the actual machine and observe whether the intended Windows session, OBS profile, scenes, and sources initialize. Confirm OBS is sending output and independently check what YouTube shows to viewers.
- Test your recovery plan. Decide how you will detect a stalled or disconnected stream and what should happen next. Test that behavior on the target machine rather than assuming that a launch argument, scheduled task, or wrapper will restart OBS or restore a public broadcast.
Configure the YouTube connection without hard-coding assumptions
Use OBS’s current YouTube service selection and the stream setup shown for your channel. The OBS Project’s maintained RTMP service configuration lists “YouTube – RTMPS,” a primary endpoint of rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2, and a backup endpoint of rtmps://b.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2?backup=1. Because this maintained configuration can change, confirm the current values in your installed OBS version instead of treating endpoints as permanent.
The same OBS service metadata lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 as supported codecs, a 2-second keyframe interval, a maximum video bitrate of 51,000 kbps, and a maximum audio bitrate of 160 kbps. These are service configuration limits or recommendations, not instructions to use the maximum for every encoder, connection, resolution, or channel. Choose settings appropriate to your encoder and available upload bandwidth; do not mistake a maximum for a target bitrate.

Keep the stream key private. Do not expose it in screenshots, logs, task arguments, or any other material that may be shared. If you suspect it has been exposed, replace it using the controls in YouTube’s current live-stream setup and update OBS.
Starting OBS does not guarantee a viewer-facing live broadcast
--startstreaming tells OBS to start streaming. It does not establish that the YouTube broadcast is scheduled correctly, public, or visible to viewers, nor does it verify that YouTube continues receiving the stream. Check OBS’s output and the viewer-facing status in YouTube’s current Live Control Room after startup.

An older OBS Project forum guide, How to stream to YouTube with OBS Studio (created July 26, 2015), describes the distinction between broadcast controls and sending from OBS. Its interface details may be dated, so use YouTube’s current controls rather than following old click-by-click directions.
Check the parts of “always on” that automation cannot settle
There is no single launch setting that establishes reliable continuous operation across every Windows machine and YouTube channel. Validate the full path on your own setup:

- Sign-in and session: Does OBS open in the intended user session after restart, and does it behave as expected if Windows is locked or the user signs out?
- Sources and devices: Do capture sources, audio devices, and any GPU-dependent inputs remain available after reboot and under the session state you plan to use?
- Power and network: Does the PC remain powered and connected, and what happens after a power loss or internet interruption?
- Failure detection and recovery: How will you notice that OBS has crashed, stopped sending, or failed to restore output? Which recovery action have you actually tested?
- YouTube status: After startup or a disconnection, is the broadcast still in the intended state and visible to viewers?
These are deployment checks, not outcomes guaranteed by OBS’s launch documentation. The inspected official materials do not provide an end-to-end current recipe for restart-on-failure, sign-in behavior, GPU capture in a locked session, power-loss recovery, or YouTube’s handling of very long streams. Do not assume continuous uptime or automatic broadcast recovery without testing your chosen arrangement.

YouTube’s Stream HDR video on YouTube guidance describes a specific RTMPS HDR workflow that requires OBS 30.1 or later, compatible HDR input, and appropriate hardware HEVC settings. That version requirement applies to the documented HDR workflow, not to ordinary SDR streaming. Do not apply HDR encoder instructions to a standard SDR stream.
